My husband and I were raised to eat what was offered or don’t eat for that meal. It wasn’t enforced cruelly just a gentle “this is what we are having” thing. Our siblings and both of us eat whatever and don’t have too many strong dislikes. The way we do this with our toddler is offer the meal and if it is denied then they have to wait till snack time to eat next. He’s caught on really fast and knows that if I don’t eat I’m just gonna be hungry for a bit and that’s not fun so he eats anything that’s offered. If he doesn’t like it he doesn’t eat much but he at least tries and eats a portion of anything we offer. I hope this helps if anyone is struggling. I think the main key is to stay calm around meals and not make it a big deal how much is eaten or not. I had to pray a lot with my first because it made me so anxious at first but I learned to trust that God has given him a healthy body that knows what to eat and when. Praying through the trouble shooting and hard times around this and all other aspects is so helpful. Your God loves you and will provide🤗““Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:25-26‬ ‭CSB‬‬

I love this philosophy!! My niece is a super picky eater and barely eats any protein and that stresses me out. I’m about to have my first baby and really don’t want him to be picky. I love the idea of just saying “this is what we’re eating” ❤

My parents also raised me like this. My sister wasn't. She is super picky. I just eat whatever. It definitely had an impact.
My husband was raised on his whims so when we started dating I had to make him less picky. He learned to eat some foods at 21 lol

I read once (German book called "Kinder verstehen" - Renz Polster) that selective eaters do not suffer from malnutrition and are less likely to be become overweight. I myself am not a gourmet, I rather stick to the same ingriedients over and over. So far, I am happy and healthy, thats why I didnt stress out about my sons food. The only stressors were occasional comments from others.

Literally me! I only eat food that truly tastes delicious. I won't eat something "just to eat". That's why I love cooking, because I make what I love and I season everything the way I prefer it 😅 I steer clear from fast food because it's always bland, too salty, and never hot enough 😅

Omg! Thank you for sharing this. I thought I was the only one who took it personally when our daughter wouldn’t eat the food that I took the time to prepare lol. I can totally relate to the “clean your plate” upbringing. This is a great reminder for me to relax and to let our daughter get messy!

Great advice! I also saw in that Netflix documentary on babies that what you eat while pregnant and breastfeeding can also have an impact on your babies food preferences. I'm not sure how much it affects it, but it's a pretty interesting concept.

    • @snsmystic

it's 100% true. In the same way the mom's mental health affects the disposition of the child. That said, my brother is expecting their first next month and his wife has, even before pregnancy, only likes fried food and highly processed food and a ton of sugary food. Her attitude is to eat things that are "tasty" i.e. her standard, rather than eat healthy things that are also palatable. Hence her obesity even before the pregnancy. It terrifies me how the baby's food preferences and health down the road will turn out.

Thank you so much for this 🥹 my daughter is 8.5 months old & I’ve struggled SO MUCH with just relaxing about the mess 😅 it’s been one of the reasons I’ve struggled to just give her solids (her hatred of being cleaned up doesn’t help, lol). This video is very encouraging for me to just give her the food, cause she definitely wants it ❤

My baby hates being cleaned too, honestly I recommend singing a special cleaning song while you do and it helps sometimes. It sounds silly, but I made one up one time super sleep deprived trying to get her to calm down when I was cleaning her up and she stopped crying almost right away. It hasn’t been a problem since! Good luck to you if she continues to be fussy though, you got this mama!

Love your videos and how relatable they are. My anxiety about choking/allergies made me start with purées but we were able to transition to solids after a month and my son LOVES to eat and feed himself. I do feel like it depends on babies’ personalities too regardless of all the things we try to implement

I’ve heard that variety in texture also works if you don’t have the means (financially, mentally or otherwise) to provide variety in types of food. Example would be if you make pasta sauce or Mac n cheese, serve it with different types of noodles, spirals or penne or another type. So think of variety in terms of foods AND textures.
Lastly, I feel like we have to do what we can and remember that our babies grow in to adults who can make their own food choices and likely won’t stay picky. I used to be a very picky eater and now as an adult I eat a wider variety of foods and generally will try new foods. Not to say to ignore any of these tips, but remember that we don’t need to stress out SO MUCH 💕💕💕

I did BLW with my first and she will eat almost anything. She's 2 1/2 now and we made a pea soup this week and that was first thing in a long time she tasted but didn't actually eat. But can't blame her, lol! I can't remember the last time she didn't want to eat something other than being full. Totally agree how helpful letting them get messy is! #2 is due in Dec and definitely going to do the same with him.

Rebecca Wilson’s ‘What Mummy Makes’ is a fantastic recipe book. I’m glad you mentioned her in your description. I find that making one meal for my 6mo and myself and sitting down with him and eating in front of him creates a relaxed mealtime. I help offer him different foods that he still has trouble picking up but he’s able to choose what he wants to eat. I still do purées as well. Sometimes he wants to shovel food down his mouth, understandably.

I went thru the exact same thing with my one year old! He's soups picky and an additional thing I would've done was to let him get a taste of food here and there a little sooner. I'd def ask a pediatrician first but I just feel like it would've helped for him to get used to it a little more

As a nurse and having discussions on this topic I really feel that some kids persona has a lot to do with this picky/ selective eating at the end of the day. I feel there are things you can do to decrease this but for the most part most children will go through this phase. I myself was a breastfed baby and I’ll tell you the only thing I wanted was breastmilk till the age of 4. I can’t imagine my moms stress. She really did try everything! It just took me growing up to appreciate food. 😖

I started baby led weaning after puréed foods. She has a mix of both but mostly it’s BLW. She eats EVERYTHING so I don’t think starting with puréed foods will affect anything but every baby is different so maybe in other babies cases that could be true.

  • @TheBalancedMom

I can definitely relate to that! 5 kiddos later and I still don't like the mess that comes with eating---- I'm totally fine with messy food when it's time to play with that food (like playing with jello or the inside of pumpkin seeds-- things they don't eat but just play with) but nah, not when it's meal time. I mean they get a little messy as they learn to use a spoon and eat finger foods but not mushing it and getting it in their hair and such. We're all different and it's totally ok to skip the crazy messes at each meal!! All the kiddos went through the picky eating phase but they are out of it and eat everything-- it's crucial to be a family that always tries new foods. When they saw us doing that over and over again, they started to get excited about our taste tests!

Love this. I have a 3 year old boy and about a couple weeks before I started weening him a friend with a baby who was a month older mentioned they were doing blw. I hadn't a clue what they were talking about. I looked it up and decided it seemed a good idea. So last minute I decided to do it. I had no kind of plan and it was a bit half-hearted/difficult/badly done. I now have a picky 3 year old who eats one vegetable (broccoli) and one fruit (banana) and even those he can sometimes refuse. He pretty much only wants to eat bread lol. Lots of other things get refused. I now have a 4 month old, Jasmine, and I'm determined to do things better this time! Your experience seems similar to mine. I'm inspired by your videos and definitely going to follow to see how your journey goes with Arya ❤

I have 3 boys and my oldest has always been a picky eater. When I only had him I thought it was my mistake that he didn‘t try different foods. He found soft foods disgusting and didn‘t want to touch them. So I only fed him purrees. I always thought that I ‚made’ my child to behave that way- until I had my second child. He ate everything right away, no fussing, just a curious little guy who wanted to experience all different flavours. NOW I KNOW that picky eaters are born this way and it‘s not your fault! Don‘t doubt yourself and be too harsh Momma!
    Best wishes from Austria, Europe

I have a 9 month and I'm struggling with several of these "regret" you have! I wanted to try BLW but was too scared of them choking to this day I still have him on purees with some texture. They do not have any teeth (just starting to see white on the bottom of the gum). Would you be able to do a video on how you prep the BLW foods and the texture/softness/size they need to be? My biggest concern is the texture of them so they are able to break it down enough to avoid choking.

I tried with eggs a couple times at the beginning but honestly gave up because he always refused due to the texture , recently he told me he wanted to eat eggs 😅 and he did , I was so happy and shocked because I didn’t know where it came from. How I have a 5 month old and will definitely do things differently and get that app you mentioned because with my first I had no plan and was super stressed during meal time and a helicopter mom because I was scared of him chocking on almost everything .

My son is 6.5m and I've been procrastinating starting solids because I don't feel ready or know how to, plus there's so many differing opinions that I've heard (purees vs. BLW). But hearing that BLW should help a baby be less picky is encouraging. I have a book on BLW, which I've just started reading now thanks to you. Anyway, thank you for sharing... I'm feeling a bit more confident to dive in to solids and see what happens!

For all eggs lovers out there like myself, I make French roast for my child. I noticed she loves it so I started making it without adding the bread. She’ll eat the cooked eggs batter like that. My French toast batter is eggs, some milk, vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and cinnamon and cook in pan like omelette. I sprinkle maple syrup on top to sweeten, not much, just a spoon over.

That’s so interesting your point about consuming less milk after 9 months old. This is why I’m not so into various phrases people use regarding various baby things, like, ‘food before one is just for fun’. That doesn’t account for the fact that they should be getting exposed to many foods! I suppose it does kind of imply you shouldn’t stress too much about it, but there’s so many important things to understand regarding food and babies, FTMs should educate themselves a bit about it so they have an idea of what to expect and do!
My baby is 9 months old, and we’ve been doing BLW since 6 months old. I try not to stress too much about what she eats, but she has fussy periods when she eats, then she will eat anything. So I do ask her if she wants more during parts of meals, try to offer a favorite food again, etc. I hope I’m not pushing too much, but I know she’s probably not done yet, and if I do nothing, she will just sit there.

Yeah i do think that phrase is more to keep us moms from stressing out LOL but seems every babe is different and we just cant expect them all to eat the same as eachother, or it even varies from meal to meal like your babe!

I was almost going to DM you on Instagram to ask how BLW went with Aria. I have 2 kiddos - almost 4 year old son and 6 months old daughter. My son has special needs and his gross motor milestones were delayed - which impacted his ability to sit upright while eating. Hence, I couldn't do BLW with him..and he got sick with pneumonia when he was 10 months old...and that gave him a scare of his lifetime due to lots of vomiting, antibiotics, etc. Eventually he became extremely picky with his eating, food textures, and comfortable with the same few foods. It's SO stressful.. he's gotten better, but now takes forever to complete a meal. Having learnt this the hard way, I started BLW with my daughter few weeks ago with complete confidence. I did my research and know what to do. She loves eating so far.... I'm learning to embrace the mess. She smears the food with her chubby fingers and manages to get a decent amount of food into her tummy. I have learnt that cleaning up after a messy mealtime isess stressful than dealing with picky eating. Thank you for this video!

I’m going to be honest. It was my BIGGEST mistake to puree my baby food. This is my first baby and I was too scared to start BLW. I think for trying first food to see if they like the taste is puree a good option, but I heavily recommend people to try BLW as soon as possible and between months 6-8 of you are still scared to try. It’s a lot easier to prepare food and they will handle their own food intake. With the puree I just didn’t feel it was enough, but I deff underestimate how full they can already be after a few bites. I also believe that BLW makes them more confident in their food and hand-eye coordination. They are exploring too. My baby hated to be spoon fed and when I tried the methode to let her handle it on her own she would complain if I put food on her spoon. I noticed that my baby just eat a lot more and I can see when she is also full with the way she acts. So that is my advice, but don’t blame yourself for not trying and a little gagging is not bad! Just do your research and you will find the right size and portions to serve!

I make soups for my little one 😂 I do all kinds of squash soups, coconut and lemongrass, chicken noodle. She loves things with rosemary and thyme in it. So wild to watch. I just don’t feel comfortable with baby led weaning. She can get to solids at some point, but it’s just not right for us.

Is it too late to change? My baby is nearly 8 months and really didn’t take to baby led weaning so we kind of switched to purées. Every time she gets something “solid” in her mouth (like I give her a piece of steamed vegetable she can mash in her mouth, she gags to the point she vomits. And I don’t mean like spit up, like FULL ON barfs. It’s very very stressful and I feel guilty like I’m doing this all wrong. But so far she is doing well on puree but I’m definitely not exposing her to many different foods. Ahhh the Mum guilt

I did blw with both my older kids and they ate everything for a couple years. Now at 9 & 7 they are so picky about what they want. They only eat the same 5 foods. Have been this way for years. My oldest has gotten better about trying new foods and I let him do it in his own in his time. So I personally do not think blw will keep kids from not being picky as they grow. I do think blw was amazing for being inuitive eaters. Both kids will eat until full even if that means walking away from half eaten desserts. With my 3d I’ve decided to do combo feeding I didn’t really let my kids get messy the first 2 go rounds so I’m letting this one make as big if a mess as he wants.

My second baby did BLW too and was a great eater, once she was around 2 she got extremely picky. She’s 6 and still very fussy. So strange because my first I did purées and she’s an amazing eater and always has been. Just goes to show it doesn’t really matter which way you go each child is completely different.

I did all of this with my son as well, he’s now 3 and he’s the pickiest ever😭 he will not try new food and sometimes he doesn’t eat anything because he doesn’t want nothing that’s being offer, sometimes he just wants McDonald’s and I feel bad not getting him any because he won’t any homemade food, so is either McDonald’s or no food 😕
If baby #2 ever comes I’m definitely going to try and do more research on this as well

as a baby my mom gave me eggs and i would eat them but I didnt like love them but she still gave them too me. Around age 7 it was a struggle to get me to eat eggs but i would have to sit at the table until i finished them otherwise i wasnt allowed to get up from the table . One time i ate them and a few min after i felt the urge to throw up , not even on purpose i just felt nauseous. I grew up being forced to eat them until i became a teenager they finally stopped forcing me. I still to this day dislike eggs and dont eat them. I just dont like the smell of them and the texture. My 18 month old daughter though will eat them fine. I think sometimes it also just has to do with the child just really not liking it, its not always due to not being exposed to it

😂 yip… hugs… for us vegans is easy - fruits & veggies blended or raw if soft enough & you just slice & put in front of the kid 😊 - their choice to eat or not… give them 1 hour to eat & play with food … and then pack it up … lucky we don’t cook much or complicate things

I have also heard that bf babies tend to be less picky because the breast milk has more flavor variety to it- i dont know if you breastfed one child longer than the other - no shame either way, we all do what wworks for us😊

Lol, I literally just boiled butterfly pasta, tossed some jarred tomato sauce and slapped it on her baby seat tray, let her play with it. Next day some boiled broccoli, next day some boiled carrots. She would gag and play with it. After a week she got it down and was enjoying herself. No fuz, no pretentious 2022 instagram bs fads. Just smush it, whatever it is, don't care, just explore.

Just started the video and want to say you can do purées at first and transition to BLW without automatic backfire 😂🤎 I did that with my 3 year old and she’s a great eater!
But I also only spoon fed her when she cued she wanted it, never forced and also when we started solids I never stressed it. She either ate or didn’t but I felt good that I offered full balanced options.
They have to listen to their bodies. Some days she wants seconds and thirds of rice or meat, some days she barely wants it. It evens out. You got it mamas!!
