Reading Kirbys Fourth World adds good historical context and creates a lot of “ah ha” moments in reading Final Crisis. It’s not necessary but adds a whole ‘nother layer.
Ive been thinking it might, once I have the fourth world omnibus or if theres trades, trades I'll read them and read final crisis again
I got that omnibus for Christmas and I will pick up Final Crisis at some point in the near future. Thanks for the heads up.
This video is great timing. I started reading my Final Crisis omnibus yesterday. I’m amazed at how fast I’m ploughing thru it. I’m about half way now. A few things I’ve noticed while reading: it is massive. Really big/heavy etc. But it has an amazing spine. Little to no gutter loss. It stays open so you don’t have to fight with it hold your page. This is an enormous benefit with an omnibus this size. I was reading Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol omnibus last month and they are about a similar size, but Doom Patrol was much more difficult to get comfortable with. While just sitting and reading I felt I had to regularly adjust my positioning and the book to get comfortable. There is none of that with Final Crisis. It is really a well designed book. The paper is good, the gutter loss is minimal, the spine is great. I give it highest marks.
Doug Mankhe is Dc’s MVP for years! The go to guy when you need it NOW and it will look awesome and he delivers everytime!!
Oh yeah, I was one of those who read TPB of Final Crisis basically without any prior knowledge of what has happened and who is who in DC universe of that time. Was trying to get into the world of comics and this book was featured in many "must read/best comic books" lists of that time. And yeah, I've discovered that re-reading this really helps and it gets better with each time ( well, mostly helps the fact that in between these re-reads I have enriched my DC knowledge ). Hopefully one day I'll be able to say that it's one of my favourite ones.
Haven't read Final Crisis since it came out in single issues. I think I need to do a big DC re-read. I really loved that DC period from around 1998 to about 2012 or so. Infinite Crisis, 52. Countdown. Final Crisis. (I have been reading DC off and on since the 60s)

Definitely would love to have this book in my collection, but definitely do take on board how complex it is. Would love to see you do a "road to Final Crisis" type of video doing a reading order to lead up to it (like the Grant Morrison Batman run and other readings)
I think a Road would be an awesome addition as an omnibus.
You mean countdown to final crisis? That was totally disregarded by Morrison, but somehow I find it still interesting and hope DC would some day publish it as an omnibus.

I have the TPB of just the main story and I have the TPB of Final Crisis, but I want to get this monster. The closest omni I have in comparison is the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Great video as always my friend.
This piece takes a lot of heat but it is hands down my favorite main continuity story.
It happened to be the first DC book I read and aside from not being familiar with many characters I never found it confusing.

Great retroview! I got a lot of the story the first time I read it, but the Rikdad Final Crisis blog really really helped me gain a new appreciation for the story and contextualized the Mandrakk stuff.
Great vid Omar!! Huge book tons of content and I can guarantee there will be a good percentage of people who read and still don’t have a bloody clue what was going on or what did go on.lol. And I’m a HUGE DC fan . I read the Dc who’s who when I was a kid I can’t even imagine a person who isn’t familiar with the majority of the characters . You’d have no bloody clue!! Loved Geoff Johns and skot kolins Rogues mini tho. Everything you said you read my mind!!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many minis for this event and the majority had nothing to do with Jack shit. Did they include the 3D glasses with it cuz the Superman mini was in 3 or 4D or sumthin? There was also that mini salvation run where the villains were transported to a planet like secret wars lol it was drawn by Sean Chen and Mathew Sturges I think.

Thanks, great video. I have the Absolute and thought i could avoid buying this omni but from what you’ve said the Absolute is as useful as a chocolate teapot if you don’t have the tie ins and mini series to explain all the context.
One thing i’d love for you to do is a start to finish DC reading order, not every single little graphic novel, but all the omnis (and any ultra key trades or deluxe HCs) from the very first crisis event up to date.
I was thinking about doing events in chronological order.
Hey I have the Crisis on Infinite Earths & Identity Crisis Hardcovers, Infinite Crisis Omnibus, the 52 Omnibus and the Final Crisis Omnibus.
Is the Grant Morrison Batman run necessary for Final Crisis Omnibus ? Ik there are some GM Batman issues in it but will I feel like something is missing in the story without having read all of the batman issues prior Final Crisis omnibus ?
I would just require Fourth World and Seven Soldiers of Victory along with those you mentioned.
Never really read DC back in the day but for some reason The Final Crisis OHC was one of the first DC collections I remember getting. Yeah I'm that guy lol, loved it but had absolutely no idea what was going on 😂

So I purchased the fourth world vol 1-2, infinite crisis, Morrison Batman 1-3, final crisis. Am I good at understanding the story?, I want me a good Superman/JL/Darkseid story. And should I read infinite crisis before Morrison Batman?

Hey OMAR. The new printing of the Final Crisis omnibus that was released a few months ago has Sewn biding with an eye. Its very similar to the Blackest Night Omni Binding with similar eye..... Much less gutter loss. Something to consider.

Great overview Omar and yeah I echo your exact feelings on this story. Perhaps someday I’ll get around to reading all the other supporting material like you mentioned to better appreciate this book.
Retro Review Suggestion: Come on this is a no-brainer it has to be New Warriors Omni Vol 1! Not only do we get more commentary from you on how great this series was, but also give some visibility to the upcoming re-print with the hope that more attention to NW will spur Marvel to print a NW Omni Vol 2! :D

For DC? A great starting point would be books like Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus or Scott Snyder Batman Omnibus. Not this book. Wait a while for this.

I had only read batman grant Morrison run up to RIP and then read this in my initial days,and my mind was blown and not in a good way,suffice to say on revisiting it later it is superb
Terror titans is an amazing and the most underrated story arc ever I learned it from this omnibus
Oh don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it so much I put it on my custom TT omnis, which is where I think it fits better.

i read it and then sold it,i like the main story but most of the tie-ins was hard to get through,had the same thing with blackest knight omni,good main story tie-ins were a drag for the most part

Yeah, some of it is lovely but not related to the main story at all. Like you, I'd love a deluxe edition with just the DC Universe 0 prologue pages, Final Crisis 1-7, Final Crisis: Submit, Superman Beyond 1-2 and Batman 682-683. Maaaaaaaaaaaaybe they could throw in Requiem, Justice League of America 21 and Secret Files in it too, but nothing more. The Revelations and Resist story is nice but it's a separate story that deserves its own book!
man these omnibus I thought they were easy to read and understand but I gave up they looks cool on my shelf but every time I try to read one of them I'm more confused ahahha
Lovely review. As for the book itself, does anyone else feel like there's some stuff that just shouldn't be in it? I love Grant Morrison's Batman, but Batman R.I.P. doesn't belong here in my opinion, neither does Rogue's Revenge, or Terror Titans. Love the main story and Revelations, though.

I got the Final Crisis Absolute Edition. It has all the Grant Morrison stories, which includes the Batman lead-ins, the Superman Beyond interlude, and the Black Lightning one-shot. To me, all the other stories are essentially unnecessary to understanding Final Crisis itself.
Whats the ruler trick? My final crisis doesn't make the eye and has me a little weird
Sticking a thin ruler in the spine. I don't recommend it because you can break the spine, but its last resort something I do.

Just started collecting and got this and seven soldiers
Seven Soldiers is wonderful.
This starts out so well, with intrigue and a cool atmosphere and then becomes so sloppy with nonsensical exposition thrown out to cover plot holes and undercooked ideas and undeveloped characterizations by the end...which is the problem I've found with most of Grant Morrison's larger stories. I actually think the JLA issue at the beginning has some of the strongest writing in the whole book, it makes me wish Dwayne McDuffie (RIP) had written an event book or at least oversaw one, since he actually cares about coherent storytelling and continuity. It's a shame JG Jones didn't do the whole main event, but the fill-in artists were great as well.
Why do you recommend batman by Morrison if it happens after??
Batman Morrison happens before, during and after this event. I would at the very least read the first Omnibus.
I just ordered the trade paperback after Zack Snyder's cryptic Vero post. The omnibus is too big and expensive for me.

LOL oh my god, there is so much glue on that binding, I had to check online if I got a faulty copy or not, that is a ridiculous amount of glue but I guess every youtube video I find of this looks the exact same way, oh well, I guess I have to deal with it.
For anyone reading this, I finally got around to reading this and have to say I have no idea what magic they used for this, but after I stretched my copy it might be the easiest omnibus to read LOL, It opens from the first page without trying to slowly close back up, meanwhile I’ve read morissons first Batman omnibus THREE TIMES and it still tries to shut on me at the start.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention, the eye on mine is WAAAAYYYYY bigger

Go to the Deluxe Edition TH-cam channel video of Final Crisis and have a look at the description box and he has written down a breakdown of the issues from beginning to end. It is pretty much an index without page number. But is does has issue numbers which is very helpful. I’ll post it below.

So many I would suggest. Crisis, Fourth World, Batman from Red Hood forward, Flash after Infinite Crisis, Infinite Crisis, Superman by Geoff johns and so much more.

That was part of my pre-Final Crisis reading. I also read Death of the New Gods. It was a good story and I believe it added to the overall story, unlike Countdown. That series was horrible and even Grant Morrison has stated to not even read it.

Final crisis doesn’t need an omnibus, it’s because the omni it’s full of tie ins without sense that doesn’t help to understand the main story, only the issues that Morrison’s wrote are necessary to understand the whole plot of final crisis.
Most events are exactly like this. But it does help those of us who enjoy everything and can judge for ourselves which is a good title and which Isn’t. Let’s face it without FC label we wouldn’t have had the Crime Bible or Meltzer get to wrap up his Justice league run and those cool Superman 3D books that were a big part of FC.
