      When our small model making shop lost our lease and moved into a shared workshop, the lessee of that facility advised us that, although she had a large lunchroom, we had to pour any extra coffee, water, etc. out in the washroom in the hall. Her double sink was completely blocked, and if we ran water into it, we'd be bailing it out by hand. Some PROFESSIONAL PLUMBER had quoted her $$$ to rip up yards of pipe as the problem was complete block 30 feet away, blah, blah, blah.
      I don't know why I doubted that (with no qualifications in plumbing at all) but found a force plunger in the janitor's closet and borrowed it. I quietly ran a few inches of water into one sink and seconded another woman working there to put all of her (considerable) weight on a wad of wet paper towel stuffed in the other sink's drain. Pump. Pump. Pump >CLUNK< clunkle - the noise came from under somewhere far down on the first floor, and the water poured out of the sink.
      Our new sub-landlord was delighted at the news, convinced I was some sort of plumbing genius among my other talents. It made for a good start.

    My mom found a way to blame everyone else for her mistakes. Her toilet was full and it was up to me to empty it, snake it and finally pull the whole thing off. She had flushed a thick wash cloth. If she had called plumbers she would have A) blamed the plumbers who also stole her silverware, B) blamed the "immigrants" next door for breaking in and not stealing a thing except for having fun with her toilet or C) it was the KGB planting a listening device in her toilet. This is how I grew up.😓

    I know of a blocked drain not unlike that one.
    Imagine two blocks of 12 units on the same property.
    One considerably down hill from the other with a blocked sewer between the two buildings. The plumber cleaned the blockage and with a huge whoosh the water and solid matter went down the hill. Problem solved !
    A month later people from a ground ground floor in the lower building returned from holidays. The bathroom has shit stuck to the ceiling and the rest of the unit had a tide mark the walls. I don’t know how the other people in the building didn’t say anything. I guess that’s why you have surge protection. Builder must have thought nah we will be long gone by them.
    Nothing at all in the unit survived. It was stripped back to concrete on every surface.

    That drain was pure quality. The explosion was a thing of sewage beauty! Question, Bruce. The elbow of the drain you said it was too high. Also the elbow seems odd. Is that up to code? Would the owner need to re-route the drain line?

    • @Nalothisal
      @Nalothisal ปีที่แล้ว +4

      More than likely yes. I can only speak for Americans here, but typically sewer lines are suppose to be buried quite a ways deep. Mine Is about three feet under ground if I had to guess but its probably more like six feet. Also that elbow being that sharp, in my uneducated opinion, for a sewage line is just straight up asking for trouble. A more gradual turn using two 45° bends would probably work better.

    • @jovetj
      @jovetj 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Nalothisal Most Aussie lines don't seem to need buried far because there's no risk of freezing. One foot seems pretty typical in the videos here I've been watching for two days.
      That elbow is less than 90° which is why it probably seems odd to some. As long as the line is generally moving downhill, though, it should be fine.

    I have been watching for about 18 months, as I spent 30+ years in property maintenance I have meter a number of people like you ‘Living the dream’. Due to some of my time being spent as a supervisor / Forman I leant a bit about most trades and find some of your actions a bit puzzling. In that, I was taught to keep the mess to a minim if possible and look for ways to do the work without making a mess if possible. That said I enjoy watching you and wish you the best @Living the Dream@.👍👍👍👍👍⛏⛏⛏⛏

    I subscribed almost a year ago, and always eagerly await your videos. This one was filled with many delights, beginning with those crunchy looking cockroaches enjoying that smelly water inside that backed up drain. (In the '70's, I used to work in a bakery in the mixing room. I would pull dead cockroaches out of the rising sponges (the sponge was flour, yeast, shortening and other stuff). When I informed Management about the problem, I got yelled at, and told to just let them go along with the risen sponge into the second mixing (sugar, salt. more flour & water, and other stuff), and become part of the finished dough. ) The EXPLOSION from that elbow was a HUGE thrill to watch (and I think that drain felt a joyous relief to be rid of all those wipes & poopies). Then the sound of the water draining down that shaft was music to my ears. I can thoroughly understand why you love the job that you. Thanks for having us along.
