2014 Ford Edge SE FWD: Too many crossovers!? Full review and test drive

  • The crossover market is by all intents and purposes...flooded. Ford by itself has a veritable smorgasbord of offerings in the crossover/suv market. So where does this Ford Edge fit in? Is it redundant?
Check out my amateur car review to find out.
As always, I offer an unscripted, independent, unbiased review for the everyday consumer. I look at power train options, fuel economy, space and function and value.

I got my 2012 Edge Limited with every possible option a little over a year ago for 12,500 with 86,000 miles. I love this car and it is so nice having all the extra stuff that came on it. My wife fell in love with it and bought a 2013 limited awd at least in a different color. We are both really happy with these cars. Super comfortable and enjoyable to drive and the V6 makes great power.

Call it amateur or whatnot, I think it's one of the best reviews I have ever seen on a vehicle. It would be even better if you could cover the differences with higher-end trims a bit more.

    1) that cargo net in back i use to put take out food boxes, specially for chinese food.it keeps the box straights and no spills.
    2) that space behind the climate control panel i use to keep paper napkin rectangle box.it fits perfectly and i just need to pull out the tissue,no need to touch the box.
i leased 2013 edge limited ecoboost.but ll buy it as lease ll be over.as i love dis car,its too good with no issues at all

Just paid $30 on Amazon for a cargo net, and believe me, it's so worth the money to put all your groceries in and not have them flying everywhere! Cargo nets, don't leave home without one...

    enjoyed the review.
Ford is offering a pretty nice rebate on the remaining 2014 Edges as they make way for the updated 2015 model. The upgraded Edge SEL with a lot of options is a fairly luxurious automobile as you can get it with leather interior, heated seats, heated steering wheel and the My Ford Touch dash and infotainment options which would make for a very interesting review. Some people say the My Ford Touch feature is too complex, but I find it quite impressive and not as confusing as the reviews would make it seem. Anyway, enjoyed the review and others you have done.

    Good video man!
I just bought a 2014 edge limited AWD last month.
Why?...more reliable than Jeep (transmission wise). Can go off road while maintaining a sleek luxury feel inside all while still being practical. A sedan doesn't even come close to what the edge is...at least with the AWD model.

One thought on the v6 vs ecoboost. You mentioned you have to run premium fuel on the ecoboost. To me the two miles better per gallon would be a wash when you factor in the price difference of premium for the ecoboost vs 87octane for the v6

I'd say there's growing competition: Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Subaru Outback, Toyota Venza, even the Dodge Journey and Kia Sorento.

    • @gcavy1
      @gcavy1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Kamaka Chang Good thinking on the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, I had forgotten that they divided the Santa Fe into two different models now. The Venza is another good call, although I'm not sure I'd call it a direct competitor. The others, while they may be cross shopped, I would say offer the same combination of characteristics (good and bad) as the Edge. Personally, I think the Outbacks are great, and would likely consider one if I was in the market for a non-3 row people mover.
      thanks for chiming in!

good review - I like how you get base ( or close to base ) models rather than the top of the line like most others ( and who's buying those? ) - but I almost choked on my beer when you said Ford Edge and "Styling" in the same sentence - no matter how nice inside I have to think this thing looks like a brick on wheels...plus Ford's mpg's and the real world live in 2 different places...and I'm just guessing but there will probably be a recall on this in 6 months to a year for something or other...as much as reviewers like the Ford handling it just doesn't foster belief in long term reliability for me.. but I like your approach ( which is why I subscribed a year ago ) to "real world" car reviews...keep up the good work!

If the base model takes regular and the eco boost requires premium fuel then I don't think you will ever recover your cost. In fact I think it will be quite the opposite in that it will cost you more and more. My current vehicle takes premium so I noticed the price difference which is usually 40 to 50 cents per gallon.

The real winners of this vehicle are the back seat passengers. Both my teenage sons are 6 foot+ and their knees don’t touch the seat in front of them. The reclining portion is a great touch when one of them wants to sleep on a longer trip and it’s separated, so each side is independently reclined.

I prefer the 2.0 ecoboost over the 3.5 V6 because it's a little lighter and torquier and can still run on regular. But if you tow or have a full load all the time the V6 is better.

did I see that the spare tire is stored inside of the vehicle? As compared to underneath? I travel gravel roads daily and it is really hard to get the spare tire out from the underside when its caked in there with mud and ice! What size of tires comes with this vehicle? Can you buy an 8 ply tire for it? Im searching for a vehicle that will stand up to gravel roads! thanks!

you should mention that the prices have dropped tremendously because everyone wants the 15 edge yet who wants a SUV without a backup camera? granted you can install one but how would that look? This vehicle now is going for 23k when it was 29k so that 6k drop thanks 15 edge for making everyone want one and Ford having a hard time selling the 14's

The 2.0 liter turbo found in the Evoque is essentially the same 2.0L Ecoboost found in many of Ford's products like the Edge and the Explorer albeit with 20 ft-lbs less torque (for smoothness?). When the Evoque first came out I remember there was a good deal of talk about it but since Ford and Land Rover have parted ways. After that it sort of became a little hush-hush because Jaguar-Land Rover wanted carve out its own identity and be able to proclaim itself as a self sufficient independent company. JLR wins for having the powerplant for their most efficient SUV to date and Ford wins because they keep JLR as a production client.
      I hope that helps!
