  • Basics of go kart steering for homemade go karts, including DIY Ackermann and anti Ackermann steering geometry model as well as caster camber and toe on off road and track race go karts!
    This covers go kart parts from the wheel, hub, kingpin, spindle, heim joint, tie rod, pitman, steering shaft, to go kart steering wheel. We will cover basics of a simple adjustment for steering model on a backyard go kart that doesn't have much to adjust and glance over the ackerman steering mechanism and Ackermann angle.
    If you're just setting up a homemade go kart or kart steering steering kit you'll see a little on principle geometry and changes to pitman and the effect on your steering system parts.
    Toe changes can make little adjustments go fast, and can be seen to help slower karts that are setup with anti Ackermann steering layout, or reverse ackerman steering.
    These are basics into diy go kart steering, simple go kart steering explained. The video will start out with focus on go kart front steering but than dive a little into caster setup, and rear wheels that do not have a go kart differential. If you need help with homemade go kart steering or shocks on road, on track or off road with suspension parts this can be a quick start to learn the terms to search for the proper setup and geometry mechanisms!

    Seeing your turn radius with the live axle, I got to thinking. What if you ran a sprocket directly off the crank, onto a jackshaft, and out through a pair of centrifugal clutches? Run a chain from each clutch to its appropriate dead axle wheel. Poor man's limited slip?

    Thanks! I'm here trying to figure out how to get proper Ackerman angle out of my manco dingo two-seater. It has reverse Ackerman with a single Post in the pitman arm. I'm going to try adding a two-post pitman arm with offset mounting points to see if it'll help.

    This is a great knowledge. I’m sure not all the mechanics know about this science.
    BTW, I’m starting my frame work for my first ever, live axle go kart tomorrow.
    Not sure about the frame dimensions for my 6’2” height. But by any way I’m gonna try it .... 😅
    Thanks for the supporting video 😀

    I just bought a POS flat track kart, because ebay and beers are a bad idea no matter what anyone says.. anyway the front left wheel lifts when you turn right and the front right wheel lifts when you turn left, it hardly steers at all, 1 Hole pitman. Do i just try adjust it to make it better & back if its worse or is there a method? Appreciate any advice.

    This video perfectly explained my situation. I have an antiAckerman setup with the steering linkage in front and forward facing spindles and i was wondering why my outside wheel turns more than the inside wheel. Why does this setup even exist?

    • @joshuaatkins5197
      @joshuaatkins5197 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have the same kind of setup on my go-kart and my guess is a couple things. First when you turn the scrub slows that cart down and I think that's kind of a safety thing for the kids that are riding it. Second I think that in high-speed turning it scrubs instead of grips so that it won't roll in a turn at higher speeds. This is pure speculation and just what I've observed on my cart and how the cart reacts to that kind of steering. Oh yeah and every time you buy tires by two front sets cuz you're going to go through them quick

    What brand is that first red go kart? I picked one up very similar to it with the same general design and even the white decal on the floor board. Hadn’t been able to find one similar.
    Currently working on a motor swap from the original 5hp Briggs to a 440 fan cooled from a 1985 Polaris ss. Actually had its first test drive today after a 6” frame extension and custom motor mounts for the 440.

    I’ve got a Go-Kart it’s a live axle and I’m still not clear on what I need to do to correct the problems with the steering upfront. I’ll probably re-weld the king pin brackets at an angle after some research and I also work on the toe I have no idea how you adjust camber on these go carts I mean these are metal spindles front, and in the rear it’s a live axle steel axle ..there is no camber adjustment.

    Being unfamilur with these terms i am wondering it i can get the same akermann results with the tie rods being infront of the spindles or is that position the difference between akermann and anti-akermann steering. Somehow no one has ever answered this with enough clarity.

    • @megoingfast

    What about Rack and pinion steering

    • @megoingfast
      @megoingfast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, and honestly I slid in the visuals at 7:26 and avoided covering it "directly" on purpose for this reason: people say so many different things about it "being included in ackermann" without a pitman, it being "sort of ackermann", "sort of davis" because it's slide, etc. Since I saw it as only place where people could tell me I "got it all wrong" I put the dimensional modeling in in case anyone was curious 🤷. Sorry to say. However, the principle for spindle forward and spindle reverse is roughly the same as can see in the two models at that time. To adjust for over steer or under steer you can shorten the spindle arm length or lengthen it, or change gear size on the pinion.

    • @megoingfast
      @megoingfast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really depends what type of kart. Street racer karts rely the most heavily on this and set between 0 and 2. 1-2 is pretty good unless tires are worn. Do you have off road kart or race?

      @@megoingfast no, it's the double C style knuckle. Just curious if I should cut the C off the frame and weld it back on at 2°-6°. I know on my Jeep it's supposed to be at 6°, the go-kart C is right at 0°.

    I got the most super twitchiest steering I've ever experienced. My son and granddaughter didn't realize how quick and twitchy it was and rode straight into trees. Gotta figure something out. Toe was out too.

    • @megoingfast
      @megoingfast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Camber helps stability. Toe helps turning radius. Additionally, it is best to check front pin wear in case replacement is needed. Often the older carts need new front pins, sometimes a little spindle work on the pin hole that wears over time.

    • @megoingfast
      @megoingfast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not too many "new" for steering that hasn't been done. Some people trying out rear differential on go karts with a locking system for limited slip. The peerless 100 series differential I just put out a video on with part numbers. You'd have to create a lock system for each side to adjust for slipping on starts, but turning would be a bit smoother on tight corners.
