I was 14 when this movie came out and I remember so vividly all the enchantment John´s performance brought to audiences. Few Oscars were so deservedly won as his. All those years and it still touches people who watch it.
Mr. Gielgud was so perfect for this role, I can't imagine anyone else playing that part.....a wonderful actor.....thank you so much for putting this video together.
Thank you for this video. They were both unforgettable actors. I miss the old way to make movies from the heart. Thank you Sir Arthur John Gielgud and Mr Dudley Moore for wonderful memories like these. Thanks also Mrs Liza Minnelli, God Bless you all.
What a pleasure to watch. Both actors played their parts perfectly complementing the other. The first scene is so classic. I only saw this in the theater once and it has stayed with me for twenty years!
One of the several great performances in one of the better movies Hollywood ever created. I wore out two VHS copies of this movie before DVD's came along. I saw this movie twice in the theaters when it first came out.
Probably the greatest actor of all times. People ragged on him because the great Shakesperean actor played the role of a butler. They were wrong and he could do it all drama, comedy, plays, movies--you name it.
When he said "Now, I have something for you", I was waiting for the next line to be "Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldnt allow it."
In all honesty I never cared for Arthur the Film, but for me John Gielgud's finest moments when he played Aaron Jastrow in War and Remembrance. You can see clips of it here on TH-cam. Outstanding performance.
Can anybody tell me what the ending of the film is as the Bentley is pulling away from the Church - what's the red thing around the window? It looks like a hand? Is it Liza's foot? Red sneakers?? Anyone?
I love it when Hobson walks into Linda's apartment and say's, how revolting!.......A truly great actor. To give credit to Dudley and Liza they were very good.
A few months ago some of my younger friends were telling me about this new movie out called "Arthur". I can still see the look of shock on their faces when told them about the original "Arthur". Kids....
There is a simple answer to that problem: YOU find someone to love (the world is full of unloved people) and love will come back to you. And if you are able to accept it, God loves you, because God IS love. Very best wishes.
Beautiful performances by Sir John and Dudley Moore. I tell people to skip the horrid remake and seek out the 1981 classic Arthur instead. When will Hollywood learn its lesson and stop ruining great films w/ dreadful remakes? Probably never. Thank you for posting.
My personal favorite is the scene at his fathers office, “no one smiles Hobson how come nobody’s smiling? “Hobson’s response: “ they smile at lunchtime”
Funny how Lines take on different meanings as you get older. Forty years later the line “ you can do whatever you want to do” takes on an entirely different significance
My son who is now 46 was conceived in that same bowling alley! He still lives with me! The woman bugged out quite a few years ago! She got the truck, the trailer and the dog, she left our only son behind though.
Oh man they made a awful mockery out of the first one. The first movie was so perfect in every way a movie can be. Great cast, beautiful light-warm script and the right humor. The way i used to love the comedy back in the day, such finesse. Today comedies are stupid, F brutal, so heavy trashy and loud!!! AWFUL!! I am glad i was born in the 60's and lived the 70's and 80's the best times ever imo.
saw hobson at a production of oliver twist in london in the late 90s, sitting two rows in front of me. I couldn't believe my eyes that I was seeing a living legend. he looked very frail.
Oh, my GOODNESS! How wonderful! Caught him onstage - HE WAS 92 YRS. OLD - IN "The Best of Friends," w/ Roy Dotrice and Rosemary Harris.. He bobbled a few lines, a tiny bit, - but: He was, naturally: SOOO SPLENDID. So grateful I was there. He was a GIANT. Rest in Peace always, graceful, brilliant Sir John. ALL THOSE PERFORMANCES, through 7 decades, at least! A true king.
I was born in 1980, but I can clearly see this movie is a classic and FAR superior to any remake they could possibly vomit out. Dudley Moore, are you kidding me? His acting is extravagant, I mean could we at least have chosen an English actor close to his talent for the remake????
He had some of the best sarcasm and wisdom. My favorite Hobson line actually is thise one: Arthur: I hate it here. Hobson: Of coure you do people work here. Arthur: No one smiles here Hobson, how come no one smiles? Hobson: They smile at lunch time
Fine actor that the late David Niven was, I don't think he would have been able to deliver the kind of performance the late Sir John Gielgud delivered. Mr Niven had nothing like Sir John's emotional range or gravitas. Plus, it's very difficult to carry off that level of pomposity and sarcasm and still come across as a sympathetic character, as Sir John did. Plus, don't forget, Mr Niven would most likely have needed to be dubbed, as he was in the final "Pink Panther" films.
Hobson: Would you remove your helmet, please? Arthur: Why? Hobson: Please. [Arthur hands him his helmet] Hobson: Thank you. Now your goggles. Arthur: Why? Hobson: Please. [Arthur hands him his goggles] Hobson: Thank you. [slaps him across the face repeatedly] Hobson: You spoiled little bastard! You're a man who has everything, haven't you, but that's not enough. You feel unloved, Arthur, welcome to the world. Everyone is unloved. Now stop feeling sorry for yourself. And incidentally, I love you.
Yeah ikr? Russell is not even in that league, is a mouthy, modern type of comedian who is in people face. comedy was really different in those days. Why do make a remake even? All the people in the industry these days, are trying too hard to replicate a era of great cinema and music avant-garde, which had some serious impact on generations. The 60's 70's and 80's were huge fun in every sense, socially and artistically and actors had to work their butt off, one wrong move and it was over.

Sir John Gielgud received and Academy Award for his role as Hobson, and he certainly deserved it.
This guy was a BOSS! The definition of a gentleman. They don't make em' like this anymore.
I was 14 when this movie came out and I remember so vividly all the enchantment John´s performance brought to audiences. Few Oscars were so deservedly won as his. All those years and it still touches people who watch it.
Truly a class act. Rest in peace Sir John

Sir John Gielgud and
Dudley Moore, CBE..
A beautiful man in a beautiful movie. I saw this on HBO when I was a boy, and it gets better with age.
this makes me cry every time I see it, great movie splendid actors.
I love this movie. I wish these guys were alive and young again
Sir John - a formidable gentleman.
What a pleasure to watch. Both actors played their parts perfectly complementing the other. The first scene is so classic. I only saw this in the theater once and it has stayed with me for twenty years!
What an elegant man, Gielgud!
Un Actor Extraordinario.Sir Jhon Gielgud.un abrazo a la Eternidad.
What a classy gentleman.
a wonderful movie that I have enjoy'd many many times
The relationship between Arthur and Hobson is genuinely beautiful.
Sir John Gielgud actor legendary 🎭
Theatre 🎭
One of the several great performances in one of the better movies Hollywood ever created. I wore out two VHS copies of this movie before DVD's came along. I saw this movie twice in the theaters when it first came out.
Gielgud was just perfection in this.
He didn't want to do it either. They finally offered him so much money he had to take it.
20 lines? Wonderful stuff.
People can learn a lot fom from this guy class act
One of the best movies

Happy Birthday to the late, great Sir John Gielgud.
Gielgud stole this movie.
When you can play a great dramatic Hamlet and a great comic butler, that is versatility.
In all honesty I never cared for Arthur the Film, but for me John Gielgud's finest moments when he played Aaron Jastrow in War and Remembrance. You can see clips of it here on TH-cam. Outstanding performance.
That’s why he was so great he sold it
garrison968 his delivery was great my favorite line was his answer to Arthur when he asked why no one was smiling. “They smile at lunchtime” 😆
The two made a great pair. Never watched Liza, but she caught my attention in this film. Great acting by these three
Can anybody tell me what the ending of the film is as the Bentley is pulling away from the Church - what's the red thing around the window? It looks like a hand? Is it Liza's foot? Red sneakers??
Anyone?

The original is light years bettet
"One would have to comb the finer bowling alleys to meet a person of your distinction."
I have never been loved ; I would love to have someone like Hobson to love me
There is a simple answer to that problem: YOU find someone to love (the world is full of unloved people) and love will come back to you. And if you are able to accept it, God loves you, because God IS love. Very best wishes.
Love the Hobson line "Steal something casual"
"and he has seen me..." wisdom
Beautiful performances by Sir John and Dudley Moore. I tell people to skip the horrid remake and seek out the 1981 classic Arthur instead.

Very true
YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT
Yes NEVER my Dad publicized movies including very famous ones like the sound of music. He hated the idea of remake's
Yes NEVER
Let's honor the originals by keeping alive.
When this came out it was wildly funny and charming and heartbreaking...What I wouldn't give for...
They dont make movies like this anymore.
@@Jay-nq7fn That's for sure.
but, where is "I'll alert the media" .....best delivery ever
My personal favorite is the scene at his fathers office, “no one smiles Hobson how come nobody’s smiling? “Hobson’s response: “ they smile at lunchtime”
Unlimited talent
🎂John Gielgud 04-14-2022
Best slap ever.
Haha - probably rattled Dudley's whiskers Lol

I happen to have met my wife in a bowling alley, oh yeah I see what he meant now.
My son who is now 46 was conceived in that same bowling alley! He still lives with me! The woman bugged out quite a few years ago! She got the truck, the trailer and the dog, she left our only son behind though.

WOW!!! How interesting so was he....................in his 90's!
Oh, my GOODNESS! How wonderful! Caught him onstage - HE WAS 92 YRS. OLD - IN "The Best of Friends," w/ Roy Dotrice and Rosemary Harris.. Arthur: I hate it here.
Hobson: Of coure you do people work here.
Arthur: No one smiles here Hobson, how come no one smiles?

Hobbs loved Arthur like his own son
And Arthur loved him.
totally agreed! I didn't watch the remake, but I wouldn't even bother. Bad enough they remade it, they had to use Russell Brand? barf...

why are brits so damn good at acting....
idk? tracy, clift and cruise were no slouches. no, that wasn't a typo. I think the man has some chops. terrible role selections, though.
Theatre ..its pretty much in their blood lol
It's the accent lol
Arthur's real father
That remake is a total insult to the remake business. May I get a second, please.
I agree completely with eference to the dreadful remake .
Is the original available in it's complete form on you-tube ?
Why are far better actors than Americans? Great performance..
@KellyGreen5555 So true. It was perfect the way it was.
Academy Award.....
I'm trying to imagine John Gielgud as the voice over actor for the Star Wars character C-3PO.
,❤
Helen Mirren can't top Sir John Gielgud
Is she a top?...always thought she was a bottom.
Why would you write such a STUPID statement? You are an idiot.
@@jr88291 I agree. What a moron!
No, but you can purchase it on Amazon for a song. Highly recommended.
Hobson: Would you remove your helmet, please?
Arthur: Why?

We all need a butler like Hobson to slap some sense into us

If there was ever an example of a great actor stealing a film, this is it.
Hobson😥

Really sappy music, but good scenes.
