Something great??? This video was GREAT! I love these because I'm a new turner and have been given access to plenty of wood. The challenge is to look at it and figure out how to maximize the amount of blanks you can get out of a piece. I still have a lot to learn and seeing you process is very helpful. When I get wood, I don't get just one or two pieces, I get a chuck of log. Good thing I'm pretty handy with the chainsaw. Thanks Jim!!

    Hi Jim, Another Great video,
I use the One way Coring rig on my Powermatic. I love it, less shavings to clean up and more bowls.
I use a 3/4" steel bar about 18" long with a dimple one end for the live center and a small point and cup on the other end for the blank. I use it as a safety to push the blank in the chuck with the tail stock while coring. This way I can set up for the money bow, then core using the small knife through to the larger supporting each one with the bar.
another trick I use is a squirt bottle of soapy water squirting it in the cut to keep the cutter lubricated.
It helps the cutting and the cutters last longer between sharpening.
Love your work thanks for sharing
    Richard...

I think it looks like a lot of hard work...lol Would love to see a resin piece with some of the shavings of the birch, or any shavings of wood for that matter. You can tell you're a pro. At the first of the video I thought "18 bowl blanks, no way. But here you are with 18 blanks, and all with a natural edges. This video was fun to watch, and I'm not a turner. Learned a lot and that is always a good thing. Learn a little every day and only your body grows old. Again, thanks for the post, it was fun. Would have loved to smell the wood when you were coring the blanks.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍

nice work, in the uk as a forester i never let woodturners near burrs because they waste burls, great demonstration on economic use of materials. The big problem is getting the guy on the chainsaw to understand the different markets he could supply and linking harvest to production of artisan work

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agree, I didn’t cut this burl, I was just handed the pieces so you kind of play the cards your handed. The tree was coming down, so I would of liked to seen the burl cut off above and below it and then given to me that way. The only problem was there was no equipment on site and this burl would of been just to heavy to manhandle, Jim.

You have much more experience than myself but a suggestion on the production end of coring. Once you cut out the blank with the cooring tool you can turn it around and use the larger one as a jam chuck, this allows you to turn a tennon on the cored piece.
Give it a try. Great video!

Nice! I'm a hobby turner, not a production turner so I won't be doing exactly what you are doing but that doesn't mean I don't like seeing what you're doing. I can always pick up a few hints to apply to my own situation so definitely keep them coming.

Good luck with the turning, hope you can sort it out,

I have the same coring system and love it. However like you mentioned the cutters are expensive, and I do not think they last that long although they do make carbide cutters. I do not find them hard to sharpen as you mentioned although that is just me. I run a Stihl 391 with a 25” bar and an aggressive chain. Nice video

I switched to the carbide cutters and the two that I got broke during coring so I switched back to the HSS ones. Don’t really know what the issue was and Oneway replaced them with the HSS so that was good of them to do that. I would like to see the cutters larger so you can get more grinds on them before replacing them. Stihl makes a good saw too!

Hiya Jim, I’ve be thinking for a while about tuning my wood turning hobby into something more productive. After over 30 years of working in IT, the thought of making beautiful objects is very appealing.. Your channel has been an inspiration and a source of such valuable information.. Thanks so much for sharing. Gareth 😊

Excellent stage by stage intro to handling and prepping bowl blanks, Jim. I enjoy your talk through at every stage. So wish we could get the coring tool here in South Africa and at a cost effective price, sadly we have few suppliers and they hold limited stock of even the basics. Take care, stay safe and keep warm that side of the globe.

I noticed Ahron Africanmeat talking about this too, I would send Oneway an email, they might ship to there? It was a warm -29 C last week, lol.

I really liked watching you lay out the rough blanks. I watch a lot of videos but when you have that rough log sitting in front of your chain saw it gets hard to decide where to cut. Great seeing you do it.
