I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm extremely lucky,
'cause I found the original soundtrack vinyl album for only 1 euro 75 cents!!
I went home played it and LOVED it!!
Now I really want a copy of this movie!
Thank you very much for sharing!
Love & respect from a Dutch musiclover!

Hi, I'm the poster, and delighted to hear from you! To this day this film haunts me for it's magnificent score, excellent acting, the unique and updated Orpheus legend, and so much more! BTW, love your screen name! Many years ago I remember a perfume by Jean Patou. It was named "Adieu Sagesse." I don't know if it's still available, but it was beautiful! Thanks so much for writing!
      Best wishes,

I agree!! This is my number 1 all-time favorite movie. I fell in love with this movie when I was about 19 years old. I even signed up to learn Portuguese in college but there weren't enough students signing up so they dropped it from the curriculum. I even wanted to move to Brazil back then!! I have binge watched this for a week now, It is one of the best movies ever made,

It's a truly wonderful movie, Judy. With its abundance of vowel sounds, Portuguese, and particularly Brazilian Portuguese, is a beautiful language for song.

So good to hear from you! This is actually from the soundtrack, so it can't be more authentic than that! A haunting melody, well performed by Agostinho dos Santos! Sadly, he died in 1973 on a Varig flight from Rio to Paris. Apparently there was a fire onboard the aircraft, and it crashed just short of the destination.
      Best regards,

+varadero1839 I heard this song played on violin on a record in 1960 in Khartoum Sudan.
I traveled there with a group of musicians to work in one of the night clubs operating at the time and this song stuck in my mind since then. Then my sister who had migrated to Brazil, sent me the printed music and I was overjoyed. We just played it in a gig last Friday night at a private party. I play the tenor saxophone. Thank you so much for uploading this song appreciate it.

@WorldCitizen667. The film was released in the UK a couple of years or so ago on DVD and I was given it for my birthday. It was £10 in HMV shop. In fact I saw it at the cinema about 55 years ago in London and always wanted to get the music, now I have it. The film was very enjoyable but sad.

I still can't believe Marpessa Dawn (Eurydice), wasn't even Brazilian. How does she speak Portuguese so well!? It's crazy.

    • @roxyiconoclast
      @roxyiconoclast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have read that Marpessa Dawn spoke no Portuguese, and that her singing was dubbed by the “Muse of Bossa Nova” Nara Leão. Next time I watch the film, I’ll be wondering if her spoken lines were dubbed also, or just learned very carefully. Her beauty certainly lit up the screen though.
There does seem to be a soundtrack album of the original play, “Orfeu da Conceição,” which was the basis for “Orfeu Negro.” And there is an all-Brazilian film “Orfeu,” a 1999 drama also based on the play and directed by Carlos Diegues - but I haven’t been able to find it.

If I hear that someone is studying dance, I mention this film to them to make sure they know about it, and if I'm feeling down, I can watch the first few minutes of it. Also, there was a more modern film, I think it was Natural Born Killers, in which "unused" parts of the screen, like a painting on a wall or something like that, had little movies inserted into them; and I have to wonder whether that was an influence from this film. In this film we constantly see action going on out the windows, through doorways, and so on.

    • @varadero1839

      Hi Channing,
I posted this long ago, and had a wonderful friend who lived in a similar situation in Rio. When I visited I was always welcomed at that home, as well as other neighboring families. Like the rest of the world, I understand that this type of camaraderie has changed drastically. I'm sad to know this.
