    Thank you for doing this side by side test. It was very informative. I wish you shot the Hero10 without a red filter. The GoPros starting with Hero6 do not need the filter. Please stop using red filters with GoPros. Hero5 and earlier needed red filters. I have used the Paralenz before. It is by far the easiest camera to use underwater. The quality and stabilization is not the best, but I liked that it recorded depth with the video and unlike the GoPro the Paralenz will never fog up.

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Todd for your comment. But I have to disagree on the red filter issue. Sure, you can use GoPros without a red filter, but the results (color-wise) are not as good as when using filters in my opinion. One can argue, that you can leave the red filter when filming in deeper depth, so you're not losing any more or the already limited light down there. But generally speaking and especially within the depth range of 5-12 meters, will improve the look of the footage.
      Regarding the Paralenz, yes, I agree that it is very easy to use underwater. I just wish the Vaquita had image stabilization.

    • @ashic
      @ashic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MatthiasLebo Have to agree with Todd. You'll get MUCH better results by ditching the filter and adding some red in post. A filter blocks out all the other colours - it doesn't add red. And at depth - even moderate depth - you're starved for light. More light gives better captures. We use expensive lights to get whatever light we can - using a filter to block out what's already there makes no sense. Also, a filter is another layer for light to pass through, and adds a constant amount of red. In post, you can add just as much red as required, and can change that with depth. In fact, that's what the paralenz is doing. Red filters really don't have a place for high quality video these days.

    I liked this side by side comparison. The difference of the cameras at different depths was, for me, unexpected. Thanks for the content. As a purchaser of the LUT's (and for anyone else, they are great - color correction was always too complex for me and the LUT makes it super easy), I wonder if there should be a LUT that is depth specific? Could the Valquita use a different LUT for the shallow water or could the Go-Pro use a different one for deeper? (I know - technically the same thing one for deep and one for shallow, but more a way to hide their respective weaknesses)

    for the colors and everything, you can deactivate image settings to have a very raw image and then have amazing images in editing later

  • @scubacastor
    @scubacastor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for this test which is not easy to interpret because both cameras have quite a different approach for underwater filming. It's hard to really make a comparison with the same parameters side by side here because the color correction/filter and ISO are constrained differently. The DCC feature on the Vaquita according to the product specs is something supposed to adapt to the depth. Since the vaquita has a depth sensor, it probably calculates light attenuation and a theoretical light spectrum at a given depth and then applies some sort of color correction according these estimates to record in the end some pleasant colors (and we don't really know how ISOs are dealt with , not sure it's possible to limit ISO on this model). For the Gopro, there's no DCC and it is constrained by an ISO limit. The filter color properties stay the same whatever the depth is and the filter absorbs some light. Therefore this setup for the Gopro will be advantageous only in a narrow range of depths where the Vaquita is here completely free to adapt for the best or the worst. In the end, it's hard to tell which is the winner because you could have tweaked your settings or remove the filter for higher depths for the Gopro and we also see that the Vaquita seems to do the job quite well at depth and not so nicely close the surface.

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree mate, I just wanted to see with this test which method works better underwater to get good looking video clips. And like you say, I wouldn’t wanna name a winner. They both do a decent job in my opinion with the GoPro being a bit better in shallow water and the Vaquita performing better at greater depths.
      With a little tweaking in post you can get the footage from both cameras to look nice - at least in most circumstances. So I guess it is going to come down to personal preference as to what camera is best for who.

    It looked like the narrower field of view works better for the murkier waters. The wider field of view seems to provide more emphasis on the cloudiness while the narrower field sort of de-emphasizes it.

    • @MatthiasLebo

      Hey Brock, thank you. Unless I have missed an update on the Vaquita, it still does not have image stabilization. That's one of its big drawbacks and the reason why it's really hard to get stable footage with the Vaquita. The GoPro stabilization on the other hand is out of this world.

      @MatthiasLebo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thanasis
      Thank you for your comment and your kind words. Your question is close to impossible to answer for me without having any additional information. How and for what are you going to be using the new camera? What is the most important thing the camera needs to be able to do? Will you edit/color correct your footage? What’s your budget? These are just some of the questions that need to be answered before I can suggest any of the two cameras to you. There is not such a thing as a perfect camera and it hugely depends on the answers to the questions above which one will be a better fit for your type of shooting. Hope this makes sense?

    What File Type does Each Camera Save your Videos into?
    And How About Sound. Surly there won't be a Lot of Sound Under Water, as Opposed to on Land, But Again, Sound might Still be An Issue at Times?
    With the Paralenz, can you Post Process on other Software other than their App? If yes, what Software Do You Use and Recommend both for Cell Phones and Laptops and Computers ?

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Vaquita saves your videos as mp4 using the H.264 codec. The GoPro creates mov files using the HEVC codec. Both have an integrated microphone and record sound. Yes, of course you can work with the Vaquita footage in whatever editing software you want. Personally I use Final Cut Pro X as my primary editing software on either a laptop or desktop setup. I don't edit on my phone. Not practical for me.

    I have a buddy who uses Corel Paint Shop Pro for photos and Corel Videostudio Pro for video. 1) Can Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, or Adobe Premier do both photos and video? 2) Do your LUTs work with Corel? 3) Without turning into a "Pro" - which software package would you recommend for a guy who just wants his new Paralenz footage to look really good?

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin
      Thanks for your questions. Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve as well as Premiere Pro are designed specifically for video editing. You can do certain things to photos as well, but by far not as many as in i.e. Lightroom. They are just different tools for different jobs. Apparently your buddy also uses to different applications (Coral Paint Shop Pro & Coral Videostudio Pro) for photos or videos respectively.
      You will be able to use my LUTs inside Coral Videostudio. Have a look at this tutorial from Coral Videostudio to see how it's done: th-cam.com/video/Izi8-TN0pog/w-d-xo.html
      This is a very difficult question and the answer depends on so many factor that I just don't know. Personally I like Final Cut Pro X because I like how user friendly it is and I've just gotten used to using it over the years. I don't think there is one application that is particularly better than others. They all do pretty much the same thing and are really just a tool to get the job done. You will have to decide for yourself which one suits you best. Davinci is free in its base version, so it might be a good one to at least try out and see how you like it. Final Cut Pro X and Premiere Pro on the other hand will cost something.
      I hope this helps a little bit.
      Cheers
      Matthias

  • @TheTvaiX
    @TheTvaiX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are expert, but as novice, I see:
    1. Sebastian is better in Vaquita picture, it seems it have clearer foreground... GoPro little too match red, but probably can be corrected in post. Also I think Vaquita by format is few cm maybe closer and is it difference what helps?
    2. Footage it shows GoPro clearer depth, clearer water in image... - probably better AI algorithm.
    Other suggestion, it would be cool to see same footage before and after (side by side) after you done post magic - running, it would be super cool! :)

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment mate. Yes the Vaquita is a little longer and therefore about 3 cm closer to Sebastian. But that’s not enough to really make a difference.
      It could very well be that the GoPro has better AI, but then the Vaquita’s footage is more desaturated than than on the GoPro. If saturation is added to the Vaquita footage, the background will appear clearer as well.
      Thanks for the suggestion, I will do a video about color correction soon, showing before and after examples. 👍🏻

    I recently got a paralenz; as an amateur I find it less obtrusive than the gopro. It produces excellent footage but doesn't seem to detract from enjoying the dive. The problem with gopro type cameras is that I spent all the time looking at the viewfinder and not really appreciating the dive.

      I completely get what you’re saying Dean. And yes, you’re probably right. Because it’s difficult to see anything at all on the small screen one tends to not look at it at all and rather concentrate on watching what’s in front of you. Not a bad thing in my opinion. 😉

    i have a GP9 and vaquita that i have side by side. the vaquita has no stabilization, if it had any at all i would probably never use my GP again. but it doesn't, so i continue to shoot side by side. i would suggest next time you want to compare these side by side, that you use the same settings for both. 5K on the GP vs 4K on the vaquita, is not really an apples to apples comparison. maybe this is being picky, but if you want to compare image quality, why not create conditions where you actually capture the same image. that means same ISO, same field of view etc. the other relevant question is cost of course, the V approx $800 and GP around $400. in my experience if you go past 12-15m in depth, you absolutely need some good lights or the GP starts to get real dark real fast. past 30m, all lights all the time. the V seems unaffected by the depth, and honestly i rarely even take my GP if my dive profile exceeds 20m.
    but it is really a matter of personal preference. i love the simplicity of the V. point. shoot. done. no lights needed, no extra case, no extra batteries. for that i am content to have the lower depths colors be a little quirky.

    A Couple of Very Very Serious Aspects that Showed up in another Vloggers Review of the Paralenz was 1) The App Was a Total Disaster.
    Because of this, He spent days Trying to Find Other Ways to Access his Films but it took the help of Another Photographer to find a Reasonable Solution.That my Friend Seems Like a Deal Breaker. I hope you can Tell us that The Designers have Fixed All Issues with this App.
    The Second and Pretty Serious drawback was ( every Dive he made, He ran into The Camera Would Constantly Freeze up. I hope you Can Assure us This Issue has been Resolved as Well.
    The Last Issue was Close Ups we're Extremely Fuzzy and Out of Focus.
    I hope this Issue , Again has Been Addressed.
    His Issues we're with the Second Version Camera , as I Don't think He has Ever Reviewed The First Version.
    For a Camera in the $700+ Price Range, That's Very Scary to say the Least.

    • @MatthiasLebo
      @MatthiasLebo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well first of all Steve I can't assure you of anything because I'm not the developer of the camera, just another user sharing his experience with this camera. Whoever that "vlogger" is, I think he or she got a few things wrong. And it would be interesting to know from when this review was.
      1.) The app used to be quite bad. That's a fact. They have worked on it though in recent times and have made it work better. Is it perfect? No! Do you need the app? No! You can access all your footage without problems without ever using the app. Just take out the SD card and transfer it onto a computer or laptop. Done.
      2.) I have never experienced this with my Vaquita cameras (I have several), so I can't make any comments on this.
      3.) Well, if you read the manual of the first generation Vaquita you will find out that the minimal focusing distance of the lens is about 0.5 meters. If you go any closer than that, it's just normal that your footage will not be in focus. Paralenz offers a close up lens that can be attached to the front of the camera to enable the Vaquita to focus to about 10cm away from the lens. And then the Vaquita 2nd Gen has a different lens which can focus up to 25cm away from the lens. Knowing what your equipment can do and where the limitations are is key.

    the reliability of the constipation is very doubtful . hypothetically speaking, the camera is in his hand and someone has grabbed it by the front and is pulling it towards him. the diver naturally pulls at his backside... it would be ideal for such a price to make a twist-off according to the type of vegetable cans on the locking ring. assign a sky-high price and do it perfectly then. I think so. And another dubious advantage is diving up to 350 meters. I'm sorry, but there are so many people like Herbert Nietzsch, Alexander Kostyshen, Nuno Gomez, Pascal Bernabe, Mark Andrews. And let's not forget about oxygen poisoning, nitrogen anesthesia. Of course, I know about the existence of trimix, heliox mixtures ..., but how many can afford them? In the main mass , all the same amateurs are immersed . The maximum depth of immersion in the air without consequences is about 24 meters. I was immersed at a maximum of 30 ( I am not sensitive to nitrogen ) . I don't see the point in GPS, plus there is no video stabilization. I don't even really find words about the dive log for such a thing.eni r . How can I see my location underwater on the camera monitor ? I have enough osmo action and stabilization behind my eyes and the white balance is clear and , and, and ... you can't even put this one next to it. I'm sorry for the truth. does anyone disagree ? ready for discussion. even with those who don't have it, and I won't use it as an argument.

    totally wrong settings on the gopro...you don't shoot auto white balance that deep...natural is a lot better for color grading. and always flat profile. and red filter at 5 m??? i think red filter below 10 is total nonsense. actually red filter with auto balance is probably a receipt for a disaster footage. the 10 with flat profile and natural color renders really good footage for post and there is no need of red filter at all. If you want to directly use the footage and not to edit perhaps to some extent you can benefit of the red filter. other than that is literally worse.
