  • The Fokker F27 Friendship was the most succesful aircraft produced by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer. For that reason the Fokker Heritage Flight (FHF) was keen to preserve and fly one and in 2004 they managed to acquire the very first production aircraft that had started its commercial life with Aer Lingus in 1958.
I was fortunate enough to be on the first flight organized by the FHF on April 29, 2006, which happened to be Queen's Day, our national holiday.
The flight departed Lelystad, on a westerly heading over some colourful flower fields towards the North Sea coast and then over Amsterdam where, at 5:40, festive crowds can be seen on the Museum Square. Then back towards Lelystad for landing.
Unfortunately this aircraft was involved in a minor taxi accident in 2007 which damaged its wing, which proved beyond the financial means of the FHF to repair. The good thing is that this aircraft can still be admired in well-preserved condition at the Aviodrome Air Museum in Lelystad.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful flight! There is nothing like the sights and sounds of an F - 27 or an FH227B!! Reminds me of the days when I would fly Britt Airways from Evansville, IN to Chicago O'Hare when they took over the route from Delta Airlines in the early 80's. The sound of the Rolls Royce Dart engines was so unique. I loved the "whistle" sounds, especially during the startup and taxi. I have been to the Netherlands and flown on KLM, a wonderful airline rich in aviation history. I believe NLM was a subsidiary operating "City Hoppers." to feed the KLM hub at AMS. I wish that they could have kept this aircraft airworthy. There is just nothing like it today. Thanks again for the great memories!

This brings back super memories of flying from Jersey to Norwich during the school summer holiday to stay with my grandparents.

Thank you for sharing this - so much nostalgia! As a kid I first gained a love of aircraft and flying living in the Middle East, where we regularly flew on the Oman Aviation F27s, and the pilots always invited me up to the cockpit as a kid. They're what made me want to learn to fly in the first place, and when I was 15 living in Egypt I did get my first flying lessons from Dutch and English friends who shared a Piper Arrow and were both qualified flying instructors.

One of the most outstanding features of this airplane is the gigantic spar connecting both wings (minute 3:46). This is one of the best features for the Fokker F-27. By the way, another excellent turboprop, the DASH8 is with the same feature, nevertheless the spar assembly isn't noticeable from the inside of the passenger compartment. This makes DASH 8 not so "slick" and aerodynamic. Both are for me the very best in their class.

And that spar was carried over into the F50. I remember on one return flight I nearly bumped my head on it while boarding on both the outbound and inbound flight but I learned my lesson after that 😅

I understand that this F. 27 Friendship series 100 was also operated by the National Airways Corporation (NAC)/ Air New Zealand.

Yes, that’s correct. As far as I know a total of 25 F.27 aircraft were flown by NAC/ANZ, including some later models.

Yep. As a young child I flew in them a number of times between Auckland and Napier to visit grandparents in the mid-late 1980s. I think they were both F27-100s and F27-500s with some pretty unique lighting inside. I loved them even though back then I didn't understand/apprecite the uniqueness and awesomeness of how they sounded at every stage of the flight - starting up, takiing, takeoff, flight, landing, even shutdown and watching the propellor gracefully slow and stop. This video really took me back - thank you :)

Oh wow turned out this plane was in NZ from 1966 to 1981, as ZK-NAH. I've twice tried to post this with a link to the source but the post keeps disappearing. You may just have to search or it. It was also VH-NLS when it was in Australia and there's another TH-cam video with multiple former pilots in the comments talking about their memories flying her.

Beautiful view of the propeller, even though most probably find it highly irritating.

To me the whole point of flying in a propliner, be it turbo or piston, is to actually see that prop in action. You will see in my other videos that in the Superconstellation, DC-3, DC-4 and Ju-52 I will always try to be seated near where the action is :-) And in the Catalina there is a superb view of the engines from the blisters.
