This is one of the most powerful conversations I have had the privilege to hear. I have appreciated your podcast for a long time now. You share true doctrine and these words motivate me to be a better and more committed student of the scriptures. I can’t thank you enough for your work and your devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The two of you discuss the issues that are so pertinent to our time and these conversations are essential. You help support others along their path of discipleship. I hope you continue to have more of these conversations. I don’t have other family that I can interface with on these topics in this way. It is so refreshing to hear voices that are grounded, steady and stalwart.
Thank you so much for your work.

Greg, this was one of the best podcasts I have ever watched. It is really worth the full hour. It addressed some of the topics that my wife and I discussed about why people do not discern what’s going on out there when it seems so very obvious to us. It really does boil down to immersing yourself in the Scriptures and taking the Holy Ghost to be your guide. Very well done!

Well I know that the Delhin's, the Shelves, The Stones, and the Nemos or the social media activists are all smoking the Mists of Darkness away like Chimnley Stacks and violating the Word of Wisdom in doing so and spreading that darkness around in the church. David Alexander calls it the Accusatory Fog. Being an Activist to tear down the faith and testimony of others and criticizing and murmuring against Church leaders or picking controversial Church topics to oppose the Church on and gather to themselves their own followers goes against the doctrine of Unity that the prophet of the Church has called for..This goes back to that Speech that Elder Corbitt gave against Woke Activism in the Church. And that was given about a year or so ago now.

I listened to your podcast as I was walking my daily 5 miles, and the ZINGER was in the last 5(?) minutes when Bruce talked about a book he’d written that was turned down by Deseret Book. You two succinctly told me the core of the whole discussion : “We get what we want. If we want the scriptures, we’ll read the scriptures!” You really opened my eyes to all the “fluff” we put up with in this world! It is the word of the Lord that is our anchor! It’s the REAL STUFF! When I joined the church at 27 years old I received an incredible gift to discern spirits. I really needed it. This thankfully carried on throughout my full time mission. This gift to discern was at a height in the MTC. It was overwhelming to say the least. It kept me awake most nights. I knew that there were spirits surrounding me in my bed at night. I instinctively knew that I was speaking spirit to spirit with those I came into contact with. It felt like a burning in the bosom, tingling in my feet, ears and hands.
I had various powerful experiences that have taught me that the Lord will teach you through certain gifts. We worry too much about what we know. The Holy Ghost matters most. The Holy Ghost can influence every situation we are in for good if we desire for him to do so.
I had an experience as a newly baptised member that has taught me a lot about discernment. It’s taken me until today to realise that there are spirits around us 24 hrs a day. 🤔👍🏻

I tell any and all people that Heavenly Father wants me to tell them he loves them.
Sometimes I say more with the whole story of the blessing I was given. Sometimes not.
I do it by the Holy Spirit whispering to me. It has been such a wonderful journey.
I always have positive reactions. I recently realized some don’t understand the Holy Spirit's ways. Then I explain it is the Holy Spirit speaking to them and tell them that the HS tells the truth of all things.
I asked Heavenly Father why I was doing this. What am I learning? I was told one reason so I could better learn about listening to the Holy Spirit.
The reactions of the people are amazing. I now tell people on the phone and get the same positive reaction.

@trishachristensen7667 i was just getting on here to state a similar comment. I personally can say that because I was not brought up in an active family, that it has been so difficult and confusing for me, to follow the scriptures! Seminary is where I learned to love the gospel teachings. However, after graduating, I fell back into old habits of not studying. I read the scriptures now and then, but felt great frustration because I didn't understand them.
Visiting Nauvoo, Winter Quarters, Adam-ondi-ahmen, Far West, Carthage and Liberty Jails around 2016 really lit a fire under me to start my reading back up. Then in 2020 the CFM Program changed my life. I listened to CWIC, and Greg really taught me a lot!! I'm the type that I study better if I'm introduced first. If Im given a summary, back history, anything as a point of reference then It gets me started. My go that I faithfully listen to are Greg Matsen (CWIC) Randy Brown, "Talking Scriptures" with Bryce Dunford & Mike Day, and any program with Bruce Porter or David Butler. I've watched ward radio a little, and I really do enjoy the stick of Joseph, but sometimes they're too silly for me lol Just keep your scriptures by you and pause to write notes (especially with talking scriptures) It's amazing to reflect and ponder! The Holy Ghost will help and teach you!
I've appreciated CWIC/Greg, mostly for keeping me savvy to current religious events and its awareness. I learn from every episode!

Your comments tie into my study this morning:
"...and yet they did deny the more parts of his gospel, insomuch that they did receive all manner of wickedness..."
    - 4 Nephi 1:27
Seems to me many are denying justice and truth in favor of distorted tolerance (with virtue-signaling & distorted empathy).
This took me to Alma 13:12:
"Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look upon sin save it were with abhorrence..."
It seems many have changed this into:
"[They] could not look upon sin save it were with [tolerance, Diversity, Inclusion, & Equity]"
I think this imbalance between truth & love, justice & mercy is one of the main things Elder Holland was referring to in conference.

Thoughts of an older lady that my parents met in Canada on their mission keep coming to mind when speaking of the Prophet's statement about the constant guidance and comforting of the Holy Ghost. She had spent years in prison camp for stealing a handful of wheat which she put in her pocket. Her three children had died of starvation during WWII. She thoroughly believed there was no God. The trauma and length of these horrible experiences convinced her that God did not exist. We know traumatic events are coming and are happening on the earth especially with natural disasters. The only way that we will survive these coming events will be by preparing ourselves daily with prayer, scriptures, taking the sacrament, temple worship, and gratitude for daily blessings will help us. Just hearing the news is stressful without even being in areas of danger physically or spiritually.

You appear to be part of a growing trend among members of our church. You revere dead prophets and revile living ones. Let me guess, the first presidency and Q12 don't come out strongly enough against the woke nonsense in the world? Maybe the prophet's remark on the vaccine being "safe and effective" turned you off. I get it. I wish they'd come out preaching fire and brimstone, too, but that's not their style for whatever reason. The Church has not, nor will it ever endorse all the LGBT nonsense. I also wish they'd speak in stronger terms sometimes, but those men are still prophets and apostles and this Church, which was expressly set up for these times, is still true.
For what it's worth: never let your politics get in the way of your covenants. It's rampant nowadays. People on the left (especially) and right turn against leaders because something the leaders say offends their political views. Don't let that happen.

In April 2018 we were given a commandant and road map for navigating and surviving (spiritually) the days 4 years into. When the time of tribulation began in 2020 many members demanded those in Salt Lake tell them what to do and think. There were three responses telling them to think and pray for themselves. The demands intensified. A photo was was published and many took that as their answer. A letter went out without the revealed seal we were instructed would be required on all official communications. People declared it a commandant, then used it to condemn and oppress fellow worshippers.
We were given a warning at the end of this last conference with a time constraint of 6 months. That warning is built on the foundation of the commandant given in April 2018. Without obedience to that 2018 directive there is no understanding the current instructions.

Clear thinking! One of the problems in my opinion with getting ppl to read scriptures is this, you can’t ignore the fact that for years we’ve had a decline in school systems and also we can’t ignore the issue of increasing ADD and ADHD issues with children which I think is brought on by really bad food and chemicals so it is quite a feet to keep their attentionIt’s a struggle. They may be wanting to read it, but get discouraged when there’s that barrier of understanding because of their inability to read which comes with learning disabilities and I think there’s a lot of that. That being said, God knows this so the faith and desire needs to be great!

Great episode, Greg. Really enjoyed this one. One of the greatest discoveries of the Book of Mormon that I came across many ,many years ago, talks about this very subject of discernment. The key to understanding and applying the gift of discernment is found in Moroni 7:12-19. Particularly verses 15-17. [ 15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night. 16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. 17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.] It is so crystal clear of how to judge between good and evil in these verses. It even states we can have a PERFECT KNOWLEDGE of choosing between good and evil. Not many, if any, does the scriptures teach of perfection that I know of. I study these verses often to stay fresh and REMINDED of judging between good and evil.

Thank you for sharing your discussion with Bruce Porter. It was very thought provoking and interesting. Knowing these mists of darkness are present in our day and the truth we have and that can be read and found in God’s word, I find myself asking how best can I bridge the gap with those I’ve been commanded to love (all people of course, including those in my own faith who believe differently) without infringing upon their agency or beliefs, or imposing/forcing my beliefs upon them potentially alienating them or groups of people which could widen that gap between them and truth? And doing so with integrity to truth and my personal discipleship and covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. A challenge of a lifetime no doubt! Elder Oaks gave a great talk in the Oct 2014 Conference titled, Loving Others and Living with Differences, that contains a lot of great counsel with scriptural references that I have found personally helpful in this wrestle. I would invite anyone else who may be wrestling with what our individual and collective approach as fellow Christians in this regard should be especially given our current tempered political and social climates.

The milk and then the steak. I feel such joy that I can finally study the scriptures and they have come alive for me. They are living scriptures. I want more. I do believe more. I came to find understanding and to line up with the Savior. In these troubled times, i found a source. I see how the scriptures make sense of my life. I see why the Lord wanted us to have what we have. Thank you for such a great discussion. I have had it on my mind a lot of what I will present to the Lord when it is my turn to report. ❤

This was a fun topic to listen to. I know how difficult it must have been to speak about. I am so grateful you and Bruce are willing to discuss this. I really like how Bruce said he can speak to what the scriptures say but not what someone thinks and feels is the truth. I am amazed how people forget that the gospel is found in the scriptures. It is true that we can receive revelation from our Heavenly Father when we are willing to do his will. It was great hearing you guys talk about understanding "Gods" divination/revelation VS. our own wants and desires. It is important to love our fellow brothers and sisters, but it is also our responsibility to call them to repentance when they rebel from God in the name of love and tolerance. Father and Christ did not say their Gospel would be easy; we have to choose to do what is right when hard things are placed before us. Like the scriptures say man cannot serve two masters. We should choose God and his son, thank you for agency. Awesome job as always Greg and thank you for having Bruce on again, he is always great to hear from.

“Most faithful”? interesting comment. In my years on this planet, I remember making that statement after my mission and interestingly it wasn’t a year later life’s trials were making a mockery of my spiritual pride. I’d be careful before patting oneself on the back. Living our faith, especially in Utah, is relatively easy. We don’t have the same physical hardships our pioneer ancestors dealt with and our relatively easy lives could be upended in minutes with an act of God or simply pride, which no one is immune. There could be many ways the Saints could be challenged and these gifts of the spirit will be necessary.

    • @greentree_
      @greentree_ หลายเดือนก่อน

@ so you don’t call those striving to endure to the end faithful? What do you call them then? The trials of the pioneers are different from the trials of today. They were more physical with the lack of technology. Life today is not “easy”, more comfortable with technology, yes, but more difficult spiritually. Our leaders have said multiple times that the most valiant spirits were sent to earth these days when the devil is working his hardest when he knows his time is short.
I didn’t grow up in UT or the US, I’m from a different country where I was the only member in my family (for a few years), and the only member in my school, the only member in my work, etc.

I fully agree that one the biggest issues today comes down to the idea you mentioned, "do I THINK I am " listneing to and acting on the truth. There are so many sources of confusion present in the world right now that especially the inexperienced person has great difficulty determining what is the FULL truth. I say inexperienced deliberatley in the sense that we heve to "try," meaning to practice, the principle so that we gain understanding of how to use it. Even Christ learned through the things that he suffered, i.e. experienced. When we are familiar enough with how to practice a principle we then begin to understand the "why" of its purpose and value and power. This is also the case with the gift of discernment. But how do we know that our "practice sessionn" with it produces in a true or accurate result? That is where scripture examples "bear witness" to our mind AND the Holy Ghost bears witness to our spirit (heart). I experienced this many times while serving as a bishop in Wyoming and later as a counselori in a stake presidency in Alamosa Colorado. I heard myself say many, many times when giving a blessing in different situations that the person would find the "confirmation" they were seeking by reading from the Doctrine and Covenants. Why the D&C? Because it ismthe only book of scripture that is actually first person scripture. Meaning these verses ARE the voice of the Lord, Him giving his direct answers, and not someone telling what they heard him say like all the others scriptures do. Then the person receiving the blessing would come back to me sometime later and tell me how that blessing had been fulfilled. Too many people today, especially the rising adult generation have been fed a diet of a quick response and rather put and idea to the test of the scriptures, they instead follow the fad!

At 47:50 you ask the question how do you get away from the scriptures? In pondering this myself I have noticed this notion termed, “being baptized with fire and the Holy Ghost.” The various anti-Christs all seem to have a common experience that they were deceived by an angel of light or messenger. They felt they had gone to the temple but broke order with Fathers house of order and came into His presence without the enduring to the end and receiving the coronation ordinances which afford a worthy couple to have confirmed upon them the keys for such an experience.
The result is a posture that the authorized leadership is fallen. They have had this experience and they always announce publicly that which under proper circumstances they would covenant not to disclose. They have a baptism of fire and then can not endure the experience and trod down the path of say Korihor. These patterns and the Temple ordinances our given for a reason and it appears Father has His reasons and order of things when it comes to arriving back into His presence. Just an observation

I believe this to be very simple. Isaiah addressed this topic with king Ahaz when he said in essence - You do not understand (you are deceived) because you are not loyal.
We do not need worry about anyone beyond ourselves. Our prime concern ought to be our proclivity to be deceived. We can know for ourselves if we are loyal to G-d. Isaiah also clearly pointed out how we become separated from G-d. He said we are separated from G-d by “Transgressing the Law, Changing the Ordinances and Breaking the Covenants.”

I know members who support the culture based on the scriptures they read. In the end, it will all be properly sorted. Christ sheep are numbered, those who care will find him, and they will find him through the scriptures with the aid of the holy ghost.

I don't believe it is scriptural that Eve believed she would not die if she ate the fruit. She did not know who Satan was. She was deceived about his identity. But she SAW that there was no other way to keep all of God's commandments without partaking the fruit.

Good conversation. one thing I can't understand is how can you promote pastor jeff who opposes the church and then so nonchalantly speak about discernment. Contradictory If you ask me.

29:30 11 And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell.
You lose “knowledge” and wisdom until…
