    You don't know how much this benefited my pug. She had lost all use of her back legs so my husband followed your instructions and made her a wheelchair. It was wonderful. Fit her well and before we knew it, she learned to walk again. She went wherever she wanted and knew how to scoot around. THANK YOU!!! You are wonderful.

      +James Fralic I made this same wheelchair for my dog the same day I commented. It cost more than $18 for the supplies. Probably about double with the cost of the wheels and the velco straps and the glue being the most expensive items. It took some tweaking to get the measurements correct for my medium size dog (60 lbs). I didn't glue any of the pieces so I could adjust lengths until I got it right. I was going to try to put a video together to show how I did it, but never got around to it.

    Thank you very much for this video. I'm headed to the Home Depot tonight to build this for my 13 year old 30 pound beagle whom lost his mobility last week and has been dragging his back half around and is getting sores from this now. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your putting this together for all of us to learn from. Dr. Watson will be so pleased. If anybody is new to this, I can throw you a helpful hint regarding dragging themselves around the house. Simply get cheep t-shirt and put it on the dog when they are in the house and resting and not connected to the wheel chair. This will save on sores, infections and discomfort while they are not in mobility mode. PS. I agree with you MadeMan :P

    I LOVE this SO much!! We just found out our 3 1/5 year old Frenchie has IVDD with a deformed T-11. His immobility literally happened overnight. But as I have had time to ponder on how this happened, I actually saw the signs but didn't connect that it was abnormal or there was something wrong with his spine. I thought his occasional stumble was part of his gait or just clumsiness. I am SO sad that I didn't catch a clue for him sooner. :-(

    • @KendrasMinistries
      @KendrasMinistries 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michelle, same here with our 4 yr. Dachshund. He had a incident last year that I didn’t register as IVDD. Who would at their age.
      Anyway, I have been going to a Vet who does Accupuncture, laser therapy and Chiropractic. We have kept him crated except for potty and lately walking to strengthen his muscle.
      IVDD is not something we would of recognized even though this was our second Dixie to have it. That said, the 1st was 14 when his happened. He bounced back from Accupuncture as well. 👍
      Our 4 yr. old is coming back too. Just a bit slower. His back toes still are not responding which makes for a drunken sailor episode. I am going to make this wheelchair this to give him longer time out of the crate and hope. Today after our walk he seems depressed. So let’s make em wheels!!! 🦼🏍 🎉

      Hello A Marie I also have a Shih tzu that I need to make a wheel chair for. What is IVDD? The vet couldn't explain why his hind legs are not strong enough to walk on his own. Also did you change the height and length for your pup? I'm nervous to try this but it looks simple. I would love to hear your feed back!

      Fellow shih tzu owner with a partially paralyzed doggie. 4 years ago 3 of her disks ruptured, she had surgery within a day and made a pretty good recovery but she's going on 9 now and seems to be less able to walk every day. Thinking this is the next step and would love to hear if a mobility device like this worked out for your dog.

    Great video. I like this design because it's simple and lightweight. I'm making one for my 14 yr old lab. Using 3/4" pipe (my dog is an 80 lb lab). Got the same wheels in the vid. The correct bolt size is 1/2" x 3 1/2". As for padding the straps, I'll probably use seatbelt padding which you can get at Walmart or Auto Zone. All in, it should run about $65, vs. $350+ to buy one. Thanks to the orig poster and everyone else who offered suggestions.

      What length were the pipes you used? I also have an 80 lb senior lab in need of a wheelchair. I'm just wondering how to scale the size of this wheelchair model to fit his body.

    • @Wooster77
      @Wooster77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I built one for my lab using the same design as in this vid. It wasn't as sturdy as I had hoped for, considering the weight of my dog. I needed to buy a harness and other parts to support my dog properly and it still wasn't ideal. To be honest, next time I'll just buy a pre-made wheelchair made out of metal, which is sturdier. I've seen some for under $200. PVC is okay for smaller/lighter dogs,

    I agree with the other person; I don't believe his back legs should touch the ground. I notice he did not start out using his hind legs but eventually was making effort to. But if they are raised higher he will still be able to go through the motion of doing so but with out the need for them to touch the ground/floor. In the long run this would be best for him. Also I believe cushions should be provided especially for his private part. I can't really tell but it looks as if the strap is on it. Very nice video and I will building one for my baby.

      See below. I commented below to p4....They don't drag much as he still moves them. I read that you shouldn't have his hips too high. Thanks for the comment though

    • @jeanniematthews615
      @jeanniematthews615 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark, thanks for responding; I did not expect you to since the post was a couple of months ago. I also was aware that the hips should be leveled. I am going to add the individual leg straps with cushion. I strongly feel and I hope you provide your pet with cushion and adjust his strap where his private part is sitting on; if you don't it will become raw and or irritated. Something as simple as a soft hand towel would be better than just the rough/hard Velcro straps. Also any dragging is not good rather "not much" are "very much", this is not acceptable. At least not for my boy.

    Thank you Mark. Our pug has a degenerative disease. We started out with a cart based on your model and have modified it over time into the quad she has now. @@lisagendhar4384 Hi Lisa, this won't let me post pictures for you, but my husband used 90 degree angles to connect the front 2 legs. We measured the length of her legs, and cut the pipe (add the wheel height too) for the height on the front. Our pug passed within 9 months of being diagnosed and my husband passed last year. I only check his emails once in awhile, so I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. If you leave your email, i'll send you some photos. Rubber booties for the feet are a good idea. We eventually put a handle on her cart so we could still take her out for walks, and the rubber boots protected her feet if they dragged.

      I think all you would have to do would make the height of the piece that holds the wheels just about one half to one inch higher. I want my baby's feet to touch for rehab because she had spine surgery and hope she will regain function but I am sure there are some furbabies that don't have that option

    • @daniellevieira8159
      @daniellevieira8159 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't know if it's still going to help you but there are a few important measures to take: the lateral of your dog - (the beginning of the front legs to the 'end' of the back), the height - (the beginning of the back leg to the paw) and finally, the width - (with a rigid ruler, measure the hip of your dog). Those measurements are the basics for you to cut the pipe just right. I'm doing one for my German Shepard right now! Hope it helps! (:
