  • The action moments in HBO's Barry are few and far in between... And yet, they are all sublime, and unlike anything we've seen on TV. Here's why.

    I keep telling people I know that they HAVE to watch this show, and they don't, and now I understand how Breaking Bad people felt when they couldn't get their friends to watch it (until everyone was talking about it and they suddenly become interested)

      We share the same pain friend. It can be frustrating watching such good storytelling go unappreciated by the general public. (e.g. Hannibal, Deadwood, etc.)
      I can't prove it but, I theorize that there is an inverse correlation between two factors: the better a show is, the smaller it's audience gets.

    This show reminds me so much of atlanta. Doesn’t surprise me considering that they share the same directors on some episodes, Hiro Murai. They balance realism with insanity, surrealism. Both these show make you say “wow this is so realistic” and “ what the fuck is going on” at the same time

      Makes me think of the episode where Paper Boi gets robbed, and then he runs into the forest and finds that crazy old man who eventually tries to hunt him down with a knife. It goes from realistic and terrifying to completely insane.

    This is one of the few shows which are actually funny based on their writing alone, warranting actual, genuine laughter. Without overly relying on over the top gags and quips for cheap laughs.

    I never noticed how minimal the editing was until you pointed it out. It’s almost like we might be asking too much from editors. In Barry the quality is so visible because the decisions are visible. So since all the decision are made, the depictions the editor gets to make are more about when is the right moment to cut.
    I feel like there’s a give-the-artist-the-space-to-craft kind of approach to the production at Barry. Which makes sense for a show about an actor

    the aesthetic and appeal of the action, in my opinion, comes down to one simple premise that Hader points out many times in bts interviews: We do not want to look cool. And if we look too cool, we redo it.

    I really like how they make bullet flight so realistic cause it really pulls me into the scene. A lot of Hollywood productions make gun fights seem too fun and there’s no real sense of fear or jeopardy.
    But I think a combination of camera work and SFX makes bullets seem to whiz through objects with terrifying speed and penetration in Barry. It’s such a good show.

    I was forced to watch the show on my phone with AirPods while binging it over the last 7 days, and I was thrilled to find the sounds design and surround sound to be simply amazing.

    The script and comedy of barry is so unique and unlike other shows out rn the comedy is unexpected, absurd, creative, and the words they choose is so human. Its not like usual comedies or sitcom w a punchline and actual joke, instead the comedy comes from how absurd the events are, how barry is autistic af, and how lucky barry is or how stupid the people around him are. The show embraces the stupidity, the surreal, the absurd.

    @joannelee5574 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definitely agree with everything you said!! On top of that, the absolute absence of glamorized violence (cool music, super cinematic shots) like another comment mentioned absolutely lends itself to building Barry as a character you’re definitely not supposed to see as a cool, badass antihero but as a guy who tried to change but keeps falling back into awful fucking decisions (and yk, commits actual murder). The realistic violence on top of a background with absurd situations just makes it silly to watch, which it is, but it also makes violence feel more heavy, and all of it does have actual consequences.

    Well one thing I've definitely noticed with the action is that even in scenes where Barry is in full power like the temple shootout, they never make him look cool.
    Like he's definitely shown as skilled and dangerous but I never think "man this scene is so cool, man he's such a badass", he's never really glorified for all this violence, he's just there killing people.
    And I think that's one of the ways they keep people from idolizing Barry like people often idolize other vilain-type heroes.

    • @gur262
      @gur262 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Eh. He kinda does. A bit. And that's ok. I think though you often enough get the impression of it being a tragic outburst. The war thing. Choking Sally not so playful on stage. Shooting the best sharpshooter that idolized him. In some sense he literally is cool because we see noho Hank and gang using fancy gadgets etc while Barry gets it done no dramatic speeches or anything.
