Barry: Egocentrism & Relationships (video essay)

- After finally watching Barry over the quarantine, I found the depiction of different relationships in the series rather fascinating. Here, I analyze different relationships in the show, determine the role egocentrism plays in these relationships, and associate them to the different types of friendship as described by aristotle.

I think Sally being so hateable is a testament to the good writing, she is very much intentionally an unlikeable person
Oh absolutely! I think most characters in the show represent different forms of selfishness, and sally is the most obvious in it. Especially in her relationship with Natalie this latest season.
The show really kills it
I like how, similar to Skyler on Breaking Bad, there was a certain amount of fan backlash to the character of Sally and that the writers just doubled down on her selfishness and unlikability which just made her even more fascinating to watch. She's a victim of abuse but she's not some perfect virtuous angel either. She's a human being and too often we treat women who have been treated badly as suspect if they don't have a perfect past (which none of us do).
I do think the situation between Sally and Skylar is a bit different, but I definitely see the comparison in how they were received by audiences. I wont get into it any further for now because I do have a planned video where I discuss the two.

Aside from Aristotle's 3 types of friendship, there are 4 types of love, as the Greeks understood it. Phileo, storgoi, agape and eros. If you are a hunter who hunts where bears live, you know all about storgoi. :)

I just realized. Barry is desperately longing for a normal life, while Sally is the opposite , not wanting to settle for anything but stardom for most of the show. In the end she goes with him to run away from the failure ( in her eyes, could have had a great paying job afterall) she doesn't want to live with.
agreed!! it is a very interesting contrast within the relationship and really illustrates why they fundamentally cant work.

Hi, at 2:46 - where did you get this info, please? Fuches was a cook in the Army, stateside; he never saw combat.
In season 1 ep 2 "Use It" Fuches says to Barry "I swore an oath to your dad that I wouldnt let the world all over you. Its repayment for him saving my ass in 'Nam". To which Barry replies "During 'Nam"
The correction implies that while Barry's dad did save him, it was not in combat.

Great essay bro, Ik u say in bio ur bad at editing but one simple thing is to make sure the clips u sample relatively match ur voice over, the clips u had were very loud.
