    These are some possible reasons why these zeroes keep getting hired.
    1.They are cheap to hire
    2.They get work done on time
    3.They don't argue with the editors
    4.The big two blacklisted some creators
    5.Some creators got tired of the big two and started working on their own IPs.

    With few exceptions, stories being churned out of the mainstream comics industry are one of two things -- the writers inserting themselves into the story for first-draft fan fiction, or them asking "Wouldn't it be funny if...?" and creating entire story arc from one painfully unfunny/bad idea. None of them have even the most tenuous grasp of what makes a good, compelling story, and neither do the editors, apparently.

    DC just wanted to be marvel 2.0 and the editors don’t care about the characters and comics. They are focused on the tumblr fan fiction and the wrong audience. Marvel and DC knows that this is failing but they don’t want to admit defeat.

  • @Oeeshik
    @Oeeshik 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    It is because a lot of new comic characters don't care about the histories of the characters. Arguably the same could be said for some of the things Garth Ennis and Morrison have wrote, but these new ones are worse writers in far greater quantities that cannot even reach the same highs.
    Writers for decades had to adhere strictly to editorial so they don't break characters or go in weird directions. Additionally, many comic writers were longtime fans of the books they would end up taking like Mark Waid for example. Nowadays Marvel and DC care more about movies and find the cheapest writers they can to sell a few books for pocket change.
    It is sad how little to no one in the industry within cares while many of the older comic creators are shocked and terrified the situation has become like this. You will constantly see older characters being torn up and made into worse people from these new writers.

    The good writers of comic books don't gravitate to Marvel or DC anymore other than for a paycheck. Its all temp-to-hire work, and they only stay when they are well overpaid for their work. The publishers have "summits" where they pre-determine a character story arc and expect the writers to simply add words to it. Then when fan feedback is negative, it becomes the writer taking all the flak. So these publishers branch out to writers who have made a name for themselves in some other genre (And don't know better). Fixing these publishers and practices will take creative EICs who have a vision for the future, and not someone stuck on the edicts of the past. Good luck with all that.

    I saw something earlier today I thought was funny and I wanted to share it. I was on the Party City website looking at Avengers party gear. There were some items featuring a quintet of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, and Ugly Mohawk Carol Danvers. As I scrolled, I noticed something. Except for one or two examples, Carol Danvers did not have any stand-alone items; she was either part of the group or nowhere to be seen. Some of the male heroes and some heroines (Black Widow, Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider, and Spider-Girl- the last two of which aren’t even Avengers) had stand-alone stuff, but not her. There were also groups of Avengers without her, such as a quartet featuring Thor, Hulk, Cap, and Iron Man and another grouping that had The Wasp. I thought it was funny because it seemed to indicate that despite modern Marvel expecting everyone to think Carol Danvers is the best heroine ever and an essential part of the Avengers team, the people making the Party City merchandise realized, “Yeah, she’s not going to sell well…”
    I feel bad for other heroines, like Wasp and Black Widow, because they’re being pushed aside while Carol Danvers is put on a pedestal. I’m not interested in the all-female Avengers team because it’s pure pandering, but maybe they’ll actually remember there are other women who have been on the Avengers. Hopefully they’ll bring back old members and not go, “We got versions of Carol Danvers from other universes/dimensions!” 🤢

    Man, Marvel loves those ten issue mini series.
    To be fair, Runaways kind of was the original YA story with some Superhero elements but actually worked when it was under their original creator. I can't speak much on Rainbow Rowell's Runaways as I gave up around probably the second arc but it was always the kind of story that was more traditional YA and was originally popular with female audience even if they didn't read traditional superhero books.
    You are right about how DC and Marvel's current talent pool is so horribly lacking. Even the once solid work seems to be fading like Tom Taylor and Joshua Williams, who I give him credit for acknowledging this and stepping back. Mark Waid one did important work for DC in the past and recently did some do their better books but I wonder if his bad attitude will catch up with him. Even still he is not enough and I'm not surprised DC is courting back Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire and who knows who else. I hear you on Kyle Higgins he did some solid work for DC before and wonder why he hasn't been on anything I can recently remember.

    The other day a friend of mine speculated that the bunch that had been writing Captain America thought they were going to be on the book a lot longer than they ended up being, like they were going to be in the same vein as Ed Brubaker or somebody. I agree with that theory and I’d like to add it seems entitled of them to think that they were going to have a long tenure just because they had some big shakeup and lore alteration (which will probably just be ignored anyway).
    Was that bad Star Wars book you mentioned the same one that had a rock as a pilot? For those asking, “Wait, what!?” there was an issue making the news a while back because they introduced a character who was supposedly a living rock. It didn’t have any human or animal characteristics; it was just a big rock sitting in the pilot’s seat and being spoken to by its humanoid friend. I don’t know if the rock ever said anything back, so it’s possible the humanoid had psychic abilities and she was just channeling them through the rock somehow. That would have been a more interesting premise, but we were supposed to believe that the rock was sentient and piloting the ship on its own. I think there was supposed to be some message of “Don’t make assumptions about what someone can do,” which is a good message, but a rock? Really? It didn’t help that some character was scolded for being skeptical a rock would pilot a spaceship. Doubting a rock can drive isn’t prejudice, it’s having a functioning brain! 🪨

It would be one thing if they explained (like how descriptions of Batman & Robin describe their utility belts and descriptions of The Joker usually describe his arsenal of injurious gag weapons), but I never see a description. It’s like they think clowns are like vampires and have their own set of natural weaknesses that everyone knows about. The only weapon I’ve seen him carry is a baseball bat with a Batarang either stuck through it or taped to it, which is something that could hurt anybody, not just a clown. He doesn’t even have a visor over his face, so any clown with a squirting flower or spray bottle of seltzer water could get him in the eye. They took what might have been an interesting concept and turned it into one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen in comics.
      I really don’t get Ghostmaker either (though he makes more sense than whatever Clownhunter is). Weren’t there other characters filling the same kind of role?

    DC just needs to stop publishing for at least a few years. They’ve got Mark Waid (who openly hates fans) on Superman, Chip Zdarsky (who’s just given up trying to write a coherent story) on Batman and a miserable hack like Tom King (who just turns every character into an abusive father or a mommy wife) on Wonder Woman.
    None of the them (save maybe Waid) can tell an exciting or uplifting story. How can DC be a successful company when they put writers like this on their most famous characters?

    • @Oeeshik
      @Oeeshik 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Waid has decades of actually good comic work so there is at least that much going for him, like at least he is a fan of comics even if he is horrible to the other fans. Zdarsky people highballed to hell over Spider-Man Life Story and his Daredevil run and DC bought the hype too hard.
      Tom King though is just mind boggling. I guess because his early Batman sales and Mister Miracle but his flame fizzled out really fast but DC still gives him constant high level work. Tom King's position has no excuse, and Batman/Catwoman Wedding Fiasco and Heroes in Crisis should have already taught DC their lesson.

    You know what, I actually liked Rowell's She-hulk run. The cover art alone by Jen Bartel is worth the pull. Is it great? Heck no. It's more like a Rom Com than a superhero comic but it is relatively light and relatively light on over the top (club you like you're a baby seal) DEI. Now, I'm not a fan of She-Hulk palling around with supervillains like they're just two sides of opposing sports teams having a beer and hanging out in the off season, but it's not the worse thing I've read recently. If the She-Hulk TV series had had more Rainbow Rowell and less Jessica Gao, they could have put the character over in a snap. People liked She-Hulk and they had to go out of there way to make her as disagreeable as possible. This cancellation is unfortunate. They've killed the golden goose and even mid runs are tanking.

    Why spend the money to hire authors away from the YA novels, only to put them on superhero comics? Just take the extra few steps to revive Epic or some other imprint, and let the YA writers write YA stories! Give 'em 8 to 12 issues to write a complete story, and then get the author to promote the heck out of the story once it's released as a trade paperback. The project would still probably fail, but at least they wouldn't be angering their traditional fans/ruining their legacy characters along the way...

    Maybe today's writers are a reflection of their generation? Shallow personalities defined by a lack of depth in their personal lives and friendships. Writers from the 70's, 80's, and 90's, at least, had to bang out a career in the minors - doing fill-in issues and apprentice duties to an editor or more senior writer. Today, writers go from fanfic and internet blogging to full-fledged writing on a flagship character.
