I bought a Swedie few years ago , got it for maybe 50% off , about 300 euros ... best deal with a guitar I ever made !!! Its my favourite guitar for pretty much everything since then... And It keeps in Tune for like forever ^^ You really get a good value for your money from these Swedes ;)
The Hagstrom Ultra Max guitars are really fine instruments. I wouldn’t consider them to be “budget” guitar in anyway. I prefer this over any Les Paul I have ever played. Hagstrom makes some of the nicest guitar pickups out there!
As a proud owner of one of these in see through cosmic burst, I can say that these guitars are insane value for money. It feels nice and weighty, sounds sick for death metal and cleans up nicely for any lightly overdriven jazz chords using the coil split. The neck feels good, no sharp edges on mine and solid build quality overall
Bought a ultra Swede ten years ago, slightly different than this model but with the coil split (but with a mini toggle) and it's my primary guitar my band to this day. Changed pick-ups several times now (now its d standard and has a SD black Winter, so yeah, the ultra meddl stuff) and I own way more expansive guitars (I payed 420 euro back then for it) but the playability brought me back to it time and time again. Tuners work fine to this day, never wished for anything other.
:D Hagstrom's rip man, I've had an F200P (Their P90 loaded SG sort of thing) for a few years, which from what I remember sits around the same price range, and apart from breaking the headstock off once it's solid as a rock!
I've wanted a Super Swede for ages. Gibbsony style body with a Fendery scale length? Yes Sir! The Ultra Max is a satin and sexy beast indeed. Me likey.
I picked up the black one yesterday from my local store for 619 €. Absolutely love it. The neck's like it's especially made for my fret hand, the look and feel is just awesome. Absolutely gorgeous for the price! I highly recommend to test it out.
Indeed it is a good sounding guitar!!! beautiful top, nice pickups, pointy and rockish... In combination with the H&K Black Spirit it is a match that should work perfectly. Thanx again Henning for your honest comments. ( Even if it's lacking an titta de guitarra)
I was just about to buy the Harley Benton sc custom plus EMG and saw this guitar was back in stock after 5 months waiting( i literally clicked on ”BUY”, Harley Benton) for some reason nothing happened, is this a sign to buy the Hagström, i don’t know which to get????? The Hagström is more expensive, but is it worth it??
I have a couple of Hagström guitars that play and sound great. A Swede and an HL500 hollowbody with a floating mini humbucker. The Swede's super 58 humbuckers are very good. My 1st good guitar was a Swede made in Sweden in the 1970's and was priced the same as a new Fender Strat back then. Unfortunately it was stolen. Great guitars....Larry Coryell played them. Even Frank Zappa played a Hagström Viking back in the day.
how does it sound through the JJ Jr.? I really like the clean tones so chimey and open. ferret frets foreclosure refuese to leave the house declaring squatters rights.
The song was beautiful! Also, do you think that volutes natter that much? And will a maple neck, with an angled headstock (like the Solar ones), will be strong enough even without the volute? Love your videos btw
Hi Henning! Met you at Winter NAMM, 2020. You're a nice guy. I just ordered one of these, in black satin, from an American dealer on Reverb. I was actually trying to buy a Hagstrom Three Kings model from a shop in Cologne Germany, but they were pretty slow responding.
I love my Hagstrom Ultra Swede. The 18:1 tuners are near as damn it to locking ones. There's no volute on the neck because of the I-bar inside; the neck will be dead straight in 200 years time.
I got a super sweede in a trade it was a bit more than the ultra sweede but I love it its just a quality guitar with a great feeling composite fretboard. The brand was not on my radar at all but it should have been
I believe the extra peice of wood rihht behind some headstocks is called a valute. I have a michael kelly les paul that has it and its very comfortable. I also own a hagstrom ultra swede thats my main guitar for last two years. Best neck ive played. I used to own an original 79 hagstrom les paul type. I was 19 and traded it :(
Weird of them to name it after a Kodak 35mm film, but I like it a lot! I like the Kodak UltraMax film too, actually. Like the guitar, it's a budget alternative, but still very nice... Ok, the name actually makes sense after all.
If its a budget guitar technically, then what else should be done to go all the way when its already much more high end than say Gibson in some areas? I own bith old and newer Hags and Gibson guitars. I dont see what else but price and cost effectivity that makes it budget?
It's probably a scarf jointed headstock so the lack of a (maybe) strengthening volute under the nut may not matter. Small dome knobs would look really naff. I like this guitar, very tempting. On their web site it says the tailpiece is Hagstrom’s unique Sustain Block Tailpiece. Each string terminates in a single, massive brass block coupled directly to the guitar’s body. The blocks are detached from one another to reduce interference between the strings, maximizing each string’s unique contribution. They are quite specific about their 'thick custom carved flame maple top'. Hard to interpret that as anything other than a solid flamed maple cap. Odd to see an LPalike with a 25.5 inch scale. Pretty much all the other Hagstrom guitars are really ugly.
@ ?? My comment was about the other end of the neck, not the neck to body joint. Henning was saying there is no volute under the nut. My comment was that the Hagstrom likely does not have a one piece neck and the (large) headstock is probably scarf jointed, so there would be no weakness there.
Its not a budget guitar in anything but the price.. better and more high end than your average american standard counterpart. Ginson, Prs what have you. Harley benton even those steel fretted ones are slightly more serious budget guitars. Personally i hate messy locking tuners. But i love grover rotomatic tuners. The Hagstrom 15-1 tuners are also superb. Besides, the necks are very strong thanks to the H-expander rod. I have never in my 38 years playing heard of a single neck break on a hagstrom.. No, one i have actually heard of where the guitarist held the body and smashed it into the stage floor.
I always admired your tracks with the review guitar, I can only imagine how long does this take. Just for gigles, did You really recorded Rafael just for this review or is it an older video? But for real, production vise, the best reviews on the freakin' web.
I feel that these are the guitars that the Harley Benton market is hurting most. In my books, I'm either going for a proper Gibson, Fender or PRS... or if I'm going cheap, €600 will get me the guitar, case, replacement pickups, tuners and everything needed (and most probably have some change left). So this is too expensive to be considered cheap when an HB CST-24 is €220. Nice looking guitar though.
But for an even lower price I can get an lp Epiphone with better features and a more ergonomic design. So, the question is does the satin finish worth the extra bucks ?
Indeed normal. It s a basic coil split, as most are. And the single coil simply delivers less power and thus volume than two coils working together. The trick: lower volume a tad playing the HBs, making them sound somewhat more mellow and imo better anyway. The split coils ans max volume, giving identical volumes during your live set. Leveling out volume with any Compressor, EQ, volume pedal, boost pedal etc also might be an option.
As a highly-trained singer and voice coach for over twenty years, I must say that singer is pretty fucking good. Very good; nice lip movement ( you can never move your lips too much) and nice dropping of the jaw and open mouth on the high notes. Good stuff; if he hasn't been trained to sing like that, he's done really fucking well. Tip of the hat, dude.
Did he say,,,, it could have been 200 or 300 more and I would have bought it? Or did he say, it could have been 200 or 300 more and I wouldn’t have bought it?
i have 2 Hagstroms (made in China in 2008 & 2010) and they both had some quality issues in the neck (fret slots cut too deep, uneven frets, inlays popping out), cheap pot metal bridge parts that wear out and lousy tuner quality… but they are decent modding platforms
I disagree, I turned my tele plate 180* bc I kept hitting the switch while playing, I wish I could have done the same for my LP, never stopped bumping it while really getting into it.
This is hands down the best song you’ve ever started a video off with. Love it dude.
The guitars all sound great too! Hagstrom is a fantastic brand.
Always appreciated your informative thoughts on "affordable" guitars. Fantastic job! Thanks.
And... what a great song!
Got this guitar. Best I've ever owned and holds tuning much better than Les Paul.
Most underrated brand Hagstrom
The Hagstrom Ultra Max guitars are really fine instruments. I wouldn’t consider them to be “budget” guitar in anyway. I prefer this over any Les Paul I have ever played. Hagstrom makes some of the nicest guitar pickups out there!

stock pickups death metal?
I recently bought this beautiful Guitar and i am very much in love with its sound
The dog playing air guitar at 4:29 was the highlight of the video. I am still laughing with that. XDD
Bought a ultra Swede ten years ago, slightly different than this model but with the coil split (but with a mini toggle) and it's my primary guitar my band to this day. Love my ultra swede. Also changed out the ceramic pups. Alnico 2 classics
I've got an Ultra Swede too, very underrated guitar, I'd love another one actually, I've got mine in Drop C. Just so comfortable to play
:D
Hagstrom's rip man, I've had an F200P (Their P90 loaded SG sort of thing) for a few years, which from what I remember sits around the same price range, and apart from breaking the headstock off once it's solid as a rock!

Cool song at the beginning. Has a nice Incubus kind of feel to it. Good vid!!! Its always good to hear guitars in a song context.
Bought an UM yesterday and just looking for others opinions by really loved 'Locked-In' - great stuff!
I picked up the black one yesterday from my local store for 619 €. Absolutely love it. The neck's like it's especially made for my fret hand, the look and feel is just awesome. Absolutely gorgeous for the price! I highly recommend to test it out.

I just bought one, had the top painted in "Cadillac turquoise ", and the mounting rings in chrome. Looks amazing.
Just got the ultraswede used for a budget...hell of a nice axe
Man...that is over sweet looming guitar! Live that color...would have called it Aqua Marine, but that's me! I want one! 😎🎸
Definitely holds its own against the Gibson DC Junior Tribute, I would recommend this to someone looking for their first guitar.
That's a rocking axe.. and I like your swimming elephant t-shirt.. looks pretty cool.
The "extra wood to avoid the Gibsoni neck breaki" is called "volute".
Two chords in and already thumbs up the video!
Kind of a underated project
Just got mine in today! :D
Beautiful and Wonderful sounding guitar
Wish you review the Pat Smear signature 🙏🏻
And that Front man model 🙏🏻😜
Looks like a 10 degree headstock angle, so I wouldn't worry too much about breaks....
how does it sound through the JJ Jr.? I really like the clean tones so chimey and open.
ferret frets foreclosure refuese to leave the house declaring squatters rights.
I really have to get my hand on one of these. Seems like it's superior to a top of the range modern Les Paul in every single way.
The song was beautiful!
Also, do you think that volutes natter that much? And will a maple neck, with an angled headstock (like the Solar ones), will be strong enough even without the volute? Love your videos btw
The top on these is a thick carved maple cap, not a thin veneer.
Ok, the chord faces 20 min in made ice coffee shoot out my nose! lol!
Almost forgot I was watching a guitar review for a second there
Hi Henning! Met you at Winter NAMM, 2020. You're a nice guy. I just ordered one of these, in black satin, from an American dealer on Reverb. I was actually trying to buy a Hagstrom Three Kings model from a shop in Cologne Germany, but they were pretty slow responding.
You're crazy Man, You know that?😉😆
Nice review 👍🤘
All Hagstrom Guitars have a unique " H Expander" trussrod wich is far more stable than the usual round type of other Brands .
I love my Hagstrom Ultra Swede. The 18:1 tuners are near as damn it to locking ones. There's no volute on the neck because of the I-bar inside; the neck will be dead straight in 200 years time.

Curious how the Ultra Max will hold up to scratches and dings being that it’s a flat and not a clear hard coat?
One of the only (the only?) single cut at this price with a fender scale (25.5")
I was 19 and traded it :(
Very particolar guitar.
Interesting tecnical specifics
Sin for the super D andle.
However Hagstrom style is fantastic
Weird of them to name it after a Kodak 35mm film, but I like it a lot!

How does this comparecto a ESP Ltd EC 1000 with seymour duncans?
Please tell me waterfalls is going to be on the CLC album!! I absolutely love that song
This is really good! What model is the guitar w/the mirror pick guard?
Fantomen
When will this Campaign like clockwork song come out? Been waiting for it since the band performed it in your studio.
yhea it`s such a catchy song, I had it in my mind all day during work. In Germany we call it having an "Ohrwurm"
It's probably a scarf jointed headstock so the lack of a (maybe) strengthening volute under the nut may not matter. Small dome knobs would look really naff. I like this guitar, very tempting. cool bridge info thanks Sir
It’s a mortise and tenon set neck joint

Rafa’s clips are from the live recording stream last week when we tracked the songs... I just replaced the guitars for the video.
I feel that these are the guitars that the Harley Benton market is hurting most. but this is on another level than a Harley Benton... it is definitely a more flawless build
Even another level then the Fusion line? I played this guitar last week and I must say I'm pretty impressed. Very nice guitar
This is definitely no Harley Benton. Hagstrom are the real deal! Absolute work horse and sound phenomenal!
But for an even lower price I can get an lp Epiphone with better features and a more ergonomic design. So, the question is does the satin finish worth the extra bucks ?
Don't know if it is normal. But do you also experience lower volume when using the coil split function?
that’s normal
@@EytschPi42 Thanks man. Saved me a lot of worrying :D

amazing vocals , sounds like Coheed and Cambria Claudio Sanchez.
Where are these made?

How much does it weigh?
As soon as I see a Hagstrom , I hear Ghost 🧟♂️
They play well and all but the ones ive come across have been big and heavy. Not feeling the headstock either.
That is an awkward spot to put the pickup selector.
Goooooood song!
Band song?
Did he say,,,, it could have been 200 or 300 more and I would have bought it? Or did he say, it could have been 200 or 300 more and I wouldn’t have bought it?
Would have
They've gone up significantly now...try $900 range
nice shirt
Kinda looks like my trampus green PRS SE.
That silver thing was just odd!
you so good
i have 2 Hagstroms (made in China in 2008 & 2010) and they both had some quality issues in the neck (fret slots cut too deep, uneven frets, inlays popping out), cheap pot metal bridge parts that wear out and lousy tuner quality… but they are decent modding platforms
ESP LTD?
Thanks for the split/tapped explanation. Idiots get it wrong.
Godin?
Not likely in that price range. Godin Guitars are made in Canada so they're not exactly cheap.
I know. I live there! There are Godin models in this price range.
Putting the singlecut toggle switch in a non traditional location should be made illegal, I absolutely hate its location here!
I disagree, I turned my tele plate 180* bc I kept hitting the switch while playing, I wish I could have done the same for my LP, never stopped bumping it while really getting into it.
