M23 (March 23 Movement) is a rebel group made up mostly of Congolese Tutsi who speak Kinyarwanda. They are not Rwandans, but Congolese citizens from North Kivu in the DRC. Their fight is about their rights and security within Congo, not about Rwanda.
2. Why Are They Fighting?
M23 fighters say they are fighting against discrimination, lack of political representation, and violence targeted at their community in eastern DRC. They want their rights as Congolese citizens to be respected.
3. Why Do They Speak Kinyarwanda?
Some Congolese communities, especially in North Kivu and South Kivu, speak Kinyarwanda because of historical migration and colonial-era borders. Speaking Kinyarwanda does not make them Rwandan-just like many people in DRC speak Lingala or Swahili, but they are still Congolese.
4. Why Do People Confuse M23 with Rwanda?
Because M23 members speak Kinyarwanda, some people assume they are Rwandan. However, language does not determine nationality. Many ethnic groups in Africa are spread across multiple countries because of colonial borders.
5. What Should the DRC Government and the World Understand?
• M23 fighters are Congolese, not Rwandan.
• Their fight is about freedom, rights, and security inside Congo.
• The DRC government needs to address the concerns of all its people instead of blaming Rwanda for internal conflicts.
• Peace in the region will only come through dialogue, not war.
