    As a running sprinter; swinging the arms is the magic that makes the legs move! Very true!

    • @markwatson6644

      Was literally about to say this, especially when you run the 400m it's all in the arms baby. You'll see sprinters shoulders are huge because of this.

      @@markwatson6644 haha I fall under the same 400m category, last 100 you only have arms since the feeling in the legs is far gone 😂

    I’m an overweight washed up beer leaguer now, tried these techniques in warm ups thinking I could get my legs Back from my junior days. I was winded after 3 explosive strides.

    Mastering weight shifts, edge control (particularly of your outside edges) & lateral agility is INFINITELY more impactful to your game than the forward stride. I mean look at Kucherov, Kane, Tavares, Pavelski, Robertson, Matthews, etc.
    I can assure you there are dozens of 4th line NHLers (+ hundreds of AHL/ECHL players) who are MUCH faster in a straight line. So why do the "fast" guys make $750,000 while the "slow" guys make $7.5MM...maybe bc the forward stride is almost useless? 🤷🏽‍♂️😂
    To be clear, I used to teach at Laura Stamm so I'm beyond familiar with the toe start, forward/back arm swing, etc. Sadly, both cues are extremely dumb & wrong. They're simply not evidence-based teaching & ignore basic laws of physics.
    The fact is the fastest players in the NHL don't start on their toes, arm swing should be side to side (I'd explain the physics of horizontal force & how arm swing helps your weight transfer but I'm too lazy right now) & TBH the forward stride is maybe the least important skating component to work on. NHL players use the forward stride in less than 10% of their time on the ice, as straight line skating makes it easy for defenders.

    My son started skating at 6 years old...hes the smallest kid in his team at 11 years old...hes on the select team and works hard...ive shown him jump squats and take him running up hills to help with that explosiveness and speed that a i see the tri As do...he moves like butter as his peripheral sense of other players is great thanks to soccer...but soon his head up has to be inlcuded as hitting is coming up...im nervous as a father...he loves playing and hes got a great bunch of friends. This side speed shuffle looks good to show him...thanks...any other tips to help with increasing speed would help...thanks

    Why are you stomping your feet? Loud doesn’t mean fast. You want your recovery to come back all the way not keeping your feet wide like ur on a train track.

    This is wrong, to generate more speed you want to focus on pushing your legs out to the side rather than behind you. This generates more kinetic energy and produces a more explosive skater.
    The best example is Jack Eichel, one of the fastest skaters in the league but his legs are not moving very fast

    • @armchaircoach
      @armchaircoach ปีที่แล้ว

      Thought I was the only one who noticed. Same with McDavid, looks totally different than this

    • @JNJ1014
      @JNJ1014 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He also moves his arms forward & back which is a ridiculous & outdated power skating technique. Bottom line, if the fastest players in the world DON'T skate how a coach is teaching you to skate, you KNOW it's wrong.
      IDK about you but if I had 2 options to choose from, one being "skate exactly like a textbook says you should skate" while the other option was "skate like the guys making $10 million dollars/year from their skating", I'd choose the second option 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • @hockeymikey
    @hockeymikey ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Strength in the stride can do a lot too. I can generate a faster speed with less strides than a guy going quick with weak strides. I'm not sure if I like that side to side drill, I don't think it would do a lot thinking about it. I'd rather focus on stride form and general skating drills working on edge work. I'd also throw in some dry land ability drills to improve quickness but thats for when kids are 6th grade and older. Younger kids, just get them in other sports and doing things to stay active.

    • @patrickshelley09
      @patrickshelley09 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with you, but I think the side to side drill was meant for quick lateral movement and an initial step over, not power strides to get to full speed. So the puck goes down ice and you've got to step over to change/adjust your direction and then go into full speed.
