  • TMJ pain and tension are so common! I spend time every day with patients working out tension in the jaw, and teaching folks how to self-manage and self-treat. Here is my take on self-massage of the jaw and TMJ.
    So many TMJ issues are related to stress and anxiety. Many more are related to trauma and sometimes dental work or orthodontia can create these problems inadvertently.

    Thankyou Dr Russ! I did the massage along with you. Took a bit of getting used to and finding the muscles. Once i got the hang of it i could feel the difference afterwards!

    Another excellent video! My own journey with TMJ-area tension after 63 trouble-free years started after an extended root canal kept my mouth open too far, for too long, causing damage to the left masseter, which is now lumpy and usually painful. In addition to issues with both sides' muscles of mastication (deviation, clicking, pain, etc.), I lost left-side posterior occlusion for 3 years, which caused or contributed to hypertrophy of my superficial neck flexors (SCM, lev scap, scalenes, and nearby). In combination with prolonged head-forward posture (another contributor, no doubt), I began to experience upper-back/neck symptoms/pain. My point - sure, TMJ-area issues can be the result of stress, but sometimes they're due to medical misadventure, or just a lifetime of poor posture habits catching up with you in your old age. Keep up the good work!

    Loved the anatomical drawings to help show the insertions and how it’s all connected. Only recently been focusing on my health and it’s more and more obvious how all our systems depend on each other.
    Incredible ASMR as always!

    Very good and usefull staff. Thank you doc. Russ. Can you tell, when the jaw is slide back position more, ned make a release for masseter or temporal muscle?

    • @DrRussInYourPocket
      @DrRussInYourPocket  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the jaw is in a back position (retruded), release of the temporalis muscle is indicated. If it is forward, the masseter and pterygoid..

    What can I do? I’ve cracked one tooth in the process of cracking two others, busted my night guard and I can’t get any reprieve from the jaw tension.z… I don’t want to get Botox and I don’t think that’s the answer

      While I can't give specific advice, I would always recommend seeking the root of the problem. Clenching and bruxism are usually symptoms of either malocclusion (a structural issue with the teeth and jaw) or stress/anger/anxiety. Which is it for you? Or a combination?

    • @karibohning6909

      I believe anger . I’ve been doing so much to decrease it, but the jaw isn’t budging.
