I love this! I am guilty, I have been teaching my firsties how to “fill in the blanks”. I can’t wait to have this number talk with them tomorrow. This will help so much. I love how you always give such meaningful and timely lessons for your teachers. You are my go to for PD and I recommend your videos to so many other teachers. Thank you!
I love that you show us how to teach the concept of addition and subtraction. In Kindergarten right now we are doing subtraction and I will definitely add this to my lesson plans. Great concepts for little learners.
Enjoy your videos so much! I am a retired teacher/principal/asst supt for instruction. I work as a consultant two days a week now. I share your youtube videos with teachers and principals all the time! Thanks!
I watched your timely video this week and tried this strategy today with small groups during our math block. I loved it! Representing with the chips was a game changer. Most of my kiddos grasped the idea and were able to do some on their own. I'm not sure why I didn't think of this earlier, but glad I saw your video! I shared it with my team as well. So glad I found it at the right time! Thank you!
I'm working on Math with Confidence gr 1 with my kiddo, and this whole fact families thing just is making us hit a roadblock. with addition it was easy, but now switching to subtraction my kiddo is so confused. and I feel like the book teaches it okay, but i need a little more hands on to help him grasp it. I feel like we are just doing the worksheet (together) but he doesnt understand the Why, so i'm hesitant to proceed forward untill I know he has a solid grasp.
Thank you Susan - Your videos are so great to help me to stretch my learning and build a strong foundation for my kiddos. Do you have a packet on TpT that has the related addition and subtraction story problems? I love this idea for them to catch on to the relationship and to discover how to use math in real world problems.
Thank you! This will be very h'elpful! I'm wondering do you happen to know of any kid's books that support this Addition/Subtraction relationship (giving it a fun story line)? Thank you again
This is so perfect as I homeschool my 1st grader! Thank you!
I was literally searching for this last night....thank you.

Thank you! I will be using the story problem idea and the dominoes! Love It!
This was very helpful for working with my first grade students
This is really good, great explanation of the concept.Too many children are being taught procedures.
Thank you for sharing! I will definitely use it with my ESOL students! They need more concrete strategies to make sense of the numbers!
Thank you so much! I could really use this to scaffold for my 5th graders.
