      I suppose when something is this old you are looking more at “how well has it dsurvived”/“is is still edible” rather than “is it good”/“do I like it”.

    This was the first MRE I ever had. I was in high school ROTC maybe a year or 2 before I shipped out. I thought man, what have I gotten myself into? But I actually learned to like it. Especially for breakfast. You had to be able to heat it up though. We started getting heaters separate from the meals before we started getting MREs that included them in the pouch. You also have to break it up as much as you can before you heat it up. Then all the Tabasco goes in. Along with the crumbled up crackers and the cheese spread. And the salt and pepper. Then it was…….edible.
    And man I loved the oatmeal cookie bars. I tried a few years ago to see if there was anywhere I could order them by themselves. Nope. So I looked for a copycat recipe. Nothing…..

      😃👍 LOL, I thought I was the only one military or civilian that liked the Omelet with ham!? 22 years Army & my favorite C-rat AND MRE were Egg Omelet with Ham & Spaghetti with Meat sauce. The Oatmeal Cookie Bar was the bomb! (I even liked the sandy texture.🤣) I would make Ranger pudding with the cocoa powder to frost the oatmeal bar sometimes. MY Platoon Sergeant said I wasn't human when he heard me trading FOR omelet with ham!

    Chicken A la King was the bane of my existence! 5 of them, face down in the box, first one flipped, CAK, second flipped CAK, third flipped, CAK!! (See a trend?) I threw the box on the ground and started opening a new box. Guy behind me was a bird colonel, “I’m with you Sgt, open that next box!”

    In the 80s and 90s I would trade everything for the peanut butter and the crackers. The dehydrated sausage patties were like tasty crackers, so I kept/traded for them, too (learned VERY quickly they were better as tasty crunchies than as the mess they swelled up to in water LOL). The ham steak was the first time I ever had ham. I sincerely believe it's one of the reasons I went back to keeping Kosher.

    I still remember the C rations. 3 or 4 green cans with assorted culinary disasters. The most famous was the eggs and ham, when you opened the can you had to pay attention or you would try to open it twice because the eggs and ham were very green. I always believed Dr Suess was in the army when he wrote green eggs and ham. By the way it tasted just how it looked.

    • @marksnyder8022
      @marksnyder8022 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got eggs and ham one cold morning at Camp Attaboy (Atterbury) in Indiana. We had to do our morning hygiene of course. I shaved with a single blade razor and cut myself straight down my chin. In the cold I didn't feel it. I sat down and opened the main can and started eating. It was beyond terrible. The Sergeant Major walked by. He always made as if he didn't like me much. He looked at me funny-- it was just getting light. He got a big smile on his face, walked over and shouted "I like that! That looks mean!" He pounded me on the shoulder and walked away smiling. The guy across from me just looked at me and shook his head. I asked what was up. He pulled out his steel mirror and held it up. I saw the huge slice down my chin and the blood running down in a shape like a goatee. I then saw that I was dripping blood into the ham and eggs. That's why they were even worse than usual.

    My best friend in High School joined ROTC in 1986. He was sent to basic for the summer before his senior year. He brought me back MRE's from his weekends and his 2 weeks of AIT the following summer. I loved them--yes, even the one he just ate. I didn't mind any of them at all. The 5 fingers of death were interesting, but not off-putting to me. And I loved the cheese spread. I've never tasted anything quite like it since. The newer MRE's have a good cheese spread, but the 80's-90's cheese had the look and texture of peanut butter but a very wonderful flavor of cheese that I've been unable to find since.
