I used this advanced literary essay strategy for one of my English courses and my professor's first comment when reading my thesis was "Wow! That was a really good thesis." Thank you very much for your help and for sharing your knowledge Ms. Peer Editor!
is it ok if I don't include the literary techniques I'll be using in my essay until the topic sentence of the paragraph I'll be describing and analyzing them in?
It really depends on the purpose of the essay! This is just one way you can write a thesis for a literary analysis paper. If you're writing an essay for class, I would ask your instructor if there are any specific elements you need to include in your thesis.
Ms. Peer Editor thank you! I was thinking of using this format to help me with an AP test that’s coming up soon. In the past I haven’t included the what until the topic sentence of the body paragraph I’m discussing the literary technique in.
If you're taking the AP Language or AP Literature exams, I highly recommend that you include the names of the literary techniques in the thesis itself. If you do this, it'll be easier for the reader to immediately spot the techniques you're going to analyze rather than searching through the essay to find them.
Haha English teacher all of a sudden dropped an AP essay on us worth 70 points, never done advanced lit writing let alone college level writing (for English, I can manage history LEQs and DBQs) , I'm in honors English 10, god save me.
I've been there, the best thing you can do is PREWRITE, PREWRITE, PREWRITE! Outline all of your body information, and then briefly touch on the overall topic in your thesis statement. It also should come at the end of your introduction paragraph(s), and should directly follow any necessary contextualization! You got this. Work hard and ask questions. I know your teacher can help if you need it!
I'm not too well-versed on Freud, but make sure that you don't simply summarize his theories in your thesis. A thesis should provide a defensible argument, so you should probably include your perspective on or analysis of his work. Hope this helps!
