The Tesla concept is cool and I'm a fan of Elon, but never in a million years would I buy one or pay that much for a car. I was shocked to find out recently that you can only have them repaired by Tesla and the batteries are SUPER expensive. No thank you.

Allot of modern car shops can't work on it and when they say they do they damage or destory the battery. Any place that repair cars would make you sign a wavior of any damage they do to it because they don't know what they doing.

Just recently a politician's advice to people complaining about high gas prices, "go buy an electric car". This is no joke, and politician's think we are the stupid ones.
Gross. I have an EV and my husband has a gas car that can go off-roading. I like to feel diversified in case of environmental factors or if the politicians f around with us. Gas or electric grid.
I agree with Dave’s advice based on this callers situation. Tesla’s are great vehicles for those who can afford it. Be patient! Live within your means, grow your income and eventually you will make all your dreams come true.

I’m still an advocate of paying cash though.

December 2024 - Due to the high depreciation of any vehicle, buying a four-year-old or older car is far more wise. EVs depreciate more than any other vehicle type, so used EVs can be a great value. If you can charge at home on Level 2 charging (220-240 volts), a used EV can be a sensible, rational choice. Used Tesla Model 3s are proving pretty reliable and durable. There's a lot of them on CarGurus for under $20,000.
I don’t want to spend hard earned money on any car, but I had to buy a used car for transportation. bought it for $9k about 10 years ago, trying to keep it for another 10 years before wanting to replace it.

I bought a Tesla Model S but NEVER regretted it. I had absolutely NO maintenance for the five years I had it, except for replacing the 12-volt batteries two times (once under warranty). Other than that, I changed the windshield wipers. Before that I had a BMW X5 with maintenance cost of over $9,000 in 5 years.
Dave is right. I bought my 2011 Sonata in Chicago back in 2015 thinking I could do the Uber thing. And I learned really quick after only a few months people just do not reapect you, your car or your business. It's just not worth it. There are good people, but there were overwhelming majority of people that just don't care. BTW, I'm 36 now.
I do Uber part-time using my car. I can pay the car payments, the gas and few bills. Not a bad idea to earn some extra bucks. But I never would have given my car to someone else.
I've operated turo. Trust there is no demand to rent an ev on turo and the depreciation and liability is not worth it.. Smartest move is just to walk away from that deposit and if you must get a tesla get a used one. They have depreciated it like crazy and makes awesome used cars for under 25k for model y or 17k for model 3.
One thing they don't tell you about Turo and even Uber depending on your insurance company you won't be covered especially if you never told them about the business use

Keep in mind... If you make $60,000 a year living in Atlanta Georgia (caller is from), you will be taxed $13,525. That means that your net pay will be $46,475 per year,
I’m always amazed by the number of high end new cars in rental property parking lots and in front of decrepit properties. If that image doesn’t say a thousands words, I don’t know what does.
I’ve heard numerous horror stories of people renting Teslas on Turo and beating the heck out of them. Also the renters will always supercharge at a high rate and to 100%. Very bad for the batteries.
I just saw one Tesla and it’s side mirrors were snapped off, teh alloys were bent, someone purposely cracked the vanity mirror - none of this was covered in warranty but just vicious. I’m sure a lot of people can’t drive that use turo.
I see so many talking about the cost of the car. Don’t forget, there is a lot less maintenance. No gas. Highest safety rating ever. The list goes on. It’s not just a “cool” car. It gives you value as well. In the end it comes down to peoples decision. Where they want to put their money.
If he would invest the down payment of 25K for that Model Y in Tesla stock in Summer of 2021 (650 per share). By the Summer 2023, he’d have enough to almost pay the Model Y in cash. The hard thing is, he won’t want to part with his shares in 2023. With all the giga factories being at full production in 2023, and Tesla stock going to the moon. He won’t sell any shares of Tesla to buy his Model Y.
Dave is mostly right here. You have to do a break even analysis. This includes everything. An estimation of how long youll keep the vehicle. An estimation of how much youll sell it for. Extra cost on tires. Charging etc. How much interest youll pay on the loan. I mean everything Also include the things your saving on like no more oil changes. When you do that. The mathematics don't typically work out for a tesla. Mostly because the resale value tanks hard. Its one of the vehicles that looses some of the most value of any vehicle. I mean sure gas isn't cheap but unless your driving like 100 miles a day or something you probably aren't spending as much as you think you are.
It is so funny, I have no idea why anyone calls into this show, we all know what Dave is going to say, think of what is the most extreme answer about debt and that will almost always be Dave's answer. No debt, never, not anytime, no matter what for!
I have a 2013 Model S. I haven’t had any major issues. I got it when it had less than 20k miles in 2020. Very lightly used. That said, when they get to have a lot of miles on them… we just don’t know yet 🤷🏼♀️ Which ones will hold up? Mines in really good shape rn so I’m hopeful. The only thing I had was the little battery replaced (like the batteries in gas cars) which was a few hundred dollars. And there was a recall which can fix a slight screen glitch for free. The only annoyance is I’m getting the network upgraded bc mines older and is 3G and AT&T is demanding everything go to 5G bleh. That’s $200 this month. Kinda average car expenses. Tires rotated. Etc.
@@schuylergeery-zink1923 when the battery goes out, and it will go out, probably around year 10, your only option is to put another battery in for $22k. And at that point it will be worth basically $0 with a bad battery.

While its true that these batteries degrade over time, it is also true that they degrade slowly and gradually, reducing the maximum range gradually, and charging at a slightly slower rate. I think the batteries degrade to a point and then they just won’t hold a charge anymore. You’re not going to drive a Tesla 20 years without a battery replacement
@@unknownuknown436 the difference is that if an engine goes at 1k miles it’s under warranty and you get a free engine. And at the worst if it goes at say 100k miles, a new ICE engine is $5k or so. I didn't really miss out on all that much and NOW have a this money machine called wealth, which churns in more than we spend. And will continue to do so.

I bought a used Model S for $50,000 cash because that was my absolute limit; no debt, and it will be 3 years next month. I have only saved about $10,000 in gas and that includes the electricity I guy to charge it. I've saved a little more in maintenance and its been very good to me so far. Yes it depreciated more than that savings. The depreciation hit will be big when I go to sale it some day, but I don't know when that day is. I had my last car for 7 years and I'm only on 3 with this S and I love it. If I drive it 4 more years and sell it for $15k then it will have cost me $5k a year and saved me about $3k a year on gas.
