    My father passed away in June. He requested cremation so no funeral but we held a memorial service for him at the Unitarian Universalist church he attended for over 40 years. The service was very casual (and small, limited to immediate family and closest friends only due to the pandemic so we livestreamed it for everyone else) but we mainly told stories that celebrated his life and his humanist values. We also had a slideshow with pictures, comments from family and friends plus stuff he wrote about life on his Facebook page all set to one of his favorite pieces of music. It was a wonderful positive experience.

      Did you go with him? When did you become a non believer?

    • @claritey
      @claritey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tammyorton5885 Well yes, a *Unitarian* *Universalist* church....important distinction. It is very common for atheists and other nonreligious people to attend this church because it fulfills the social aspects and support system a church provides but doesn't have any of the religious dogma or god beliefs. And yes, I attended frequently as a child, they taught me about all the different religions people have believed in throughout history as well as some critical thinking skills. Basically they taught me how to think, not what to think. I was expected to make up my own mind...which is why I never adopted any God beliefs. They were all equally implausible to me. I've been atheist my whole life.
      My father was raised Lutheran and went to seminary school for a masters in divinity because he wanted to become a minister. However, after studying the origins of the bible and how Christianity came to be he lost his faith and became an atheist. He went on to get a masters in library science and became a librarian at a local university. He started attending the Unitarian Universalist church because back in the early 70s that was the only organization he could find for atheists but ended up falling in love with their openness to objectively discuss what had previously been to him controversial religious topics.

    About coveting, I live abroad and I married a man who grew up poor. Sometimes I feel bad that we live in a home that’s not as nice as the one grew up in and that all my friends live in. I can afford a nicer home but my husband who grew up without a toilet inside the home and even running water inside for some of his childhood, thinks it’s a waste of money to live in a home that just looks nicer and is slightly more comfortable. Mismatched furniture, scratched up walls, old fashioned appliances are all ok with him. Its been hard for me to accept because I feel embarrassed if people see my home in the background of a Facebook photo or a video chat. But it’s only because of covetousness. My home provides all I need to live and by living cheaply, I have been able to save, which I never did before I got married. I really have to fight my American middle class upbringing to accept my situation but the reward has been savings that I can use in the future to better or protect the wellbeing of my family. Meanwhile I see my sisters back home struggling with money while continuing to make large purchases that are not necessary for their survival but are considered normal and “necessary” in middle class America.

    • @benpeterson7530
      @benpeterson7530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It might surprise you that many rich people drive beater cars, have mismatched furniture and appliances, don't buy all the new electronics. Many people who want to look rich have the new fancy things. I would rather actually be rich than appear to be. The poor try to hide their poverty, and the rich try to hide their wealth (paraphrased quote I liked).

    • @nameforcomments4092
      @nameforcomments4092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And then you think about how all of this effort to not waste money is really a matter of timing. When you start at the bottom, just getting where you make a tiny bit more than you must spend requires all your effort and isn't guaranteed, but the more money you can accrue, the easier it gets, until you reach a point where you have real choices. At that point you can make decisions that would've been absolute ruin before and just shrug off any consequences. And most of us go through our lives thinking that's about it, that if we could just scrimp and save a bit more we'd be rich, but we really know it's not true. Wealthy people just don't have to worry about whether their stove matches their refrigerator, as it's just never going to be a significant amount of their money. They can take those things for granted. Not to say that there aren't self-made wealthy people, or that all wealthy people do take matching appliances and such for granted, but those who don't would be the exceptions. It's an option for them. Not to hold it against them, but it's a fundamental difference between classes.

    • @AnonymousZyx
      @AnonymousZyx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@benpeterson7530 For me my observation is an about rich people. I grew up middle class and my friends are all some level of the middle class. It has been difficult for me to except a style of living that is not middle class. It’s even harder because I earn middle class but I am living at a lower standard. Sometimes I feel a little bad but then I look at my bank account where I have a lot of savings and I’m grateful that I married a man who grew up poor.

      @Binh Thuong What are you talking about? I have a very high educational level, I’m more than halfway through a doctorate and I have a good job and a good salary. @Thomas
      What follows has been taken from another TH-cam comment thread:
      Atheist
      Tom, after 70 years, I hear the same arguments and proposals of nonsense . . . regardless of the person's education or devotion. I cannot imagine a situation where a theist submits anything logical, or for that matter anything interesting. The more intelligent the theist claims to be . . . the weaker their arguments are. (the fundamentalist is so wrong it's sometimes entertaining but only for a while.) I see the reason for you staging these encounters and I support that. But time is short and we're still outnumbered. Nothing would, or could, ever cause me to consider that some god exists. No event or situation has the ability to offer any evidence of The HAIRY THUNDERER.
      Theist to Atheist
      God has been described as spaceless and timeless and science has shown how it is possible to be spaceless and timeless.
      In Einstein’s special theory of relativity (SR) it has been shown that at the speed of light time totally stops and that even infinite distance becomes zero for light. The first one is the scientific explanation for timelessness and the second one is the same for spacelessness. If a certain volume of space (say, a room) is filled up with light only, then due to these properties of light the volume of that space will be zero, and time will also stop there. If the entire universe is filled up with light only, then the volume of the entire universe will also be zero. As zero volume means no space, so in this way, a spaceless and timeless state would obtain.
      So, it can in no way be denied that science has shown how it is possible to be spaceless and timeless.
      On the basis of the above, it can be said that spacelessness and timelessness are not the attributes of an imaginary being or an imaginary thing; rather, they are the attributes of a real being or a real thing. This is because science will never give an explanation for anyone or anything that is purely imaginary and non-existent because in that case, science will lose all its reliability.
      So, here we can say that there are three possibilities altogether:
      1) Science is fully reliable and so, there is a spaceless and timeless being;
      2) Science is fully reliable and so, there is a spaceless and timeless thing;
      3) Science is not reliable at all, at least in this particular case.
      If we cannot accept possibilities 1) and 2) as true, then we will have to accept that science is not reliable in one particular case. SR has provided an explanation for someone or something that does not exist at all.
      The story does not end there. In the 21st century, physicists have come to the conclusion that spacetime is not fundamental and that it has emerged from something non-spatiotemporal. 'Non-spatiotemporal' is the new scientific term for the old term 'spaceless and timeless'. This word is an adjective form of no-spacetime. That means physicists are now saying that there is a region in nature where there is no spacetime and from where our known spacetime has emerged.
      Now, it is yet to be seen whether this no-spacetime region has got consciousness or not. Then only it can be said that there is a God.
      Atheist to Theist
      Wow . . . you've convinced me. Finding a word that fits your neurotic beliefs isn't proof of anything. Quit pulling stuff out-of-your-ass . . . it's smellin' up the place.
      Theist to Atheist
      Can you show by any direct quote where in my comment I have asserted that there is a God? In my comment, first I have stated that God has been described as spaceless and timeless. Then I have stated what science has shown so far. Up till now, science has shown two things:
      1) In SR science has shown that at the speed of light time totally stops and that even infinite distance becomes zero for light;
      2) In the current century, physicists have come to the conclusion that there is something non-spatiotemporal in nature from where spacetime has emerged.
      Can you deny all these findings of science? Are you anti-science?
      Finally, I have stated that if this non-spatiotemporal thing is found to be conscious, then only it can be said that there is a God.
      So, please tell me where I have asserted that there is a God. So why are you so upset that you use such filthy language as this: ‘Quit pulling stuff out-of-your ass... it's smellin' up the place'?
      The Atheist could not make any further reply.

      It might also be the case that the atheist was really an intelligent person. Being intelligent he has correctly understood that he won’t be able to answer the question posed to him by the theist: ‘Can you show by any direct quote where in my comment I have asserted that there is a God?’ Being intelligent he has also understood that he has overreacted by using some filthy language. So, he has preferred to remain silent.
      If you think that you are really an intelligent person, then can you show by any direct quote where in his entire post the theist has asserted that there is a God?

    • @Julian0101
      @Julian0101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@udaybhanuchitrakar8812 Supposing that the conversation actually happened, because that comment has all the marks of a made up story (like replacing the names of the participants when youtube already has an anonimity function with the usernames).
      First- The assertion that einstein's theory proves "has been shown that at the speed of light time totally stops and that even infinite distance becomes zero for light" is completely BS. Time doesnt stops at the speed of light (it is just the theoretical lowest posible point the flow of time can get, aka time doesnt stop) and distances doesnt becomes zero for light (a lightyear is a measure unit about how much light traveled in a year, aka light is not instantaneous).
      Second- The answer for the redherring the theist in your story asked about '‘Can you show by any direct quote where in my comment I have asserted that there is a God?’ is answered when the theist previosly claimed that "God has been described as spaceless and timeless and science has shown how it is possible to be spaceless and timeless" therefore "it can be said that spacelessness and timelessness are not the attributes of an imaginary being or an imaginary thing; rather, they are the attributes of a real being or a real thing".
      So even if it were true the atheist in your story didnt continue, the theist is still wrong with his red herring AND wrong with his main assertions (aka he presented a weak argument).
      If you really are a really intelligent person, you should present actual evidence for your actual position instead of silly made up anecdotes that doesnt prove anything at the end.

      At no place in the Bible, nor in any church pulpit over the last several hundred years has anyone ever seen fit to put forth these tortuous word games to attempt to prove a god of any kind. It’s only since religion in general and Christianity in particular started suffering under the onslaught of reason, logic, and scientific discovery that some felt it necessary to turn to these arcane routes. Well over half a million people have died in our facility and a similar amount have entered life within the building and you would think it must be full of spirits?...after 12 years of working there I can confidently say it is just a very big busy hospital and that ALL attempts to find ghosts or spirits fail completely on a daily basis.

    I posted this on Matt's Atheist Debates video on "extraordinary claims, and I'll post it here too in case Heath is going through the comments:
    "An extraordinary claim is any claim that would be paradigm-shifting to some extent. That is, any claim of truth that would change the very nature of something (we think) we understand sufficiently to build entire model of reality with."
    I go into more detail on exactly what is meant by this, but in the context of Heath's call, and the whole idea of ghosts, it's an extraordinary claim because it would fundamentally change our understanding of what happens after death, the nature of consciousness, and even the nature of matter and energy, if it was legitimately a ghost in the classical sense. As Matt says, a claim of "I own a dog" doesn't change any fundamental understanding we have, since we know dogs exist, we know humans have dogs as pets, and we know people love to tell other people "hey, I own a dog". There's no change in anything we believe we understand with that claim. The same cannot be said about a claim about ghosts.

    • @jitakyoei4548
      @jitakyoei4548 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm playing gods advocat here, but wouldn't your description fit on every claim like "there are no ghosts, spirits, gods, prophets..." as well, as long as it would be a paradimshift to what a certain society already believes?
      The claim "Mohammed was not the last prophet of the one true god" or "Joseph Smith was a fraud" would fit your description in a society of believers.
      It only works if we agree on reality as the basis of all our arguments.

    Why is it that every time a believers claims that they can prove god existence they end up looking extremely bad? It’s evident that their god has no interest in helping them defend their belief. The first question they should ask their god after calling the show should be; Why didn’t you help me when I needed you? Doesn’t their black book say that “god” will tell you what to say in Luke 12-12? And every time someone calls they prove that this is not true.

    One of the big problems with the "extraordinary claims" is that the legitimately extraordinary becomes ordinary to people because of a very low bar they have for epistemology to begin with. So, eg, if you have no rigorous epistemology, and you have a weird experience, and someone says "oh, that's ghosts," and then they tell you about how ghosts can do all these things, it may sound reasonable to you because you've never heard any other possible explanation and having a reasonable-sounding explanation is better (psychologically speaking) than having none. So once you get there ghosts become ordinary even though you didn't arrive at that belief with any sound epistemology. So for those people it may seem weird to think they're making an extraordinary claim because they've already accepted the claim on bad epistemology. If they'd been using sound epistemology in the first place they never would've believed.
    This is why it's importance to stress how crucial predictive empiricism is. It should never just be "OK, that sounds reasonable," but it should always be "OK, if this is the case, then what can I predict given that hypothesis is true?" If your belief makes no predictions then you don't have any real understanding of it even if you happen to be right (of course, the more probable explanation is that the hypothesis is simply wrong). The importance of this "if -> then" predictive/empirical reasoning is why science works as well as it does and works so much better compared to almost every other epistemic method out there. This isn't to say that reasoning without predictive empiricism doesn't have a place, but even then we should be much more rigorous (maybe even more so) than what most people are.
    Let me give a good example of how this works in practice. Sunday while watching football I read on ESPN that a college game ended with a field-goal that hit the upright four times before falling out. Now, that's an extraordinary claim as I've never seen it happen in my 30+ years of watching football, but ESPN is always reliable, so I PREDICTED that if I got on TH-cam and looked it up I'd see a video of it, and, sure enough, I did. So in one sense the claim was extraordinary, but if it was true I would expect to see a video of it, and that's what I saw. Even though this is a somewhat banal example I still think it's a good illustration of the general point.

    The Ray dude blew me away. I can't quote the 10 Commandments verbatim, but I feel like anybody that so much as looked at a Christian should be able to tell you the first commandment is some paraphrase of "I am thy Lord, your God. You shall have no other gods before me."

    I love that one with James Randi where he talks about alternative medicine, I think it was on TED but I'm not sure. Any way he starts by downing a whole bottle of "sleeping pills". So funny.
