I have used WD-40 as an emergency lube because the chain was bone-dry after the cleaning and I needed a quick fix. Please bear in mind that WD-40 is an emergency hack and not meant to be used as a primary chain lube - I recommend using machine oil or a good chain lube spray to keep the chain in good health.

If you keep chain dipped in vinegar(35rs/600ml bottle), the rust separates and floats to the surface. Only problem is that the vinegar will separate the top shiny layer as well. Also the links will get loose because with zero rust, the tiny rods also slide off from the holes. If you go to the bicycle wholesale shop, they will sell you new chains for 80rs per piece if you buy 5+ quantity.

Thank you 👍🏼 That's a nice tip. But the acid in the vinegar would be too aggressive for the chain - as you said, it will eat up the top layer as well. Soaking in detergent after scrubbing with kerosene is a safer bet, which is what I have been doing for many years and it has never failed, no matter how dirty the chain is. Yes, some chains are cheap, but depends on the make and quality. Here, in Mumbai and other big cities, they are expensive 😖.

@@AnandOn2Wheels Get down at cst stn and head north west. 10-15 walking distance. It is a bicycle parts distributors area. KBE enterprises, 455, kalbadevi road - mum02. There are many but go to this one specifically since others will examine you before quoting price. The good ones(pure distributor and wholesale) are inside the gallis. The ones on the main road are retail.

🤣 can't get cheaper than this.. replace WD40 with machine oil.. kerosene and detergent come cheaper than those fancy chain degreaser cans
