The behavior was observed in at least three southern male sea otters, according to the study this whole rumor comes from, in a population of give or take 2,000 which really isn't a lot. The study believes it's atypical behavior due to a lack of female sea otters. And interestingly enough, there's southern and northern sea otters. Given that this behavior hasn't been documented or seen in the much bigger northern sea otter population, maybe that lends to the case that this behavior isn't normal. It's just sadly down to 'humans hunted them to near extinction and now they have less females; And just like how we see polar bears extending their dating pool to grizzly bears as they're ooching closer and closer to the endangered species list, southern sea otters are displaying atypical behaviors because of our previous interactions with them'. I'm sorry this was so long, but the sensationalism of Truth Adjacent Thing™ is getting exhausting.

I would not be a good doctor for that otter because I would be too busy swooning and giggling over his utter CUTENESS. Otters are such precious animals
@@bored_potato since sea otters need to learn survival skills from their mothers, rescued pups who were way too young when separated from their mothers actually stay in aquariums and zoos. The only place that has a surrogate program for sea otters to learn survival skills and be released back to the wild is at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

It’s sad but sometimes the mom is physically not able to care for the pup too. She might have been starving or sick or injured. In the case of Joey at Vancouver Aquarium, there was a deceased female otter near where he had stranded, which very well could have been his mom.
