    I died of the cuteness overload at the baby stretching at 1:02 & he chomping on food at 1:40 !! 🩷🩷🦦🦦 TOO CUTE!!!!!!!!! How can u resist giving him belly scratches!!!!??? I don’t see the harm of doing that since they’re gonna live in the aquarium for the rest of their lives. What’s the harm in a little bonding with the keeper?

      I think he rushed the story. Btw don't you think is weird that the Atlanta zoo would be hanging out in California coast to grab these pup and fly them across the country? They were probably rescued by Monterey Aquarium, but since their surrogate mothers are all busy, they called in the network, to see who is available to adopt them. Another thing, how do you reunite mom and pups? Is not like you gather all the wild adult otters and see who would come out to claim the pup.

    • @PamelaPulla
      @PamelaPulla 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Michelle Goodrow Many rescued otters are unable to return to the wild because they are lacking the necessary survival skills that they normally would have learned from their mother. Some rehabilitation centers have surrogacy programs set in place where they have rescued adult female otters essentially ‘adopt’ a recently rescued baby otter in order to teach them the necessary skills in order to survive in the wild, but as you can imagine such a program is quite difficult to run so not all aquariums have the funds or the resources to support them. The carers in these facilities also make a big point of covering themselves from head to toe so that rescued otters hoping to return to the wild don’t have any attachment to human beings, which is a very important part of their return. Rescued otters would die if released without these survival skills.
      I am also curious as to why they hadn’t taken the mother as well or attempted to reunite them somehow if at all possible, but this is a news reporter who probably just rushed through the story so we don’t know all of the facts of the situation. I’m sure the people who saved this baby otter from a deadly storm did all that they could have considering the circumstances.

      They could have waited for the storm to die down and either return him to his mother, or caught her too so she could raise him and then return them both to the wild ASAP. The only option was not euthanasia for Gibson, as they mention elsewhere. I noticed they very specifically said Gibson's mother was wailing for him, but the female cub they found at the same time was an orphan. The Monterey Bay Aquarium has females that act as surrogate mothers, teach the babies all the life skills they will need, and the babies are then released back into the wild.

    Why wasn't the baby otter returned to its mum the next day, after the storm died down, if she was crying for it? And if that was too difficult, why are the kits being raised by humans and not surrogate mothers? They will obviously be imprinted on people and be unable to be returned to the wild as they won't properly learn how to catch, dispatch and eat their prey.
