Rip Mike Fiore Ironic that Reggie Fountain has done hundreds of races and kilo runs, and Mike passes away before Reggie. Granted Reggie never ran a Catamaran, and Mike was killed in a catamaran speed record attempt running.
csonkaperdido sad day when we lost Mike. I actually worked for both Fountain and Outerlimits. Both great boats but the rigging and finish work with Outerlimits was on a different level. Mike made sure everything was perfect.
I worked for both Reggie and Paul/Mike Fiore. One thing I will say is that Reggie did in fact run in a Cat and he actual raced with one in the late 90’s however it wasn’t a speed record attempt. Mike was a brilliant mind and V bottoms will never be the same without him. You have Mike Peters at fountain, you have the late Mark Spates that did most Donzi, Extreme, Statement steps bottoms along with several others. With all the old minds dying away I feel it is time for the younger minds to step up.
@@barneyba LOTO is an event that is designed specifically for record runs - that's why you have so many classes and they WERE attempting to set a new record - what class I'm not sure but that is the entire point of the event. That's why they give out the "Top Gun" award to the fastest boat.
You can't mess with southern boys. Reggie's old engine builder Troy Dennis was the vest there ever was turning wrenches on a big block chevy. I use to live a cross the street where they built them and tested. He was badassery. That other boat didn't stand a chance and all that talk he figured he better just go home 😅
I keep wondering if a dimpled-bottom might do the same thing on a boat that it does for golf balls. I've been asking this question for 10 years now and no ones ever posited an answer.
I do.....I worked on the damn thing....worked for Craigy quite a few years. BTW, it *was* a 44 before he had to take a chainsaw to the nose to make race rule limit of 42 :) quite the story there. Irony, that was not his fastest boat, that would be his Skater 44 another boat I worked on. I'll be perfectly honest, Craig was not a good person, he would steal from his own mother without a second thought.....those who knew him, knew.

In rough water conditions, the fountain went over 190 mph. In calm water conditions, the outerlimits went 187. The average between the two laps for the outerlimits was 181 mph, the average for the fountain was 177 mph. In the end Fountain is the world’s fastest V bottom
Mike Fiore died in one of the most horrible crashes you will ever see in a top speed attempt. Boat flipped over at 170mph. And I'm not talking about these slow V-hulls in this video. Ozark shootout Big Cats running 240mph.
Worked with an great guy named Leon back in 1994 who was the crew chief for the Ohio Steel boat. That was first really fast fountain. Ran in the mid 130’s. Good times for sure. Lots of sleepless nights though.
There's a 47 with 3x1350s in Sweden that runs in the high 120s/low 130s(I think...the owner won't say what his WOT is). Which brings me to the question of how heavy are the Fountains now that a new company is building them?? Could the new 42s come near to the V bottom speed record with 1650s?
@@dieseldog00 the 42’s are about 8000 pounds with motors and drives. The problem with the 42 is that there is not enough bottom to break 175-180. The speed record set by the outer limits 42 was about as fast as you will ever get with a 42 foot hull. The will need the 47 with triple 1550’s to hit close to 200.
@@eugeneweeks3325I believe a 47 weighs around 15000lbs? Cut down the deck, strip it of everything not racing related and put 3x1750s in it. 200 might be achievable. OL got 180 with twin 1650s but APBA might sanction whatever speed the Fountain achieves...but maybe not...Three 1750s is a TON of money. 1350s are $225k each. That would put the 1750s well over $1m.
@@dieseldog00 money is not an issue when your trying to set a world speed record. The 47 with carbon fiber lamination with 3 motors and drives should weigh about 11,000 pounds. With huge power in all 3 engines you should be in the 190’s or possibly 200.

Reggie admitted he know there was a difference between mph and knots, he had the 29 fever slipping at 5.51%, that's impossible, boat test had it slipping at 15.95% which is right where it should be, he had the 27 fever slipping at 12.27%, that's impossible with that power, and boat test had it slipping at 23.72%, which is right where it should be for that power. Don't believe anything he says.
Lot of the big Fountains went to Europe. You see quite a few up North and on the East Coast where they race. 'Strictly Business' is a well-known Fountain raceboat up there in Jersey.
Reggie got old... and the financial hardships in 2007 hurt....he was a cool guy...and gave outer limits Thier props....still no one can overtake Reggie's legendary career.
The Outer limits boat heard what the Fountain boat was running, tucked tail and headed for the hills.
Reggie is old-school cool!
Grew up across the river from Fountain and remember getting woken by open headed big blocks for months before these runs. Miss the old Fountain.

There should also be a manufacturer time trial in 8’+ seas to determine the strongest hull design....real traditional offshore racing.
Fountain got it covered. I spent 5 hours in a 38 Lighting . From Atlantic city to Maryland in 6 foot seas. was impossible to drink any beer.

i had a deep vee , only twin 496HOs but it definitely ran a lot faster in small chop than dead flat water so maybe ??/

It does make it more aerodynamic but not enough for racers to spend money on that design

Growing up in Rhode Island and watching these outerlimits boats roll out of the factory in Bristol will always have them as a favorite in my book.

After Leon came Reggies best engine builder Troy Dennis. Troy was building engines so powerful, it was ripping up the Mercury out drives.
Pretty sure this was the year Reggie was caught with illegal ballast tanks to make it appear the boat was heavier than it was.
