A few things to know before beginning your One Piece journey.
1. Do not read the episode titles. They are often spoilery as fuck.
2. As a "continuous run" shonen series, there will be a lot of material used to pad out the run time. Go into the series expecting potential pacing issues, such as lots of flashbacks and recaps (especially at the beginnings of episodes), copious reaction shots, and some filler episodes here and there. I highly recommend looking in the comments section of each episode to know when the title card is so you can skip all the "last time" recap, and there are lists online indicating which episodes are filler and thus skippable (though be sure to watch the G8 arc after Skypiea). It's not as bad as DBZ (we don't get Luffy screaming for 5 episodes straight) or Naruto (no string of what feels like 100 straight episodes of filler). But there will be some pacing issues that seasonal anime usually doesn't have, so just know it's gonna happen up front and set expectations accordingly.
3. One Piece WILL make you cry. I don't care how macho of a man you are, you will cry manly, manly tears while watching this show. There is no shame in it. Anyone who has watched through a significant portion of the show and claims to have not cried is either a dirty filthy liar or is without a soul.
4. There is nearly nothing in this existence more cathartic than watching Luffy finally punch someone what REALLY needed punching. You will come to recognize and accept this.
5. Do not think of One Piece's extreme length as a barrier to entry. One piece is one of the most bingeable anime ever created, like crack in anime form, and you will be glad that there is so much of it for you to experience. This story is literally a journey where the fun and enjoyment is embarking and experiencing it to its fullest.
6. Ignore anyone who tells you that you have to "get through" the beginning or that the story doesn't "get good" until episode XXX. One Piece is a fun and entertaining show right from the start and you will have a good time with it from episode 1. The only reason why long-time fans say stuff like that is because the show gets SO good as it goes on that the beginning of the series seems like trash when compared to where the story ends up. So don't go in thinking that you'll have to slog your way through 20-30 episodes just to get to the "good part". It's good from the start and only gets better.
7. One Piece is weird. Seriously, there will be parts of this show that the only explanation for what the hell you're watching will be "it's One Piece", and that will be a perfectly understandable explanation to anyone else who has watched enough of the show.
8. One Piece is NOT a kids' show. Sure, it looks like a goofy and fantastical adventure featuring gimmicky pirates, and the main character is almost literally a loony toon. That is all a clever ruse. This show hits deep and hard, and covers weighty topics and themes that no kid's cartoon here in America ever would. I mean, yeah, it is a goofy adventure with gimmicky pirates, but it is so much more than that. Do not show this to your kids unless you're sure they can handle some serious shit.

Although on point 6: This anime has been going on for 23 years (the manga turns 25 on July 19th if I remember my dates right), and Oda started this at the *age of 22* (and started planning at an even younger age) and there's been a clear learning curve to him as a writer and as an artist, considering he's been working on it pretty much weekly for *over half of his life.*
I love early One Piece. Sure, the stories are simpler and shorter, but considering that back in the day, the biggest barrier of entry was "unconventional art style" and "wacky concepts" (honestly, they're still with us, I'm never getting over the Beast Pirates, or Señor Pink), the stories needed to be that to hook people in. Just enjoy the ride and remember that as Oda gets more confident in his writing, things are gonna get a lot more big.

@@TheLatokuivaaja Oda has been thinking of a pirate manga since grade school. There are sketches of some characters that go all the way back to that time in his life. Otherwise, you're spot on. He did release a one shot comic titled Romance Dawn a year or two earlier that eventually became the loose blueprint of One Piece as we know it today. It started it's run in 1997 and Oda would have been around 22 years old at that time. He was born in 1975.

I love how it fits the theme where we are currently in the story. The whole song and visuals gives a heavier meaning if you know what is happening. If you already felt emotions going in blind, oh boy the feels will hit you like a truck if you know what's goin on.
It is definitely my favorite.

One Piece storytelling is on a different level out of the “Big 3” Oda has a way with storytelling and giving you bits and pieces of detail that show up later on in story arcs and Oda’s callbacks to things are amazing.
So many little details that get so much cooler with context opening up later on, it's easy to get to the point where nothing can be completely counted out as unrelated

With how emotional the openings alone have been getting you, I feel one piece would be perfect for you. Oda is very good at emotional storytelling and it's made me and a lot of others shed a lot of tears over the course of the show. I can assure you it's a ride well worth getting into because I can tell you'll be enjoying nearly every second of the journey, from luffy's humble beginnings as a no-name pirate to helming a very powerful crew renowned all over the world.

opening 14, the line "oh I know what I'm supposed to do" hits just as hard after 10 years of watching the series. I started watching when they only had a couple hundred episodes buy I really got into it when they were at episode 650ish. opening 14 is definitely one of the best openings.
Same that opening was really emotional. Especially after what happened in Marineford and the flashback

I watched one piece in my worst and darkest period of my life, and honestly one piece save me from depression. For me is the best anime .

A REAL man of culture. My favourite opening is 14 as well. And it will hit a lot harder once you catch up to that part of the story and read the lyrics while watching the video (I can explain in a later video, once you're caught up). It's THE perfect opening. Although I really really love some of the other openings as well, mainly the 1st (One Piece's anthem, "We Are"), the 15th ("We Go", which is kind of a "remake" of "We Are", it is hype af), and the 20th ("Hope", by the same singer who gave us 14, sharing some of its best qualities with it, the lyrics, the video, etc., going hard).
I´m currently following 3 people through their journey with One Piece and if you´re watching it, you´re gonna be the fourth one 👌
Seeing him start tearing up after just watching the openings makes me want to see what happens when he hits the peak emotion in One Piece.

Your reaction to Luffy’s brother reminds me why - if you’re watching One Piece - you should never watch the openings (just listen or skip) until you’re all caught up with the anime at least. If I were you, I’d forget what I saw in these openings and watch it afterwards. The surprises are huge and have a great build up. You’ll enjoy it regardless tho, I’ve watched the series 2 times and once incompletely. I’m doing it again after Wano for sure! Every time I see something I’ve missed :)
I love Baka and Test! It's short though so you'll get thru it fast. Baka and Test is binge worthy and hilarious.
I was gonna comment the same, I absolutely love One Piece probably my favourite manga. But it warms my heart hearing people check out Baka to test, it was my first dvd and the comedy is brilliant.
I relived all 1022 episodes watching this. I laughed, I cried and so many times I thought "You don't know the half of it bro!" Like when you said "Is it his brother?" or "She ain't short." or "[Sanji] getting married?" or "Dragon buddy, [...] he just like a problem!" or "Is big dude a part of their crew now?" Damn, this show is so jampacked with 100% pure awesome, it's impossible to explain, you have to see and live this on your own.
I have watched every opening so many times that I don't get bored at all. And never disappoints me at all. it's just too good, and thus guy wanted to get one bad opening so he can react to but had to disappointed due to too good openings 😂😂

Watching this with you definitely brings back so much good memories watching One Piece and how much the show has progressed over the decades. The fact that One Piece is only halfway through, shows how good of a show it is from character development and storyline.
I hope you enjoy it thoroughly. Animation style may look 'sub-par' for the first handful of seasons (keep in mind this was made in 90s). It definitely gets better and better.

And your gonna have to give it time early on cause trust us when we say it gets extremely better the more you watch it as you can see from the openings. There is a reason there are over 1k episodes and more popular than ever before and still not done yet.

youll love one piece. honestly I didn't even start watching it til the beginning of the covid pandemic! and I thought the same thing, "ohh there are too many episodes" but see that's that's good! you don't have too wait week after week too get into the next episodes! also it goes by way quicker then you think! just watch it and don't TRY catching up. just enjoy the ride. it's really worth it. this show is amazing the story and fighting is unique! Ive watched both of your onepiece op reactions now and enjoyed both. I must say the red haired dude is named shanks and yes he came before gildarts. Onepiece manga started the year 1997 my dude. I wont spoil anything for you but you have good intuition with your theories on most characters. I personally like the green haired samurai named zoro better than sanji (the ladies man with good foot work). Everyone luffy added to the crew has a position (doctor, navigator, musician, .... etc). Brook the skeleton is also really cool. All the crew members have back stories and grow/learn on their journey. You will really enjoy the series i think. It truly is an adventure of a lifetime.

Oda is on a whole other level in comparison to anything I've ever read or watched. And it's finally gotten that amazing animation after all these years. Been here since the beginning and I'm so happy to see its come so far!
My youngest brother was only about a month old when One Piece first released (he was born June 17th, 1997). I didn't get into it until I was in my early 20's and now it's my absolute favorite series, a lot of fond memories with my brothers as we continue to grow older.

That black stuff you've seen is called Haki. It's split into three categories. Two of the three, anyone can learn, but the third, only those with the affinity for it can learn.
Though some characters make do with just physical capabilities, the early parts of the show typically have the Devil Fruits as the main power threat, which are typically split into three categories themselves. But in later arcs, Haki becomes a natural counter to many devil fruit abilities, though not necessarily all.
Dressrosa is chaotic af and by far my favorite arc of One Piece

My friend One Piece is one of the greatest stories ever told. The world building is incredible nothing will ever come close to it.
One piece is an anomaly. There is no other show in existence which switches flawlessly from belly laughing hilarity, to emotionally scarring, and wrapping it up with a big bow of hype. Sometimes multiple episodes in a row.

It’s a long journey, especially watching the anime. But it’s well worth it!
I was Week to Week watching the first time i listened to Opening 14. I literally balled my eyes out crying at the point we were at in One Piece it was the most fitting song and it hit because it coincided with the actual story so well. The part where we see how Luffy met and helped everyone in his Crew for the first half of the story was not a part they needed. 14 is still in my top 3 to date !!
I have lost count on how many times I have watched/listen to "Fight together". Still get at the minimum a tear every time. (It is my favorite One Piece OP)
