Seems smart, immediately escalating the likely first contact to an armed conflict. How about trying to contact the shielded complex or one of the satellites?

It actually doesn't sound that bad. I'm assuming the shield is protecting humans. The people under a shield that advanced likely don't see a couple of ships as a significant threat. The aliens are only getting a single ground assault craft for reinforcement. That's not a planetary invasion, just a large security detail for exploration.
