    • @halogeek6

Probably glassed Terra. From the context clues and the fact earth isn't actually described in the story. It can be surmised taht earth was destroyed and the terrans in this story are the survivors. Biggest give away is when they say that the terrans died in the first contact war. That these terrans are merely there to guard earth. Probably the martian,, jovian and venusiam colonists. Early days of colonizing those three would leave very little to be noticed from orbit.

If we think about how the humans in this story lashed out possibly a few things.
One they messed with kids, maybe hurting/injuring/ possibly killing one, that would spiral into fights and the fights spiral into a battle, and the battle into wars.
Two, possibly try to enslave us/ “tame” us. Easy to see why we would lash out and fight back then.
Three they just straight up started killing us for possible recourses, maybe a abundance of special or valuable things in our system or planet.
Either way I enjoyed this story, sometimes you don’t need a full backstory or resolution, sometimes you want to hear about the guy who kicked a beehive and how he got stung the shit out of.

My first instinct is the same. But on more careful thought: It feels like the first contact war with the humans was based on atrocities from the Shriike, and then continued because the other species misunderstood or didn't want to understand what had happened. So I would probably go for something in this order: 1: A proper conversation between the other species and humanity, to get to the bottom of the actual events and who's at fault for what. 2: Reparations towards humanity. Whether that be a promise for after the war with this new species, or before it. (because I doubt humanity was the aggressor in the first contact war with them.) 3: Clear agreements on what humanity's role in this new war will be. And 4: Clear agreements signed by every species involved on what will happen between humans and the other species after this new threat has been dealt with. (maybe not an alliance, but at least a non-aggression agreement or something.)
And only then would we help fight this new threat. Because no matter how spiteful humans can be, we also don't like needless suffering of innocents from an "evil" enemy. And just watching everyone else burn out of spite would only mean humanity would have to face this threat alone in the future.

@@Sanquinity I feel like with what was said, Humanity was already doomed. Earth wasn't targeted during the second war, which means we were pouring everything into defending Mars. Why? Because that was our new home. Our old home was destroyed by the Shrike. And i got a sense of absolutism when the Xenos called us animals, as if by destroying Mars, they knew the dealt the deathblow which would cause our species to go extinct.
I would tell them no, and take solace in the fact that their species die before ours.

What exactly the Shrike did to Earth, doesn't really matter. It was so horrific, that all of humanity put aside whatever old differences they had, and whatever morals they might have aspired to hold regarding other species. The Shrike taught Humans the most dangerous of lessons: Strike first, always, no matter what.
    No. Matter. What.
Peace means nobody sends ships into Human space. Peace means accepting that Humanity is a force of nature that can not be tamed. Peace means the concept of war against Humanity is as ridiculous a concept as a war against a black hole.
The Shrike got to close to the black hole that is Humanity and were consumed. The effect on the rest of the galaxy was the gamma ray burst resulting from that event. Much like "fighting" a gamma ray burst, it took everything the rest of the galaxy had and cost them dearly, with the outcome begging the question: Would it not have been better to simply evacuate what was in the gamma ray burst's path?
The answer is yes, it would have been better, just as it would have been better to simply get out of Humanity's way. The level of death and destruction is solely because they tried to fight Humanity, if they had gotten out of Humanity's way instead, then the black hole wouldn't have had anything to eat, and wouldn't have kept emitting gamma ray bursts.

What I could think of is that the shrike had either destroyed earth or made a biological weapon which wiped out humanity’s children. Those would both explain why humanity put such value on its people. We never saw earth and I was fully expecting the fleet to find earth as a devastated rock. I’d say more likely for them both to be true as the humans really hated the shrike and I don’t think just one would warrant THAT much hate to commit complete genocide to that degree

    • @Chuito12PR
      @Chuito12PR ปีที่แล้ว +2

Genocides happen and those are against other humans, its going to be WAY easier for everyone to get rallied behind a common existential threat that isnt human. As some have pointed out shrikes are birds that impale their prey and combine that with human children and details such as shrike being crucified then it starts making more sense why Humans would aggro so hard. They likely did something horrific such as torturing children for fun and attempted to enslave humanity for similar purposes

They decided to kill us in the cradle. And they were successful. But they were stupid enough to walk away before making sure that everybody was dead.
And in return humanity decided to end them once and for all. No negotiation. No peace. Not even the possibility of truce with the rest of the Galaxy.

it could be some delicious intra federation politics if for example finding out sure the terrans where experienced in war before...but it was x actions that turned ther culture into nothing but war... specially if they show they are willing to help..provided they are given resources of course.. if the whole galaxy is threatened.
not to mention... is gaia destroyed ? or a smoldering husk they reluctantly turned into a industrial helscape to save what could be saved ?...is they all still naturaly born or is the 'all terrans are dead' a dual term.. such as only a handful is natural born and the wast majority is clones etc ? ...so many delicious potential side topics for context if turning this kind of story into something longer then a one shoot right ^^

The Reavers were a force of raiders. To unorganized, too short lived, and too haphazardly equipped to match any real military force. The core worlds could have annihilated them but that would not only mean admitting they were real but risk everyone knowing how they were created. Since they only preyed on the remote outer worlds, most people thought them a myth or exaggerated tales of pirates they would not risk exposure by sending a fleet out there to take care of them. The considerable damage they did to the Alliance battle group in Serenity was mostly because of the total surprise at an absurdly close range that they had. Military operations esp with the coordination and precision that the Terrans were showing would be far beyond a Reaver's capability.
It did kind of invoke them with the word choice and imagery though.

As a stand alone story, we're given two lines 16 minutes in hinting at a motivation for the start of the whole conflict. It just kind of makes the whole thing feel a little... pointless? Not the story, but the war. Since the aliens are reacting to the humans, they have a clearer motivation but it comes across as weaker because the initial conflict feels pointless. Maybe there's another story with the context I need to be invested, but as is this just feels like over 20 minutes of someone waxing poetic about war while listing historical battles.

I have to edit part of this... space is NOT 3 dimensional. Space is 4th dimensional. Otherwise, changes would occur instantaneously in space battles.
Please keep in mind that TIME is just a way to quantify change. One second is just what we describe as a standard unit for the amount of change that happens between one tick and the next... and ALOT happens in a watch between those ticks.

    • @frydguy2331
      @frydguy2331 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@thecursed01 space with zero time would be what?
Time is the measurement we use to describe changes within (a) space.
Changes in shape, size, position, temperature, radiation, and induction of non-thermal wavelengths (radio, cell, audio, visual light, TV, etc) are all described using time.
The pieces on a chess board are an example of "space without time." They just sit there until you move them. This example works because we are 4d creatures manipulating 3d space.
Perhaps you should think of those dimensions as length, width height, and changes to those previous dimensions relative to other 3 dimensional objects.
This will also allow you to understand what a picture of 3d space represented on paper is, and then the multiple pictures with minimal changes to represent motion for television.
A higher dimensional being would be able to separate space from time, the same way we represent movies made in 4 dimensions on a 2 dimension screen.
We separated height from length and width while maintaining the change ratio.
Mind you, since it's video, we can change the ratio of time (1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1, 0.5:1 ... viewed time : relative time)
Once we can fully control our personal relative time, we will have evolved into 5th dimensional beings, capable of manipulating "time". This is 4d chess in real life. We are seeing it in small bites here and there, but we can't fully control it.
"Planning ahead" and taking "course corrective actions" to stay on the plan, is a part of this evolution in thinking.
Unfortunately, another aspect of this evolution has to do with comparing past events to current events to plan for future events (aka pattern recognition)... [going political, sorry, but it's part and parcel for a "unified theory"... political science and all]
Talk of WW3 has been popular since Biden ran from Afghanistan, and more so now. But the actions of the population has mimicked Germany from 100 years ago. Both sides agree that this will turn to war, we are just waiting to see who calls it first.
It's almost a self-fulfilling prophesy. Both sides have been pushing, thinking the other is going to start the war, which starts the war.
The start of the American Civil War had an audience of picnic goers, because no one knew it was the start. It took YEARS to realize what actions started what major conflict. We may already be in ww3, and not even know it.

@@thecursed01 Universe in a Nutshell came second. I read it in 2001. It's good, very descriptive, but I found it odd that his use of string theory to prove a blackholes' output also brought up the idea that they lose mass. He spent a chapter on the possibilities of blackholes loosing mass. Meanwhile, his theory has 2 intersecting waves creating enough reaction to cause 1 string particle to escape. But those 2 intersecting waves were created by 2 string particles "landing" causing a ripple effect that Mr Hawkins describes as "ripples on water caused by rain. Some rain splashes back up, but in space has escape velocity" [HEAVILY paraphrased]
This is STILL a +2 input for a -1 output... so how he went on a tangent of blackholes shrinking, I can only appreciate as "artistic liberties of the Absolute Genius"
      That said...
Spacetime is paired like that to drive home their intertwined nature. One of the chapters in Nutshell discusses the 13 to 18+ multiple "possible" dimensions we ACTUALLY live in... granted, that was the philosophy used by the highest minds 20 years ago. Things have a tendency to evolve.
This kind of gets into the same issue Mr Hawkins discusses in "A Brief History of Time" about the Catholic limits the pope set. Limits on science, so that a Generic Omnipotent Diety (GOD) can exist. Things like "let the time before the big bang belong to God," which is why we look at the moments AFTER the bang, but not before.
Beings of higher dimensions would be literal gods to us, therefore, don't think about them. "Thinking about the devil gives him power" (-Someone trying to quote the Bible, badly)
Thinking of them as 6th or 7th dimensional beings really changes the Bible...
... so, yeah. Space and time can be separated the same way we seperatate dimensions. Draw a picture of a real life still object onto a paper. You've just taken a 3d object and made it 2d. Now fold the paper into an origami crane, and you've turned a 2d object into a 3d object.
We are 4th dimensional beings. Life, which can "change" our own length, width, height, and position at will.
Rocks can't move on their own without outside force, making them 3 dimensional beings.
It's far easier for a 4d being (life) to manipulate a rock, than a rock can manipulate life. It happens, but the results are typically considered "catastrophic." That's why we can't separate time from space, yet. Catastrophic results. The biggest hurdle is the idea of using 3d objects to uplift us to the 5th dimension (time travel).
We can't use a machine for this. Even if we DID trick a rock into thinking, it's not nearly evolved enough (or us) ... yet.
BTW. This is my typical use of comparing past events to current events to predict future events

It starts off with genocide and civilian torture that we aren’t given the motivation for until 16 minutes in, and even then it’s just a couple lines. There’s no sense of time throughout most of the story. It just jumps from one event to another. The plot point of “ftl jumping is slowly killing them” is forgotten almost as abruptly as it’s brought up. The major battle the story has been struggling to build up to gets called off half way through, and then suddenly the whole war is called off as 4th dementional cosmic horrors start attacking and we’re called upon to fight them on behalf of the civilization we were attempting to exterminate.

Teleporter through weird science slowed Earth's rotation slightly with each teleport. Humans enthusiastically used the teleporter because Whistler gave it to every country. Humans: "go pound sand, this is litterally a problem of your own making"

Yeah, humans can be murderous, but genocide is something that can only be maintained for a short period of time before the massive backlash against the genociders eradicated them. This story required more context than it had and it felt like a huge waste of my time.

It's part of a series. There's at least two other stories making reference to the Shriik and humans with Jumping tech that seem to connect to the same universe.
      Explore a little.

The Shrike attacked without warning or diplomacy. These aliens, the Terrans' first evidence of life beyond their humble blue-green ball of rock and water and dirt, assaulted this newfound race believing them young, vulnerable, ripe for the picking. A resource-rich series of systems that could be captured with relative ease, hardly more difficult than if they were uninhabited.
The Shrike were correct. But they did not expect Terra to retaliate on any meaningful measure. A scant few battleships - precisely twelve - brought to bear against the approaching force comprised mostly of mining and colonization vessels were far too little to defeat the superior firepower and technology of the greedy, warlike Shrike's military escort, numbering in the dozens. Scant for a combat operation under normal terms, but magnitudes more than what would be needed to destroy this fledgling species and claim their holdings. They didn't stand a chance.
Terra and her native-born sapient race fired second, yet came first in a short, violent annihilation of what came for the vast resources which they claimed were worth less than a single one of their own kind's lives. When the Silent Shot was fired onto them, a starboard broadside, the targets simultaneously disappeared as if a collective hallucination of the warlike Shrike. Plasma launched into the Black, finding no target. Dumbfounded eyes witnessed their last glimpse of the star-spattered cosmos, watching plasma fade into the void as guns opened up from portside. Some attentive Shrike saw the vessels reappear to port in the moments before their fall. Few had time enough to scream before the depressurization left them to scream into a void whoch would not carry their cries.
When Humanity met a new alien race, they were nearly unaware. The ships they faced appeared different, but fired upon them - and fell to a similar fate. No matter.
The Shrike brought nothing more than a threat of war and a promise of prosperity upon unconditional and immediate surrender. The latter rejected, the former challenged...
Even today, centuries later, the Shrike have yet to reclaim their status as the most aggressive warfighters known to this galaxy. And even today, scattered remains of the Terran Navy avenge their long-since glassed homeworld in unpredictable, madness driven assaults on anything which breathes.
No ship travels without eyes watching the void, trained to be terrified of the ever-present threat of the Terrans' endless crusade against all life but their own. Even still, the increasingly ramshackle vessels produced and manned by newer generations of this jump-maddened species are found derelict only once their crews have succumbed to degeneration and insanity at the hands of unmetered subspace jumps. The same weapon which makes them indestructible is that which destroys them. Yet younger and younger generations face their own demise, lifesigns showing progressively less-mature combatants aboard their shrinking dreadnoughts.
No sane trader moves without escort. No guns are unloaded. No soul is safe outside the atmosphere of well-protected ground. No sapent being exists that does not fear Terra and her undying vengeance.

So, I might be a big dum-dum, but can anybody pls explain that last jump to me? Was that a) the terrans jumping to the messenger b) the messenger jumping to the terrans (because they scavenged the tech) c)the messenger telling the terrans to jump (like a weirdly shortened "fly, you fools!") d) the other galaxy jumping in or e) the other galaxy jumping in, revealing themselves to be just more of the supposedly defeated terrans that came in from said galaxy to join the fray...
