melopeak -I totally agree with you. There is no reason to say one of these giants is better than the other. Just listen. It's like comparing Pavarotti with Domingo with Corelli with Bjorling with Gigli with di Stefano with . ..well you know. I hope I didn't leave off anybody's favorite tenor.

I honestly hate it when people compare composers. The comparison is a distraction from the gift that is given to us from above.

Bach was a fan of Vivaldi and there is obvious influence by Vivaldi on the Brandenburg Concertos, but TMK Vivaldi apparently had little chance to hear Bach's music, mainly because of the Catholic/Protestant divide and the fact that Bach's music is mainly religious (Lutheran). Although Vivaldi was a Catholic priest, his music was composed mainly for the orphans at the orphanage he worked for, and when they grew up, many of the orphans were able to make a living as performers playing Vivaldi's music throughout Europe, which gave Bach a chance to hear it.
Thank you ! I love their music but didn't know they were contemporaneous. If I understood right, but why Bach could be a fan of Vivaldi and Vivaldi not know Bach ? If they were not of the same belief or church ? Just wondering not arguing and thank you again.
There was huge enmity between Catholics and Protestants in those days, the Catholic Church which had ruled Europe was losing its control after the Protestant Reformation because now it had competition, and rulers lined up with one or the other for political reasons as they fought wars with each other, and fired up their bases to hate each other and demonize each other, and they certainly would not play each other's music in their services. And not only was Bach's music mostly religious, but the whole Bach family for generations before and after JSB were involved with (Protestant) church music to the point where "Bach" was a colloquial term in Protestant Germany for any church composer. But Vivaldi's orphans traveled around Europe in small orchestras making a living playing concerts, and from them Bach was able to get copies of Vivaldi''s scores and study them, and he admired Vivaldi's work. If you compare the Brandenburg Concertos to most of Bach's music, the Brandenburgs show strong influence by Vivaldi.
Tree Walker, so much insight which explains alot and heightens our appreciation of such genuis. We are lucky today to listen to this side by side without any religious, political prejudices or otherwise. Thanks👍.
Maybe this is an omen of the future in which there will be no more religious and political prejudices dividing us, we can have different beliefs and still appreciate each other.
If someone only knows Bach through the Brandenburgs and wants to know what I mean by saying that the Brandenburgs are obviously influenced by Vivaldi, you have to compare them to other music by Bach. Just do a search on "Bach cantatas," for example (of which he wrote hundreds) or the St Matthew or St John Passions or Mass in B Minor -- or some of his hundreds of organ works -- all of which are examples of what Bach sounds like when NOT influenced by Vivaldi. Then compare that to the Brandenburgs (which are about the most cheerful and lively things Bach ever wrote, Bach is normally very solemn and Vivaldi seems to have cheered him up a lot).

Bach transcribed some of Vivaldi's pieces as he did with lots of other composers.

@@jaikee9477 Vivaldi brought to the table a rhythmic vivacity and harmonic clarity that Bach absorbed and added to the blend of French dance genres and ornamentation and German counterpoint in his summation of Baroque style. Without Vivaldi's influence, Bach's music might have much less impact than it does. Both were Icons My Friend.

Bach versus Vivaldi? No, Bach AND Vivaldi. The Red Priest taught Bach many things: Bach's violin concertos would be poorer if not for Vivaldi's characteristic openings and virtuoistic violin writing. Excellent soundtrack!
