  • Sit down and grab your favorite beverage as this is a long one. Today I show how to replace your rear axle seals and bearings on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner. This particular procedure is also relevant to several other Toyota models, such as the 1st Gen Tacoma, T100, and I believe the Tundras as well. The parts may differ a bit, so be sure to check with your favorite Toyota parts dealer to ensure you've got the right parts. In addition to replacing the seals and bearing on the rear axle, I also show how to replace the bearing case as well. I hope you enjoy watching!

    Sir, you are a hero. The video is packed with experience and the part list in the description is the icing. Thanks for your effort, I'm off to wrench.

    I watched many different versions of this repair, and this was the most intelligent solution without destroying parts. Press jig was inexpensive and crucial. You helped me greatly. Much appreciated!

    this is truly awesome stuff... my '98 is needing this I believe, and a mechanic in my area wanted over $1200 to do it, and he said something like "once we open it up we don't even know what we'll find," so I said something like "no thanks... I don't want to be held captive" and walked out. I'll do it myself, and this is an excellent guide.

    Very impressive, detailed video. Seems like you hand washed all parts prior to the video, lol. That's why a 2 hr job would take me 8.....i prefer to clean....start clean then finish clean. The video views/angles and explanations sure relieve the worries of a novice like myself.

    Great video! It is totally clear and consice. Unlike some of the 'demolition derby' style practices seen in other videos. Well done! I will be doing this soon on a 1993 Surf (JDM 4 Runner) in Australia. Just hope I can get that special tool shipped from US...
    Thanks again.

    Hey Man, really good video (I subscribed). Super fast forwarded segments for the simplistic parts and slow and easy for the detailed instructions. Editing your electric impact gun audio, (removing the lugs) to the beat of the music was next level.
    I did this repair this past weekend. Using Duane's excellent tool and your video made for some easy wrenching.
    I have never seen the Factory Service Manual. You commented it instructs the tech to 'cut off' the retainers........wow that's just crazy. And cutting it off all but guarantees a path for the gear oil to find a way past your newly installed retainer.
    The only part of the video that was hard to watch was when you went after the snap ring using screw drivers......ouch. I used a set of pliers; 'Stanley Proto J250G Proto 9-Inch Lock Ring Horseshoe Pliers' and the snap ring popped right off.
    Keep up the good work. I'll be watching.

    • @WeekendWrenchTurner
      @WeekendWrenchTurner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't unfortunately. There's another video by Timmy the Toolman explaining why you cannot do this with the 12 ton. It is because the press is just not deep enough to fit the axle into and still be able to press anything.

      Good question. I suppose you could, but it does add a bit of risk for only a little bit of time savings. Not sure how much, but just made sense to do them one at a time for me. Thanks for watching 👍

    It's been about a year. How was has the repair turned out? You get it right this time?

    • @WeekendWrenchTurner
      @WeekendWrenchTurner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for asking! I did end up replacing the bearings again, but only because I did a rear disc brake conversion (check out the video). I did not replace the seals when I did that as they were not leaking! So, I'd say the factory seals are the way to go with the "Dr Coffee" method of flipping the inner bearing retainer so the bevel faces outboard. Thanks for checking out the video!

    pop one side of the seal out of those used bearings clean with brake clean and repack with grease pop seal back in , good as new , I.d reuse them if they were fairly new , why not

    • @WeekendWrenchTurner
      @WeekendWrenchTurner  ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize for singling this comment out, but this is an extremely bad idea. These bearings are cheap and there is an extreme risk of catastrophic failure if the bearing fails. It is cheap insurance to put in new ones especially if you have the tools 👍
