Salivary gland diseases or tumors generally present as painful or painless swelling or masses on the side of the face, cheek, neck region. These swellings are generally painful or painless respective. Most patients complain of dry mouth decreased flow of saliva. As a result of constant urge to lubricate the mouth by drinking water difficulty in chewing the food, difficulty in swallowing as well as ropy thick saliva. They generally present in terms of painful swellings and they'll be firm to hard on touch, on feel rubbery in feel. Sometimes involving facial nerve in case of a tumor many causes have been noted for salivary gland diseases. One could be age related second could be due to formation of calculi or stones within the duct as a result of which it blocks the saliva flow and thereby resulting in swelling of the salivary gland. So treatment of salivary gland diseases depends upon the condition. If it is just a stone or a duct obliteration or an obstruction we treat accordingly but in case if it's a tumor we go in for salivary gland dissection removal of the gland as well as removal of the nodes associated with it.
