West Germany was extremely lucky to find a man like Adenauer, who had absolutely no ties to the Nazis but who also had such a strong economic mind when it was so desperately needed.

I love Konrad Adenauer. His vision helped to rebuild Germany. He had integrity and strove to overcome adversity. He had the people's best interest at heart, not something you can say about many politicians then or now.

The Germans were lucky to have such a great man as a leader. It is a shame that his courage and honesty is missing from western politics nowadays.

The reason such leadership is missing, is that there wasn’t any fascist dictator to influence the politicians.
The Nazi Regime shaped Brandt if you will.

Damals wurde man Politiker, um eine Wiederholung des Nationalsozialismus auszuschließen. Heute sind viele Leute Politiker geworden, um Karriere zu machen oder um ihre Ideologie linker Faschisten durchzusetzen.

At this time, Adenauer was at the height of his power and popularity. His party, the CDU, got 50,2% at the election 1957, so he needed no other party to form his new/old government. The pension reform 1957, the accesion of the Saarland in the same year and the liberation of the last 10.000 POWs from Russia in 1955 were reasons for this overwhelming success.

Thinking that the political Career of the "old one" as Mayor of Cologne started all the way back in the Kaiserreich. He was even awarded with numerous medals of the Kingdom of Prussia including a white-ribboned Iron Cross second Class (the white Ribbon signaling the medal being awarded for non-combat related achievements). Later on he received the Order of the Golden Spur by the Papalcy which theoretically granted him the right to enter a church on Horseback.

Konrad Adenauer has certainly earned his place in Germany's history books. But although I identify closer politically to him, I absolutely admire Kurt Schumacher. Thanks to him, you could be socialist (which many Germans were) and not be communist. If not for the loyal opposition the SPD provided, West Germany may have fallen to the communists.

Thanks to the Americans, Adenauer and the nowadays disappeared survival instinct of the Germans, seeing what was going on in the Soviet dominated parts of the ex Reich, it did not. You might remember the strict opposition of the Social Democrats against taking active part in NATO based self-defence. So, please, no more myths.

There was no two party system in Germany, there where at least always three, the conservatives, the liberals and the social demokrats.
Today there are six partys represented in the German parliament (the far right, the conservatives, the liberals, the social dempcrats, the greens and the far left) and some more who are only represented in state parliament or the EU parliament.

Adenauer, what a man! It is he who resurrected postwar West Germany from the ashes of WWII by starting the free German nation on a course toward European integration and firm alliance with NATO and setting a policy of economic management that made possible the GDR's "Wirtschaftswunder" in the 1950s and early 1960s. Without the steady, competent hand of leadership provided by Adenauer in those most trying of times, it is doubtful West Germany would've been on firm enough economic and political footing once the Cold War heated up to effectively buttress the Communist threat that loomed directly across her border!
