Bill Clinton Interview: Reflections on Presidency & Legacy

  • President Bill Clinton recalls the lessons his mother taught him, the impact of briefly meeting John F. Kennedy at the age of 16, becoming Governor of Arkansas at the age of 32, and how he felt when he became president in 1992. President Clinton discusses his belief in second chances, gives his thoughts about his 1998 impeachment hearing, and how he believes historians will look back at his time in office.
William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States was born in 1946 in Hope, Arkansas. He graduated from Georgetown University and in 1968 won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. He received a law degree from Yale University and entered politics in Arkansas. In 1975, Clinton married Hillary Rodham and in 1980 Chelsea, their only child, was born. Bill Clinton was elected Governor of Arkansas in 1978, but lost a bid for reelection in 1980. He regained the governorship two years later and served until 1993. During his time in office, Governor Clinton earned national recognition for his progressive programs, especially his efforts to improve the quality of public education. He defeated Republican President George Bush and independent candidate Ross Perot in the presidential election in 1992. When President Clinton won reelection in 1996, he became the first Democrat since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. Following the early failure of his health care reform initiative, President Clinton pursued a moderate but progressive domestic agenda. During his tenure, the welfare system was reformed, the sale of handguns was restricted, environmental regulations were strengthened, and a massive federal budget deficit was turned into a surplus. Internationally, the Clinton Administration expanded international trade, intervened militarily to end “ethnic cleansing” in Bosnia, launched peace and trade initiatives in Africa and the Middle East, and promoted a framework for peace aimed at ending the strife in Northern Ireland. In 1998, his relationship with a young White House intern resulted in the President’s impeachment by the House of Representatives. A trial in the Senate found the President not guilty of the charges brought against him. President Clinton apologized for his conduct and vowed to keep working as hard as he could for the American people.

The issue is his policies and decision making didn’t come to fruition until the last decade.
NAFTA was a disaster. Full stop. Blasted away million of manufacturing jobs and continued the decline of the American middle class.
He signed the Crime Bill. It’s the most racist bill since Jim Crow “state” law. Millions of black and brown people in the prison system for minor drug crimes. Ruined generations of families.
He also inherited a strong enough nation. Economy was rough but not like today.
He’s an overrated president - and personally he’s a cretin

Brilliant, imperfect man who strived to leave the country better than he found it (budget surplus anyone?). And a marvelous communicator. Absolutely one of the best. His speech in support of Obama’s second run arguably nailed the election - a work of oratory art. A shame his tenure collided with Newt’s shameless destruction of political civility.

If you get it wrong the first time, own it - think about it - and in humility correct it at the next opportunity - the God of *second chances.* 2. The defeat was good for me, *I learned from it* - and he shared the lessons he learned. Well said, thanks.!

Although I have very limited interest in politics and I don't want to actively participate in politics. I just watch and observe such personalities of history so that I can learn from their life challenges and their response mechanism showing their thinking style, personality and mental and physical toughness in unbelievable adverse conditions.
Mr Bill Clinton is one of them. My personal observation is that such humble and soft people are usually prone to such mistakes. That is why I like serious but little bit stubborn people in leadership category such as Army Generals.
One thing is clear that Mr Bill Clinton is an honest man who accepts his mistakes being human and that only one thing is benchmark of a very solid and strong personality because people of such calibre has to go through unbelievable, unbearable pressure within the mind and outside of the brain, social pressure which can kill your personality for ever.

Let's never forget the SOR signed into law. It has successfully punished thousands of citizens trying to put their lives together after serving time yet are now, in just Florida being forced to live in the Everglades in homeless camps with no jobs, no food, no clean water, no sanitary conditions, no ability to better their lives. That's just one example of the factions of laws in one state meted out to individual citizens of our great, maybe not so great, nation. Scaring the world is what the SOR has accomplished. People are afraid to come out of their homes all across America.

@@ritemolawbks8012 I agree. Clinton had his personal flaws, but he also took a more centrist ideology than the Democratic Party. Clinton is a policy wonk, especially, in terms of the economy. It's also important to note, that Clinton had "second chances" and learned to be a better Governor and a better President. For example, taking a listening tour of the state, after losing the Governor's office in 1980.

I will admit Clinton was a good president and had the country in good shape during his presidency, I think his foreign policy was just as bad as the Bushes, Obama, etc. I grew up in the 90s and the atmosphere was much brighter. As a person he has a lot of skeletons in his closet, some very bad depending on how much you want to believe.
