    This is pretty cool, and aren't you technically writing in reverse with this and then you flip it

      You are writing in reverse. Or: you have to write in reverse in order for the text to be readable once flipped.

    I used to have one of these that was way smaller but I never learned how to use it even though I’m legally blind and a complete Braille user. Like I rely on Braille every day. I think part of the reason they would never talk to me neither did I take a huge interest in learning it is because of all the digital notetaking methods nowadays. But I still think it’s cool in handy so maybe one day😀 sorry I mean talk to me like by a teacher taught

      Hi, I’m sorry the speech detection didn’t hit your mark by 100%, but I appreciated your correction.
      I understood your comment and it was very interesting.
      Also, you might be interested to know that Apple’s iOS was updated not too long ago to have much more speech to text detection that even does punctuation automatically.
      I’m personally not blind, but use the system quite a bit for convenience. 🙂

      @@GabrielGarcia-co9qx hey there thanks for replying. Yeah Apple’s been awesome and I’m excited to use a new advancements in the future. Funny enough I recommend my friends who have perfect vision to use speech to text or dictation. It’s quite handy.
      May I ask do you have any questions for me because I’m legally blind or just in general. I’m always happy to answer them😀

      Question about these braille note taking devices. Do you have to write in reverse braille since you are flipping it over when you’re done?

    • @lillysummeroriginals1213
      @lillysummeroriginals1213 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dogshake hi there you are correct. As you were flipping the paper over to read the Braille you do have to write in reverse unfortunately. I know that there are some sold where you can write normally even though I’m not sure how those work. I was writing in reverse is the normal way to use this tool. I think that’s part of the reason why it’s lost a lot of popularity and why a lot of people don’t learn it anymore due to the easier digital ways to take notes. Do you have any other questions

    This reminded me of a really really cool invention idea that I had years ago: an e-reader for the blind using electroactive polymers. It would work like a typical kindle-style tablet, but while e-paper displays work by passing electric currents through a special e-ink material to make it shift between black and white, this new device would pass electric currents through a special electroactive material to make it *expand*, creating bumps and ridges that can be physically felt.
    It would also have no touchscreen controls, because obviously a blind user should be able to run their fingers over its surface without the device interpreting such actions as taps or swipes.
    Fair warning: A TON of R&D work would need to go into testing the viability of the tech and getting it working right. There are plenty of holes in my idea, like the fact that the material will probably need a continuous supply of current (unlike e-paper displays), or the fact that the material will likely try to expand in all directions, not just bulge outward pn the surface of the device.
    There is no chance I'll ever manage to bring the product to market myself for a multitude of reasons, so if you do end up wanting to pursue development of such a product, absolutely feel free to do so, just remember to put my name in the credits somewhere or something .

    That’s really clever. Is there much of a learning curve? I’d imagine finding the proper place to poke your stylus would take a bit of time to learn, but what do I know lol.

    • @Clostridiumbotulinum37
      @Clostridiumbotulinum37 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It can be hard if you don't grow up using it a lot. There are little ridges in the windows, so you know where to put the stylus. The main things I had to get down were:
      1. The correct way to hold the stylus and the correct angle to poke the dot.
      2. Writing backwards. At some point it becomes intuitive, but it takes a lot of mental effort at first to flip the braille around in your mind.
      3. Learning how to not lose your place, and learning how to find it if you do. Most slates have little dots every 5 cells, so you can easily find where you left off. Also, you can use the stylus to feel where you left off as well. Which brings me to the 4th point.
      4. Learning to read what you've written without flipping the paper. This was never directly tought to me, but I had to learn to read what I'd written by using very gentle pressure with the stylus and dragging it across the back of the page. I learned to do this so I wouldn't have to open the slate and flip the page if I lost my place or forgot exactly what I'd written last, like if I zoned out or something.
      5. The issue I still have to overcome is speed. I just timed myself, and it took 1 minute and 40 seconds for me to write the alphabet. This is obviously not ideal, and I'd like to increase my speed considerably. All I can do is practice, and remember to push the dots in a time efficient pattern.
