Social engineering is fascinating - it’s amazing what you can get done depending on your tone and even body language. Usually a well mannered polite but authoritative voice and stance gets lots done.
It is also sometimes useful to be pathetic and timid, too. People love being all high and mighty to others, helping you out of feeling of doing something for this "poor" fellow over here. It's great, it's just great.

Cox's performance was more realistic but I kind of understand what Hopkins is trying to do here: he's a robot, he has no feeling. It's the mimicry of civility.
In Hopkins' scene, the woman on the phone is also far more timid than the one with Cox, which makes assertiveness a sounder choice, if not necessarily the soundest.

I like Hopkins' take on this scene a lot, he's practically salivating over Will's info, and it's incredibly creepy. I think Cox's take on it is a little bit better, since it feels a lot more believable that the secretary would give him the address in the Manhunter scene, if I got a call from someone talking like Hopkins' Lecter, I probably wouldn't trust them with someone's personal information.

Being a office manager for 10 years, I was the gate keeper, toss the salesman and scammers and keep the clients and supply chain people. The boss is busy and only deals with the important things, so you deal with all the dum dums. Someone I don't know calling for confidential information? Yah, I get like 5 calls a day of people trying to run all kind of games on us. I'll have them give you a call back, what's a good number to reach you at? No, some excuse? Guess it's not that important. "Click"

No sixth's finger, but other for that - almost completely perfect description of a not-so-tall man with small accurate teeth... pretty good)

all 3 adult lecter actors have actually performed this scene. hopkins portrays it as slightly more sinister but it fits with the feeling the audiance should feel as it IS a sinister act hes performing mickleson does well but it does sound very weird him saying "darling" brian cox however i think had the best delivery as its so casual and believable that you would never think he was this evil cannibal
My 85 year old mom totally would have said "you can't fool me". Watching her toy with the "hi grandma" and "are you getting all your benefits" scam callers on her landline is one of my favorite pastimes right now...the best was when the "you owe the IRS" dude called and say "oh you are the IRS? I have some things to say to you"...guy couldn't hang up the phone fast enough.
It's amazing we get this scene done by 3 superb actors, plus different directors and such. It's so exceptionally rare to get a scene performed 3 different times to witness, enjoy, and study it from 3 different perspectives. This scene as part of the trinity of variations should be required viewing for creatives of all types. I should probably read the book...
the way he pauses at 0:07 before saying his name and mispronouncing the last name a bit as if he's reading it off a piece of paper to make it sound more realistic, so subtle yet genius
After watching Red Dragon with my Dad, he insists that this wouldn't work in real life. He says that if Lecter did reset the phone call, it would be impossible for him to reach an outside line; he'd just end up connecting to the asylum's telephone operator, who definitely wouldn't dial a number for him. Also, he doesn't even give Dolarhyde a definitive address; all he says is that Will lives in Marathon, Florida. How does Dolarhyde manage to find Will's home at the end?
1. They could’ve just given Lecter a public use phone (not knowing what he’d use it for) that was at the hospital’s front desk that is able to reach outside lines 2. Dolarhyde probably searched up Will’s name in the phone book, and then found his address through that.
But why would they give Lecter a public use phone in the first place? Doing that would be just plain stupid. Also, Will's a former FBI agent; don't they usually leave people like him out of the phone book for their own safety?

Every single part of Red Dragon is so much weaker than it's companion scene in Manhunter. I just can't enjoy this film one bit because of seeing Manhunter before.
So I have seen the other two scenes, and I most say if I was new like the girl in phone I probably would have gave Hopkins and Cox the address, but I will straight up hang up on Madds, Cox sound like someone working and needs that info, Hopkins sound like a nice old guy who doesn't want to be delayed, but Madds sounds like a robot with that creepy accent lol.

I’ve just watched the Brian Cox version of this since so many have commented that it was better. It isn’t. Cox is much more forced, coercive and aggressive whereas Hopkins is much softer and suggestive. The ‘dance at your wedding’ remark comes off smoothly with a paternal affection rather than the business like tone of Cox. I think Hopkins version would have a higher likelihood of success. Besides…. No one plays a better Hannibal than Hopkins 🙌🏻😑

There was very little (if anything) diabolical and creepy about Cox's portrayal. I simply could not envision him as a brilliant psychiatrist. His performance was about as 'wooden' as one could get. Wait. Sorry. I forgot about Keannu and Walberg.

Prior to this scene they only put him on the phone specifically with his lawyer, he hangs up the call and does something to the phone to hack his way into getting it to call whereever he wants.
@@dwightschrute4560 Cox's lecter struck me as anything but desperate. On the inside he was cold and empty like Hopkins' lecter, but he was better able to disguise it, like most psychopaths do in real life.
It's just his home address, and it was in the contact papers of a Civilian Psychiatrist who was a friend of his. Lector just called the Doctors' office and bluffed his way on.
This would never work. One, they are monitoring his calls real time, and would hang that fucker up instantly. Two, in the caller id, it would state maximum security prison. LOL
This was done back in 2002, and based on a story set in the 80s. They didn't have Caller ID back then. And he said he was calling his Lawyer and for confidentiality's sake they had to not listen in. The phone was supposed to bring incoming calls only but he used a gum wrapper to reset it to call an operator.
Ugh! As a Manhunter fan I have avoided this film like the plague, this clip popped straight up after the original with Brian cox and I thought what the hell. So manipulative! nothing wrong with Hopkins its just the ham fisted “direction” and music cue by that godawful hack Ratner.

There was very little (if anything) diabolical and creepy about Cox's portrayal. I simply could not envision him as a brilliant psychiatrist. His performance was about as 'wooden' as one could get. Wait. Sorry. I forgot about Keannu and Walberg.
I adore Hopkins, he’s one of the finest living actors, but Mads did this scene better.

Cox was the best with this scene. I would not have gave the number to Mads he sounded like a serial killer which was what he was trying not to do. Plus I would’ve been suspicious the moment a guy with a Danish accent said their name was Bob Gear 😆

He's considered insane, not a normal criminal, so by law they couldn't refuse it or monitor it
Prior to this scene they only put him on the phone specifically with his lawyer, he hangs up the call and does something to the phone to hack his way into getting it to call whereever he wants.
I think this was a weak scene in the film. Hopkins could have put a bit more expression into it, and the voice actor on the phone was very clunky.

I met Brian Cox during my time at film school. He was very pleasant to talk to. He did a lecture on acting.
Manhunter was a shit film. Brian Cox portrayed Lecter as a more reactive and desperate character, not methodical.

It's just his home address, and it was in the contact papers of a Civilian Psychiatrist who was a friend of his. Lector just called the Doctors' office and bluffed his way on.

This would never work. One, they are monitoring his calls real time, and would hang that fucker up instantly. Two, in the caller id, it would state maximum security prison. LOL
This was done back in 2002, and based on a story set in the 80s. They didn't have Caller ID back then. And he said he was calling his Lawyer and for confidentiality's sake they had to not listen in. The phone was supposed to bring incoming calls only but he used a gum wrapper to reset it to call an operator.

As a Manhunter fan I have avoided this film like the plague, this clip popped straight up after the original with Brian cox and I thought what the hell.
So manipulative! nothing wrong with Hopkins its just the ham fisted “direction” and music cue by that godawful hack Ratner.
