Thank you Professor Norman for this amazing explanation. Just yesterday I was in a frustrating debate with a friend from Syria who basically blamed Hamas for not agreeing on two states solution and for not providing a peaceful resistance or asking Saudis for help! She also claims that Hamas are ordered by and work for Iran without producing any evidence. I was completely disappointed in her for blaming the oppressed

'How should the Left understand the present crisis in the Middle East, its origins and its historical meaning?' One's understanding of history depends on where one stands on the political spectrum, a notion demolished by Dr Finkelstein's dismissal of 'the most right-wing government' (1:26:53).

If the Chinese government said we will make up the shortfall of the funding for the UN Mission for the next 2 years, the West's lever over Palestine will be blunted, an exercise in its soft power here and in other places would be hugely helpful..
@@constantquestioning4010I do think a combination of the Arab regimes plus rich Gulf ones could supply critical finance to the Palestinians, I also think ceasing business and trade ties with Israel would be the minimal that an Arab counterweight could muster but if China put some true soft power to work that would be considerable..
Palestine receives plenty of money, do you know how they’ve spent that money? Infrastructure ? Utilities? Working on creating a useful people and peaceful government? No, rockets, tunnels, Islamic jihad, not a money problem.

Dan's vision of the left explained why nobody feels represented. He preaches a gospel with hope for a better future based on faith alone... That's very conservative in substance
You’ll find that Norm shares the same leftist politics as Dan, but the problem here is that it’s entirely irrelevant to the situation of Palestinian resistance in the form of Hamas or any other resistance group.
Dan Lazare's critique of the Nat Turner analogy holds water. His pessimism is well-founded. I worry about a regional conflict, and from there? Who knows how bad it could get.
I find it notable that people seem to be here (in the comment section) cheering on Norm Finkelstein in a way which appears less to do with Norm’s positions and more to do with the reactionary tendency to coalesce around a charismatic leader. There were a number of very well stated, pertinent, and apropos of my point which I’ll get to, refreshingly novel statements made by the other panelists. Judging by the cheerleading from the comment section, the preference is merely for a recitation from an aesthetically preferred performer. This is not a knock on Norm’s positions, work, or anything but absolutely a call-out to the rest of the Platypus cadre that we need less cult of personality and more engagement with theory. Norm himself would say the same.

Thank you for bringing this Panel to the Internet. Professor Finkelstein kept the panel on track with the historical facts rather than people's feelings or mere speculations. He clearly had more to say but remained careful to let everyone speak without dominating the conversation. The gentleman called Dan seemed to be stuck in the over simplified jargon of "Proletariat Struggle". This is more than just class warfare. You have layers upon layers of struggle. You have the overarching racial colonial struggle at the heart of this which was not clearly conveyed in this forum. I think professor Finkelstein touched upon it a bit when he mentioned that the founding Zionist government of Israel was the most left wing associated government in Israel. So even the most left wing can still be reinforcing a racial/ethnic/religious stratification of society. The goal aught to be always for the liberation of all of the oppressed and marginalized everywhere. A true liberation movement should never run counter to the indigenous population's religious, cultural or ethnic identities. It should be elastic enough that it embraces all aspects of their identities. If all groups are allowed to embrace who they are first, then we can move all people in the direction of liberation and true equality, true socialism. The fact that we care about other people's liberation without any direct personal benefits means that we are already practicing a type of socialism not withstanding the existing governmental-economic structures.
