'How should the Left understand the present crisis in the Middle East, its origins and its historical meaning?'
Same as asking how the Left should understand astrophysics or zoology, Hitler's invasion of Russia or Putin's invasion of Ukraine, as opposed, to how the Right should understand them, and how the Centre should, maybe also the Centre-Left and Centre-Right. One's understanding of history depends on where one stands on the political spectrum, a notion demolished by Dr Finkelstein's dismissal of 'the most right-wing government' (1:26:53).

I find it notable that people seem to be here (in the comment section) cheering on Norm Finkelstein in a way which appears less to do with Norm’s positions and more to do with the reactionary tendency to coalesce around a charismatic leader.
There were a number of very well stated, pertinent, and apropos of my point which I’ll get to, refreshingly novel statements made by the other panelists. Judging by the cheerleading from the comment section, the preference is merely for a recitation from an aesthetically preferred performer.
This is not a knock on Norm’s positions, work, or anything but absolutely a call-out to the rest of the Platypus cadre that we need less cult of personality and more engagement with theory.
Norm himself would say the same.

Truth speaks for itself and becomes self-evident.
Nothing to do with idealization - but truthful ideas rooted in FACTS not phoney adherence to an anachronistic, conveniently vague and theoretical pseudo notions of « the left ».
As a European, there is nothing left in the US neocon regime of « government by donors ».
Finkelstein states correctly that « left » pertains to humanitarian empathy and resistance against tyranny and injustice committed through the abuse of superior power, oppressive.

Thank you for bringing this Panel to the Internet. Professor Finkelstein kept the panel on track with the historical facts rather than people's feelings or mere speculations. He clearly had more to say but remained careful to let everyone speak without dominating the conversation.
The gentleman called Dan seemed to be stuck in the over simplified jargon of "Proletariat Struggle". This is more than just class warfare. You have layers upon layers of struggle.
You have the overarching racial colonial struggle at the heart of this which was not clearly conveyed in this forum. I think professor Finkelstein touched upon it a bit when he mentioned that the founding Zionist government of Israel was the most left wing associated government in Israel. So even the most left wing can still be reinforcing a racial/ethnic/religious stratification of society. The goal aught to be always for the liberation of all of the oppressed and marginalized everywhere. A true liberation movement should never run counter to the indigenous population's religious, cultural or ethnic identities. It should be elastic enough that it embraces all aspects of their identities. If all groups are allowed to embrace who they are first, then we can move all people in the direction of liberation and true equality, true socialism. The fact that we care about other people's liberation without any direct personal benefits means that we are already practicing a type of socialism not withstanding the existing governmental-economic structures.

Interesting the parallel between the Islamic Arab and the Jewish right wing ..
Not defending but saying it for what it is worth:
The anti jewish sentiment fades away outside the Israeli occupied area and is only pronounced amongst
    The oppressed
    the Muslims revere Judaism
Yet they despise the ideology of Zionism and the exclusivity of a state only for the Jews who-ironically- look down at the Semitic Arabs despite their closeness to them ethnically, linguistically and religiously! that resulted in breaking the Arabs’ dignity and forcing them out of their homes and reduced them to the today resistance fighters under a banner of Islamic fundamentalism!!

I thought the guy making parallels between Azov and Hamas, and using the talking points on Russian loss to describe the Hamas operation interesting, basically a smart twisting but still too obvious.
If you say that the solution is a workers' coalition across the world... You're part of the problem, how? It's a concept which means nothing without a path

Yeah, i agree. I think his Marxist view is too parochial for a conflict involving colonialism, occupation, freedom, resistance, genocide, etc. If we take his mention at face value that right wing movements are in control everywhere, how the heck does he think a workers movement will arise. Most of what he said I found trivial

I am sad to understand you lack of knowledge of history. I am sad to understand that you are helping Israel to be destroyed. I am not a warrior in any way. I am sad listening how they
are helping US to be destroyed (ORIANA FALLACI as one of my favorite references)

yes this was a panel with a format.
it was good to see NF in an academic format, his home-pond.
not that i didn't want to hear him go.
but it was refreshing to see him in an academic way, a panel, and watch the two veterans that were
not picked for "fireworks" hash out some important things that usually get ignored in "arena" style click-media.
always for better mic coverage tho.
