When cats lay down like that it is a form of submission. I agree with others that the deer probably had fawn nearby, which gave the deer intense confidence which the bobcat no doubt could sense. Awesome footage!!
In my rather new experience, when my cat lies down like that he's just observing for the most part. Now if lies down and rolls to the side that means he's ready to defend himself. It usually happens when I try to groom him, or brush his teeth that he'll quickly lie down, roll to the side, and then flat on his back to get in proper position to start using his hands and feet for clawing and kicking if touched lol.
Yep…it saw the deer didn’t backup and could easily trample it…on my property I see Bobcats peacefully walking around with fox and deer constantly…sometimes they’ll actually walk out of the woods together side by side
I know some bobcats can take down a deer . But a healthy doe can defend herself with those hooves. In the animal kingdom the young and the weak are prey. That doe wasn't going to be nobody's food source that day.
If the deer was killed 2 hrs later by a hunter , at least somebody got a couple months or more supply of red meat. Deer populations in America are millions several millions
As has already been said, deer are not anywhere near that intelligent. All that happened was something caught the deer's attention, which the cat noticed, so the cat turned to look too. There was no 'tactic' or 'strategy' going on here.
Most predators won't mess with healthy prey. They go for the ones that are weak. This deer would have been in big trouble if this was a cougar or a bear. A bobcat will take down a small deer. But is will most often focus on one that is not in the best condition.
