Knowing what i know about programming for the atari 2600, that is insane. When you consider all games on the atari 2600 run at 60fps and are drawn on screen from left to right...its a miracle, there is a playable game there.
Have you seen my Double Dragon video? Check out this version on the 2600:
th-cam.com/video/TDZbgODw158/w-d-xo.html
@@michaels9917 What's even more amazing is what people are homebrewing onto it now. Ports like Star Castle and original titles like KO Cruiser which is, for all intents and purposes, Punch-Out!! for 2600.
That's not even touching on the fact that there is basically a fully functional port of Super Mario Bros on it. It's the little video game system that could.
I didn't really play any of the ports when I was young, it was always just the arcade game for me.
It's a series I always enjoyed playing even if I died every few seconds 😂
Another awesome video Jamie!
Hey, thanks very much :)
I recall playing the Amstrad version for weeks back in the day and was so happy when I completed it.
what a game that was.... I've enjoyed playing it back in the day on my spectrum, my cpc and my amiga and later as a retro player on my own c64!!! I agree with you about the amiga version placement! It was really good fo the time! I must admit that i would be really pleased if a had it in any of the beloved in Europe 8 bit machines of the era(zx,cpc,c64)!
Loved this in the arcade. I can remember onekid being able to complete it on one credit. I bought the Zx Spectrum version and loved it. I have the arcade version on Xbox as part of the SNK Collection.
I had the CPC version which I loved back in the day. It was programmed by David Shea and for a while it was a timed exclusive. Well not literally, but that’s how it turned out for the British micros as the C64/Spectrum versions didn’t appear until about 18 months later. David Shea ended up programming the ZX version too.
Wow - ANOTHER video?! Entertaining as always and a very welcome break from stressful days. Fantastic stuff, takes me back to the old rows in the playground in the 80's ❤
@rozzbozzgames hey, no probs. It keeps me out of trouble 😀
@ Ditto, after a hard days graft I watch a few of your vids instead of popping out for a pint or two (which never ends well) 😂🍻
@rozzbozzgames well, it's a cheap way of entertainment.
Your best produced video so far, Jamie!
On the game itself, the NES version was my below average first exposure. That said, I love these games that cash-in on the Rambo and Vietnam exploding-hut action war movie phenomenon.
Throwing grenades at buildings in this game was fun!
Another great video. ! Thank you !!
My pleasure 😀
Glad you rated the Speccy version fairly highly. Graphics and sound perhaps could have been better but it just played really nicely. The C64 port is great but so tough, though admittedly so was the arcade original, but I just liked the extra feeling of progression I got from the Speccy version.
I remember hearing about this game a lot but never played it. I had a C64 with the movie pack including Rambo 2 though which was awesome!
Cheers again for another great video and congratulations on the 50th episode!!
Thank you
Loved the Speccy version 😊 - And Jamie, can you do a vid on *Double Dragon* please? Cheers 😊
Please see my playlist, DD has already been done, cheers

Please let us all spend a minute in silence for the C64 version.
well... 1 of them, which seems to be a trend with some c64 games, euro vs usa, and the trend doesnt always lean the same direction so maybe good theres often 2 versions. i remember the same thing with r-type, i got a demo of it on a magazine covertape and that version looked like a spectrum game, i was very glad when the "proper" r-type game appeared.
Another class video mate! Keep em coming! Remember playing the Amstrad version years ago for hours with my mate, quality game! Makes me wanna play it again! Also the introduction to this video made me laugh! 😅
I need to start warning adults again, really, did you watch my "idiots of youtube" video?
Yes I did mate, 100% agree with everything you said...this is a fun, entertaining channel, if you don't agree then fair enough, but please don't get annoyed, take it for what it is! I'm a Amstrad fan as you know, (and live for the day it gets number 1) but why be nasty if you don't agree with it? In my opinion this is a brilliant channel, well edited, full of nostalgia and it's something I look forward to after a long day at work..and isn't that the point? Keep doing what you are doing mate! It's top draw!
Congratulations on the 50th episode, they have been brilliant to watch.
As for this game it was the EU c64 version i played back in the day.
Good call!
@ yeah I enjoyed it, then eventually upgraded to the Amiga and played that version and was very impressed. I never knew about the c64 US version that looked absolutely awful what were they thinking !! Reminded me of how bad super hangon was on the c64 !
Btw, if I wanted to request a game to rank how do I go about it ?
Hey Jamie. I’m always surprised about the differences between the US and U.K. version of C64 games. Never knew that happened. Top ranking my man. The spectrum port is amazing. Shame on the NES as I played that version as a kid. I wanted to like it but just couldn’t get over how my C64 version was better but wasn’t supposed to be. I’m not surprised the Amiga wins again.
The Amiga did well from time to time 😀
Congrats on the 50th. Enjoyed them all ❤.
I've only just discovered them these last few weeks. But enjoying binge watching them. Loved this in the arcades back in the day.
Yay! Thank you!
Awww, thank you 😀
Love your channel, mate. Kudos! If I may suggest, the next video could be about Guerrilla War.
I'll see what I can do.
Loved the Amiga version, for fans of this game its worth picking up the SNK 40th Ann collection for the PS4/5.
Thanks for the video, would be interesting to know whether each version supported 2 players or not.
One of my favourite games on the C64 and managed to complete it once. I take my time and progress slowly as all enemies have the same pattern.
Mr Jamie you sound like a fellow westcountry man? I just wanted to say you are the f-ing GOAT with the retrobat guides!
Aww, thank you.
i loved the arcade game. The joystick blew my tiny mind i would play the amstrad version for mammoth sessions as it loops when you complete it so i would just keep looping the best thing i can say about the nes version is i managed to get some kid i found in the game swap section at the back of c and vg to swap it for donkey kong with no take back rule in place more fool him 😂
Hi I love this game I have the amstrad version which is my fav and I finished it back in the day😊😊
Yeah, like I say in the video. It was a fairly good 8 bit port.
Great upload, Jamie! I always suspected Ikari Warriors may have started life as the Rambo arcade. The red bandana, bare chest and black combat pants are a dead giveaway. Same as Rastan Saga was originally conceived as a Conan arcade game but Taito couldn't secure the rights. Please cover Side Arms at some point. There's two versions on PC Engine: one on HuCard and one on CD Rom.
Hey, thanks. Not sure if you seen it, but i have actually done Rastan here:
th-cam.com/video/tnafZj1Vc2g/w-d-xo.html
I always felt that without the unique spinner joystick found in the arcades, all the ports of Ikari were really just Commando clones - and some of them were pretty good games.
The spinner joystick is so fundamental to the gameplay that without it, you just can't have Ikari Warriors in anything but name.
You can build your own arcades with spinners bought from Amazon these days.
The NES version was one of those Friday afternoon regret rentals.
The kind of game you pop in when you get back from the video store, and moments later realize that this horror show is your entire weekend and you have completely screwed yourself with this choice, and there is no way your parents are going to let you take this one back and rent another one immediately.
You are stuck.
Loved this on the CPC,always seemed like a natural progression from Commando,Elite made/ported some decent games back in the day
Only ever played the ST version which I played a lot and loved
What I really enjoy about this series is the versions you have found! C64 USA version! 2600 version? Good work
Yes. The 2600 version was given credit because of its simplicity in most games.
I believe in the 80’s I played the Arcade port at Circus Circus in Las Vegas because my late uncle took the family for vacation.
Later I rented it on NES port from a video store it was similar to the Arcade port but had so much fun playing it on Friday night.
Great times growing up 😊😊😊😊😊😊
The 80s and early 90s was a superb time to be a kid. Tech wasn't too dominant back then where kids still had the ability to interact with the real world too lol
Congrats on 50 episodes and thanks
@twankistevenson3884 thank you 😀
Thanks Jamie.
My pleasure!
You are right about the ST version being sluggish, but I still played that loads anyway when friends visited.
Wish I had had an Amiga though that version looks really good.
Amazing in the arcade with the joysticks
I can imagine how good it was.
Never had this on the Atari or played it on the arcade, but the Speccy version for me at the time was utterly brilliant... As Speccy games go... Put many an hour into ikari warriors...
Can't really play this on mame, needed the dials to turn.. same as midnight resistance.
We got the euro c64 version here in Australia. Fun game!
Awesome 👌
Great video as usual❤ these will only be surpassed by the nightbreed video your doing soon 😊😊😊😊
It's unlikely going to happen sorry.
@JustJamie1983 its ok im only being a bit cheeky and just thought itd be interesting. Great channel man keep up the good work! You and OSG are my favourites ❤️🙏❤️
Im still toying with the idea of building a dedicated Ikari Warriors/guerrila wars cabinette using a gutted arcade1up cab
Build one from scratch. I did a video a long time ago on here doing a Bartop arcade. Great fun.
2 player simultaneous on the CPC moved it into the top tier of games on the system.
I'm most impressed by the Atari 2600 version. The programmers did a great job here! 👍😉
Same here!
The 7800 version is underrated. Really smooth scrolling and no flicker even with a ton of stuff on screen it's quite impressive. Also, no the 7800 could not do better sound than that ( not without the built in sound chip a few games had) . I found the difficulty not too bad for a game of it's time.
Ooooohhhh aaaarrrrggh, aaappples an ciderrrrr! 🥴🤓
Guinness, if you don't mind.
Hi mate,
I bought the Amstrad version back then as C&VG magazine actually gave it 10 out of 10 and said the graphics were as close as damn it to the arcade version. I remember the review still.
My mate and I had great fun playing 2 player mode with that one along with Gauntlet.
I did eventually get the Amiga version not sure if I ever finished it.
Amiga version looks incredible! Gotta give it a go soon 👍
Its highly recommended for sure
While the Plus/4 was primarily a business machine, it was capable of a much better version of this game (at least it is nowhere near as bad as Green Beret and Commando). What you are looking at is a stripped back game made for the C16 with no dedicated Plus/4 version released.
If you ever do Mercenary or Saboteur comparisons you will see just what the Plus/4 was capable of game-wise in the right hands.
This came bundled in with my A500 as part of the 10 Star Pack and it was a great introduction to gaming on the mighty 'Miggy. Great fun, especially in two-player mode.
Certainly better stuff coming out today, did you see my Turbo Outrun video from last year?
I actually rather enjoyed the Atari 2600 version. It plays decently well, and you can still get the tank. IMO it plays better than the NES game (as does the 7800 version, which I would have put near the top of the list). Heck it even has BGM - how many 2600 games have that? Good video, thanks.
No worries. Surprisingly a few 2600 games. Dig into the aftermarket/homebrew scene. Jeez. Somebody even did a Halo demake a good few years back.
The 2600 Halo was programmed by Ed Fries, former vice president of Microsoft game publishing. He led the team that created the original Xbox console.
Ikari Warriors...Commando...great top down shooters...my personal favorite though was Who Dare Wins 2 on the c64.
Who Dares WIns - wasn't that a Commando clone?
@JustJamie1983 Yes and when it came out it was almost identical to Commando...so they got sued by Capcom...they changed the level layout and the sprites and they released it as Who Dare Wins 2...that's why the first one is difficult to find.
I had the C64 European Version. Thought it was the best one we had of it's kind.
I played the CPC version a lot at the time which was very good. Very pretty and very playable, including two players simultaneously
Yup. The CPC had a couple of good games.
I’ve played it on C64 the first time and the good version then Amiga in my mind I put Amiga numero ono and C64 on second 😝🤩
If you accept a request what about Smash TV Arcade ports video?
So many versions for so many different systems 💙💎💙
LOVED the C64 version of this and much prefer it to the arcade release. I could never get on with the weird control scheme. The C64 game (UK version, natch) felt like a measured and (somewhat) strategic take on Commando. Almost a puzzle game to some degree, figuring out how to get to the end. Iffy graphics, mind.
Yes I get what you mean there 😀
The Atari 7800 only had the same sound chip as the 2600. The soloution was pokey chips in the cartridge games themselves. Only a few used it though , commando being one.
The problem with this game in the arcade and the ports was your fire never went far enough in front, you had to get really close to hit anything.
All versions (well the computer ones at least) have a button to toggle between firing at the direction you're facing and firing at a fixed direction. On Apple it looks like he's shooting at the entire cast of John Carpenter's The thing
Haha, didn't notice that.
I'm an American and I desperately wanted Ikari Warriors for my commodore 64 and I wonder what I would have thought of it back in the day if I had bought it. Keep in mind that the game would have been about 50 or 60 US dollars equivalent. If I got it on discount maybe half that but still
Good God. That's insane money for the terrible version you got.
I liked Commando, but I've never been a big fan of Ikari Warriors. My main memory of this game is of the tank being a deathtrap. I'm get in it, run over a couple guys, fire the cannon once, and then the tank blows up from a grenade.
I still don't understand why they have an American version and a European version for c64 games. They are always absolutely wank. This ikari version is more like a plus 4 game. Great video as always mate 👍
@paddyoconnor1825 ah, thanks, just very different times.
Not all of us are adults. I am actually 13 but still enjoy to watch the old games even if I have no favorite platform (got a C64 from my grandfather)
Well, if you see adults behaving younger than you. Do what i do. Laugh at them lol
@@JustJamie1983 I often really laugh about these wars.
@omegaidol it's a joke. Point is. At 40+ years old. I have known kids behave better going on about PS5 VS. Series X.
I got acquainted with Ikari Warriors via the Atari ST. I had just sold my 64 and upgraded. I think Ikari warriors sums up the ST well. Looks ok, until it moves and sounds awful. Better games of this type on the ST at least were Leatherneck and Dogs of War. On a side note, l went to my mates house the same xmas l got my ST to look at his Amiga.
I was gutted.
Love this series by the way. Cheers.
I guess you are right. A real shame. Some ST Games looked stunning.
MSX 2 should have been worth the win just for the dead bodies littering the battlefield. Full screen works better because the pixels are more square 256x212 than they would be for the more common on c64, Amiga, ST 320x200
...so many hours on Spectrum!!!
You can never have a bad version being honest. It depends upon what you grew up on. I started on the ZX81 so black and white blocky graphics. If you want to cover a game, try dinosaur maze I think that it was called. I won't give too much away, but you have to find your way out of a maze, and in that maze you have a dinosaur. The rest I will not say, but the things that I will say is that the graphics for the time was fantastic. 3D monster maze it was called, just done a quick search. You should do a live stream or capture of that.
Yup. I am familiar with that game. I might consider doing something with it one day.
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Retro Arcade Games !
Welcome aboard 😀
@@JustJamie1983 Thank you for your reply ! If you are interested in the nostalgic game culture of Japan, please subscribe to the my channel !
The joystick setup meant all the home versions were a poor imitation of the original. There was just no way to replicate the gameplay of the arcade.
To be honest. I didn't mention it. But the Amiga version actually handled fairly well.
That Atari version doesn't look to bad given the hardware!
Bro! How do you make these videos so fast?!?!
Lots of work, research, and good time management. I even get to do stuff for myself in-between too 😀
@@JustJamie1983 i have so much to learn. 😞
grew up playing the nes version, utter rubbish it was, horrible graphics, came with no manual so i had no idea you could ride those white tanks and choppers. It was insane hard and had also no idea of the ABBA code....anw, the game was bad, u could get stuck in some places and had to reset the game.
The only good thing about this game is that RALH and CLARK became two of the original characters in KING OF FIGHTERS and that blew my mind back then that they 2 guys are now in the best fighting game series ever made.
The NES version's nice since it makes the enemies play hopscotch instead of dying.
Haha
The US C64 game is unpleasant. I loaded it up on my 128D around a week ago for the first time in quite a while and was instantly frustrated by the terrible controls and obscene level of difficulty. Needless to say it wasn't long before I popped in a different disk.
Woah, I could only dream of owning the 128d. I had a C64G and a C64GS.
SNK Guerrilla War next please!
Add a request for Smash TV And also maybe Pit Fighter, just for fun? :) Great work; I'm really enjoying all of your rankings!
Have we done Victory Road yet?
Not yet sorry.
Happy 50th!
Thank you
Honestly the only version you can properly play this is the Arcade.
Us C64 gamers here in the US got so fucked over by that awful port. I still want my money back from Data East lol. And it wouldn't be until years later that I would learn about the great UK version!
Normally, the Americans got the better versions, no sir. Not in this case.
@@JustJamie1983 Looking forward to when you do Guerrilla War
The first Rambo movie is the best :)
Mmm. They are both awesome. Part 3 was just shocking.
@@JustJamie1983 Definitely. Just can't beat a cop-killer movie :)
That NES version looks like something I'd knock up it 5 mins on SEUCK ha
Exactly. Pretty atrocious for a commercial NES game.
@@JustJamie1983 don't know how that got past NES quality control.
@krissymarklewis1793 yup. Very wierd.
Hated this game....the cpc port was a waste of a cassette
I thought it was great
I think it was because I had this weird trackball joystick thing that wasn't a proper trackball...just imo buddy...wasn't my cup of tea.
Quicksilver software did the horrible US port of Ikari 1 & 2 and Kid Niki, all three were trash. Nobody seems to know who Quicksilver Software was, and nobody wants to admit they were involved with them.
Recently had an Amiga retro game evening/night, Ikari Warriors was one of the games we played.
It's a classic.
Yes, the Atari ST has no hardware scrolling or sprites so when scrolling with lots going on it was challenging to keep a good frame rate, but with clever programming it can still be done, look at Xenon 2 with smooth parallax scrolling and masses going on, it looks so good that despite being a lazy ST port on the Amiga I didn't even realize until I found out later. I was lucky to play the Amiga version of Ikari Warriors, you can see the main character is really Rambo, didn't know it originally going to based on Rambo II, but they didn't get the licence.

WHERE DID THE HAIR GO?!
?
DO PACLAND
I unfortunately had the 🇺🇸 version. It's actually one of the few games my dad bought. We played the arcade at my dad's work and loved it because of the 2 players (a big deal in the 80s) I guess the screenshot on the back of the box was the Amiga version I believe. I don't ever remember being more disappointed in my childhood!
Always thought Rambo 2 (the movie) was a turd🤷
Fair enough.
@@JustJamie1983
Nothing personal 😉but it's a rare thing for a sequel to be any good
@federicocatelli8785 hmmm. It's okay
I love your videos, but I think you're doing too many too fast... you're going to run out of good content.
I upload daily. Always been that way. I haven't really scratched the service yet to be honest
Good content is a very subjective thing tho,it's impossible to please everybody.

@JustJamie1983 which shader do you use on mame and neo geo games on pc and handheld ( if you have on ) I have a Anbernic cube XX
Hey, i don't use any shaders for these.
