They don't do it every shot though.

The look on Harrington's face pretty much sums up my golfing career 😂🤣

Here is a good rule of thumb for pros and amateurs alike: Always lay up to water if the carry distance over the water exceeds 135 yards, especially into any kind of head wind. This gives you room for error in case you hit a weak shot or an extra low shot. This rule does not apply off the tee on Par 3's, Par 4's, and Par 5's. This rule does not apply to hitting from out of a bunker or heavy rough or ball sitting way down in the grass, or hitting off of hard pan. In those cases you would want to reduce the carry distance over water to more like 100 yards maximum. Trying to attempt to hit a 175 yard or more carry golf shot over water to the green is not a risk worth taking. For one thing, your chances of landing on the green are poor even if you cross the water, so it is going to take you two strokes to get on the green anyway, so why not lay up? Heroic Eagles are overrated. Give yourself instead a decent chance for Birdie or a putt to save Par. Think about this: If you make your heroic shot over the water and land into a green side bunker, how likely is it that you will have a perfect lie in the bunker? More than likely you will have a poor lie and risk hitting the ball over the green into the water or leaving the ball in the bunker. Now you are looking at Double, Triple, or Quad Bogey. Also... why hit Driver into the water trying to drive a green on a Par 4 when you can hit a hybrid or mid iron into the fairway with a wedge into the green? Johnny Miller would say you have a YELLOW LIGHT situation. Proceed with caution. There will be plenty of GREEN LIGHT situations you will come across to go after the Birdies and Eagles. Be patient. [RED LIGHT would be a situation that might require you to punch out sideways back into the fairway instead of being heroic with a stinger under the trees. ]

I feel bad if I hit a $4 ball into the water, these guys are potentially losing tens of thousands of dollars for a dropped shot. I suppose when worked out as a fraction of income it probably comes out to about the same.
