Really enjoyed the video. Obviously we are now halfway through 2022 and looking forward to your reviews for this year. My favourite loco of all time is the recently released Accurascale sound fitted Deltic, the quality is doubtless comparable with the IRM A class. One of my biggest disappointments has been, after a long wait, the Hornby class 91. As seems to be normal with Hornby, the pantograph is poor quality. Another issue is that without a decoder the lights at the blunt end cannot be switched off, not ideal as the class 91s are almost always used in sets with mark 4 coaches and a DVT. This loco should really be in, at best, a Railroad + price range. It will be interesting to see your reviews of these models
Thanks John. My review of the Accurascale Deltic will be in the next few days and I've taken time to compare it with the Bachmann Deltic which it is effectively taking over from. It's a fabulous model for sure. For budget reasons I decided to pass on the Hornby Class 91 and went with the Bachmann Class 90 instead. I couldn't justify the price of the loco for what it is and then the added cost of a sound decoder, MK4 rake and DVT, all premium priced. Hornby's cheap pantograph's on models like the 91 and the 800/Azuma are unforgiveable really. The Class 90 has a nice operating pantograph and we'll see the same on the Accurascale 92s which I will be reviewing as well.
Great video as always. My favourites would be the Bachmann Virgin DCC MK2F coaches, Bachmann Class 20 DRS, Dapol Class 21. Personally I can’t wait to see the Accurascale, Cavalex and other challenger brand models enter the market next year
Hi... Subbed after watching this video and your other reviews, especially the Hattons class 66 - very well done. I also received one of the first batch of 66789 with 66783 on order - 66789 was my biggest disappointment 'out of the box' very similar to your experience, with the subsequent return/replacement/refund and cancellation of 66783. I have quite a collection of Bachmann class 66 locomotives which I am very happy with and agree that they work 'straight out the box'. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to dismantle my layout and am looking forward to being able to build a new one. After watching a couple of other videos on the hattons 66s and meeting Peter Dixon at a show, I have taken the plunge and acquired 66743 with sound in Belmond livery - hoping that this experience will be better than previous ! Happy New Year to you and keep up the excellent work......... Nigel
Love your clips. I'm finally getting my stuff that I was given over Christmas in the 70's onto a layout. Just bought a railroad 66 and 86 on ebay to go along with my old lima and Hornby BR stuff. I had all the old locos repaired and serviced in marks models in 1998. So 24 years later, with kids reared I'm finally getting a DC layout! Inspired watching your stuff. Thank you
Good collection of Irish OO gauge you've got there. It is a pity these models are so expensive and hard to obtain! I was not as disappointed with my Avanti Pendolino as you, but I didn't pay as much. The Beatles Eurostar is a good one to get. Grab one before it sells out! Thanks for uploading.
That for that. Yeah, you need crazy money to buy any of the older Murphy Models diesels and coaching stock now. Hope we'll see some new models on this front in the coming year.
Love this video. Unfortunately, buying a single IRM A Class loco ate my budget for the year but I'm delighted with it 🙂 I still have my late 70s Lima Class 55 deltic and my Santa Express and they run brilliantly, so I suppose, I can't complain 🙂
That class 800 (along with the Bachmann class 37) make me want to get back in to model trains, I haven't had any since I was a kid. It certainly looks like things have moved on nicely...
Yeah, they are much more refined, featured and detailed models than what we had 20-30 years ago. Much more expensive as well of course - I guess they are factoring that we've all got more money in our pockets now as well! The Hornby Class 800s and Bachmann Class 37s are lovely models for sure.
@@EuviRail I'm curious, I was just going to buy a hornby set, mostly for the nostalgia and to see if I would still enjoy the hobby. Is that the way to go now? Or would you recommend just buying a separate controller, loco and layout etc? I'm sure the latter might cost a bit more but I'm guessing you'll also get much better quality hardware going that route? I have been enjoying your videos lately. So thank you.
@@bowser515 Hi, if you're starting from scratch a train set is hard to beat value wise but it needs to have a locomotive you can live with. I'd steer clear of any sets with the smaller 4 wheel locos. Any of the sets with the larger steam locos with the likes of the Flying Scotsman or Mallard are worth looking at. If you are more interested in the modern era, this set uk.hornby.com/products/high-speed-train-set-r1230m is well worth looking at. I've seen these going for £120-£130 online which you'd never beat purchasing the parts separately. Starting again I would have started with a set and then added individual locos and rolling stock after that.
Worth a look if you are interested in steam: www.amazon.co.uk/Hornby-R1255M-Flying-Scotsman-Train/dp/B08485CDVW/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3NQWP8H76LZ76&keywords=hornby&m=A2OAJ7377F756P&qid=1642082581&s=warehouse-deals&sprefix=hornby%2Cwarehouse-deals%2C90&sr=8-2
@@EuviRail Thank you for taking the time to reply. Weirdly, the two sets you recommend are the two I've been eyeing up. I like steam and modern, I'd tend to land on the side of modern though if I had to choose. Although, out of the two sets I'm kind of edging on the FS. I'm a bit annoyed that Hornby only include one single carriage with their HST's now, they look a bit sad with the single. We'll see though, I appreciate your input. Thank you.
For me. I would say that the worst model I had was the Network Rail DVT that was like a lava lamp and sadly the intercity model also suffered the same flaws. I have received today two Hornby Class 60's in Cappagh and GBRF liveries that are to be covered in January 2022 and they look promising. I will be getting the Class 92 from ACS when they are out although I don't know if to pre-order or not. Might just pay the full power £180 as they are still good value even at that price.
Yeah, the Network Rail DVT would have suffered most of the same issues. Would be interested to hear how the Class 60s fare. Saw mixed reactions to the GBRF version when it came out last year. The Class 92 pre-order prices are due to go up in January. I have two on pre-order at this stage.
Totally get the hattons 66 issue. I basically super glued the axle boxes on all 6 I have and zero issues. 3 are sound fitted and they are far better for running than the Bachmann class 66. I find the Bachmann 66 far to light for layouts they are the only loco that seems to derail on my layout. No issues with anything else just the Bachmann class 66.
Hi Graham, how old are your Bachmann 66s? I had the de-railing problem myself with a Bachmann 66 on express points but the model would have been at least 5-6 years old now. All my newer ones (4 in total) have had no problems at all. There is great weight in the Hattons 66 for sure.
@@EuviRail the batch that first came in the older style boxes they tend to run all ok and then they just slip the front wheel off. No reason behind it. They are a completely different weight and when a say that it’s like 0.004 whatever of a difference but it makes a difference.
@@grah84mck Yeah, the DRS 66 I had was in the older style box. It just didn't like my Peco express points and would always derail on them. Was fine on regular Hornby points but both my mainlines have Peco. I didn't get to check the weight differences. Bachmann definitely did something to fix the problem.
@@EuviRail yeah my evenings star ⭐️ is fine. But that’s it. Do much prefer the hattons one tho. I know they have faults but I’m no train doctor but it is easy to fix. The Bachmann one does need retooling one side only has detail on the under frame
Hornby should do better you buy a £200+ model you should expect it to be good and worth the price especially with the new iep's at £400 that should have a disco feature and working doors at that price!

All Hornby keep doing is knocking out tat models at high prices.
Nicely done and look forward to lots of content in 2022!

Irish Railway Models Class A are a superb model. Its the standard to which all models should aim for.
While i didnt get an a class i got a lima deltic, wagons track and 6 sets of points.all 40 years old.
40 year old Lima kit can still run well which is more than can be said for most Hornby's locos of that vintage.
the class 390 looks great but i guess doest run well (i love pendolinos it should be better Hornby)
Yeah, it looks great in the running session but I had to swap the wheelsets with the older Pendolino to achieve this!

Very nicely done ✔ CHEERS FROM OVER SEAS UNITED STATES 🇺🇸
Thanks for that and Seasons Greetings to all our US modelers.
Hornby use to be great quality but has really dropped the ball
