It's been a busy start to the season. The phone has been blowing up with calls from anyone who even sees a bee. So far this year I've done three hive removals and caught five swarms. That may sound like a lot but I've probably taken fifty calls from people who either didn't have a bee problem that anyone could do anything about or they didn't want to pay anyone to take out that hive that's been in their house for seven years and is now eating through the drywall. Just today I spoke with a gentleman who has bees in a cupola thirty five feet in the air and he's looking for someone to remove them for free. He said they've been there for a lot of years and honey has been seen running down the walls several times. People are so much fun.
Scout bees have been a pain this year. I don't remember ever chasing so many infestations that turned out to be nothing more than scouts. I guess the up side is that I've had a little free time to play with my cameras. Maybe I should pursue landscape photography instead.
It really is looking like it's going to be a good year for the bees. We had a mild winter and all the colonies I have that made it through winter are really strong. The one in this video is what mine all look like right now. Feral colonies will be the same. In a couple of weeks I'll be having to schedule jobs. In the mean time I'll explore abandoned places and million dollar forever builds in search of those giant hives we all love to see.
The 2020 HONEY convention had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus or Covid 19. It will be held next in 2021 around this same time of the year.

That gap above the trim is how picture molding is put up. A hook let pictures hang on plaster walls without nails that could crack the old lath & plaster walls. Nowadays it’s often just a style for looks.

BINGO! we've got a winner. I love that detail, plaster or not. Still possible to buy hook/hangers but I prefer to make my own.
I’m allergic to bees so I do my best to stay clear of them. My dad however has a hive in his backyard he keeps as his retirement hobby. He loves watching your channel, and surprisingly as do I. Thank you for providing the great content my father loves to watch Sir.

The bees are all over the Holly bush at my front door. I've been staring at that bush for hours over the last couple days. They're really relaxing, despite beeing so busy all the time. keep those vids coming everything closed, everyone quarantined, -10 this morning no beekeeping today maybe in a month, that Inn should have been sold years ago to an owner who would have looked after it, probably take a million to fix it back up, the hive you split my bees would have swarmed long ago, never seen a hive so packed, then again I would not let that happen but the rooster is a busy man, very entertaining, happy days
Speaking of allergies, my sister used to take tea with honey in it. One day she became anaphylactic and went into shock, she was in the bath. She is fine, scared but fine. I don't know if that means she is allergic to bees or just the honey...

When you were walking around that dilapidated old inn, I kept worrying you were going to crash through something or the place was going to come down on top of you. That was a nasty old place. It look like it was probably only held together by cobwebs. The carpenter bees ate all the rest of it.

Never checked myself for varroa but did have a first this spring where I had a hive beetle jump off me in Walmart.
Did you happen to ask the trim guy why he left that gap between the crown and the ceiling? The only thing I can come up with is that they have rope lighting in all of their crown in every room, but that's just crazy.

It just hurts my heart to see a lovely old place like that Lofty Oaks Inn left to rot. It would cost a LOT to turn it back into what it was, but oh, what a pleasure it would be!

It maybe more work than what it's worth, but try using spacers between the cheap frames the bees love. I'm just a viewer, but I like to make things work better with what you got. Cut the spacers for comfortable bee space, and leave them in, or take them out if you like. Could be easier for frame extraction.
A million dollar property here is like a studio apartment.
Guess it's time for a mite check for the Ole DirtRooster. What kind of frames? They are energizer frames, they keep going and going and going. Nice strategic placement with the headlights on the old tractor.

I live in Newton , Iowa, and as of tomorrow , schools will be closed until the 13th of April, or longer
They close Weds in central CA.
I have family in iowa as well they live up around Keokuk Iowa on the Missouri line

I had a double removal on a multi-million home in Houston. Bee went in some soffit lighting junctions on the 3rd story of a mahogany paneled library. The other hive found the only spot in the garage soffit with no insulation.

I'm from the UK and never heard of dirt diver nests. What are they? 🤔 I'm very intrigued by these blobs of what resemble mud.
They are wasps that make their nests out of mud. They kill spiders and pull them into the nest, lay an egg or two on it and seal it up. When the eggs hatch they eat the spider.
THEY'RE CALLED *MUD (DIRT) DAUBER* WASPS, EMMA.
THERE WAS AN ENGLISH ENTOMOLOGIST (CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME) THAT WROTE EXTENSIVELY ABOUT WASPS AND WAS ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING.
NOT DRY, VERY INTERESTING.
DAUBERS ARE VERY NON-AGGRESSIVE.
I ACTUALLY PETTED ONE, ONE DAY, FOR APPROX., 4 MINUTES WHEN IT WAS BUSY ON IT'S NEST.
IT WOULD TURN AROUND AND LOOK AT ME ONCE IN AWHILE BUT, OTHER THAN THAT, DIDN'T PAY ANY MORE ATTENTION TO ME THAN THE MAN IN THE MOON.

Cant the conventions and classes convert to video? I used to teach a airsmith classes online to 50-100 people across the world. It wasnt perfect, some had to sign on at 2 am but everyone got the info and could ask questions as needed.

It's a wasp that builds it's nest out of mud. They're pretty harmless other than clogging up stuff with dirt. Dirt Dauber or mud dauber
