In order to be a successful manga artist you not only need to be a great drawer but you also need to be a good story teller as well. Mark is a phenomenal example of both in a way I can't explain.
I like videos like this because you don't have to necessarily use if for sleeping , you could use it to make your character look dead or if you draw it standing up and not on the side , it looks like she's floating. Good job as always.
You really just showed me how to draw three things: 1. How to flesh out the body after drawing the stick figure correctly. 2. How to draw a bed. 3. How to draw hand details while balled up and open. You wizard!!! You’re amazing and I’m glad I found your channel. You’ve been really helpful!
Your videos on using guidelines to draw complex poses are a HUGE help in getting proportions right, and making it look more natural. It's especially helpful if the reference you are using is not for the type of character that you actually want to draw (for instance, using a mattress ad to draw a sleeping child...if you were to just drew what you saw, it would look all wrong). Using guidelines allows you to adjust for your individual character's "characteristics." (Yes, pun intended.)
Excellent video. I'm just starting to draw, I'm currently learning how to keep things in proportion. I tried a few poses before but the minute I take the arm away from the characters side or move the leg in a different direction I risk making them wonky. I guess drawing the stick figure first could prevent allot of that which is something I might have to try. If a person is having a very emotional dream I'm sure a person can blush while sleeping.
Thank you so much for making a video about using guidelines. I'm a beginner and I'm not too prideful to say that I honestly need to use guidelines most of the time. I'm looking forward to more guideline videos.
Mark-Thanks for your videos..a great series. When I hear criticism, I consider the topic and not so much how its delivered. If someone takes the time to say something it must mean something to them and it could mean discovering a factor I had not thought of and could even improve future projects.
The cuts on the capri pants are usually just on the outside and not on the inside. But that's being nit-pickey and everything looks great since you're not drawing this for a fashion spread. And you make the feet and the hands look so simple. Has encouraged me to get the good drawing pencils out. Thanks again.
I HATE Criticism……it cuts at the heart……like I am an incompetent dumbbell. One never knows if criticism is disguised jealousy or not…….. what is their ulterior motive? You, Mark, have such a good attitude about it………no ego……..
You should draw an entire drawing like this but teaching all the aspects (like the facial features, clothes and fingers). Then when you'd upload them make them a series so whenever you come across with a place or feature that doesn't relate to the video's topic you'd have a link for a different video explaining the making of for example hands. Then we'd have an entire teaching experience of one particular drawing with all the aspects. I hope you understood and I am aware of the fact that you'd already done how to videos about hands and ears and so on but this was just an idea or a suggestion. Loving these videos Mark ! You're an absolute dream teacher ! I don't want to exaggerate but you really have lighten the spark within me to draw again. I haven't been drawing much for years but now I have gain maybe too much inspiration, haha. Thank you a lot !
Throughout all the time (I believe longer than a year?) Of watching your videos, reading your books, and seeing your fan base grow so much, I am always supprized to see you respond to your fans.
Good afternoon. Yesterday I drew along with this video but I made the character one of my male OCs. It came out very well and I feel is one of my best drawings. Your instructions were great and helped me do a pose/angle that would have otherwise been difficult and near impossible. Thank you so much for posting this. I'm gonna try to follow along with some of your other videos for my OCs. 😊
it's funny how a couple of years ago i was looking at your videos on how to draw, and now I'm coming back to them for inspiration xD! so i guess you can say that your videos inspired me to become the "artist" i am today cx thank you!
Nice video Mark, have been a fan and subscriber for quite a long time. The folds on clothing always trip me up when doing character illustrations though. Thanks for the helpful tutorials and entertaining commentary!
Hi Mark! I'm a new subscriber. I received some new sketchbooks for Christmas and dedicated one of them to just be for practicing drawing people. I've been drawing along with you lately and have really enjoyed your videos. The number one thing I've learned about you from this video is how "adorkable" you are. Lol :) Love your videos, you're very talented and you teach very well :)
They actually got your books on a norwegian/swedish online store now, so I bought your Mastering Manga books as soon as I noticed :) They've helped me so much when it comes to improving my style and how I draw now! :D Thank you so much for all the great tips, both in your videos and your books :)
Thank you for teaching us that pose! I made it for my mom and she said I am the most talented 12 year old there is. This video is great and your channel means a lot to me:)
I haven't had the chance to read any of your books but I did use to have ur how to draw book b4 it got taken from me ina move, I didn't know it was you who drew it untill I started watching our videos about a week ago I have found your videos very usefull in my manga thank you
markcrilley You're welcome, and thank you for replying! I have some of your how to draw manga books, and I've been watching your videos for awhile, you improve greatly every video. I'm so happy to get to see you get better and better, and to learn from you.
I have been watching your videos ever since they started and it has really helped with my drawing and the way I draw. These videos are really helpful thankyou x
This felt like a less focused topic perhaps? But I really liked it because we could follow you from the conception of the drawing and you talked us through the various stages (composition, proportions, hair, big toes first and slightly turned up, etc). Thanks as always Mark you’re awesome 👍🏼
Twinkle twinkle little star Why is art so fucking hard Up above the world so high I can't draw the other eye Twinkle twinkle litt- FUCK Damnit, what the-? I give up 😑
Hey Mark, fantastic video just like always, I also hope that in the future you can tell us in a video on how you figure out the guidelines and where to put them for them to be effective, I just give up on them in my own drawings and just end up guessing the placement of stuff.
Great vid love her she is awesome needing this for a sport injury image so I just made her into a ballerina loving you vids and who reads this give a great big thumbs up
I find your videos very entertaining. I catch myself laughing at various points thanks for putting up these videos and teaching us with such a light vibe :))))))
Hi, I subscribed to your Chanel around the being of this year and since than loved your videos. I start laughing I find you very funny. You inspired me to draw over the summer which I did and i'm really improving thanks to your videos.☺ THANK YOU KEEP MAKING VIDEOS
when i read brody's ghost book 1 that part when Talia says: My hands go straight through everything............ I NEVER REALISED THAT SHE PUT HER HAND THROUGH A BOX FULL OF MIKI FALLS BOOKS
The past few week's videos have been sort of 'different' then your past ones. It's nice that you are covering more ground and different styles :P I can't wait for the next 'cutesie' video! XD
(sorry for bad english) I am going to buy all Mastering Manga books. You are awesome arter and i must support you. Stay perfect! Thanx for everything :)
Mark, you are so good at drawing! I'm not good at drawing feet, shoes, hands, or hair, so i always try to hide them...but i can't hide hair. but anyway you're so awesome! Keep up the amazing work! ^u^
Awesome! I am procrastinating starting a challenge due to the sleeping pose I choose to illustrate. Now I have a starting point.....or a fishing pole:) Thanks for all you videos they have opened a whole new art form to me!
Have you ever thought about the idea of people sending in their artwork and you give critique and correcting/giving tips? Or maybe some challenges/contests for the viewers Where you also review some of the submissions?
This video was really helpful! I've got some poses down, but the sleeping pose has just never been easy.... The shirt is called a three-quarter sleeve. (If it had just reached the elbows, it would be a half sleeve.) :)
Hey Mark , I really like your videos and they really help me drawing stuff. I wanted to ask you if you could make a video about how to draw messy hair (like when you get out of bed)? That would be awesome.
1 month ago I was really bad at drawing and I was so impressed by people who could draw well. So, I decided to search on you tube for any tutorials to get better. And one day I discovered your tutorials ( that are actually the best over you tube). At first I was drawing realistic animals and at the end, mine looked pretty amazing although I was bad at drawing. Then, when I was done watching all your realistic vids, I looked at your manga vids and they're even better!! So one day when you answered me I was like so happy you can't even imagine. Anyway congratulations for your books!! :)
You're such an amazing drawer. I always watch your videos and I compare myself and when I do I just see how bad I am. I try and I try but I never succeed with anything I try to draw. You draw it with ease and I stay struggling. I will try to surpass you but I don't believe I will but then again at least I tried.
I have a book that you wrote on manga, and I’ve read it so many times. I didn’t realize it was you on the video, and now I finally know how you sound! 😂
I've heard sleeves like those called 'three quarter length sleeves'. I don't know if that's the proper term but it seems to work pretty well. Great video, thanks for making it. :)
random but my little sister sleeps with her hands half closed like you had drawn them. Thank you for posting the video by the way, it helped a lot with character designs :)
Hey Mark, I'm not sure if you've ever done a video on it before but could you perhaps do a how-to video on drawing cross-legged poses? I'm not that perfect at anatomy and no matter how hard I practice the drawings always come out a little wonky. If you're reading this, thanks for considering :)
In order to be a successful manga artist you not only need to be a great drawer but you also need to be a good story teller as well. Mark is a phenomenal example of both in a way I can't explain.
Implantedtag975 Wow thanks! :)
markcrilley no problem ^_^
Yeah he's pretty cool but I just think he should draw boys more often
Implantedtag975 I agree =^^=
From the FUTURE
Who else loves his sense of humor? Lol it's like we're all kids and he's the dad telling us a funny bedtime story. Idk 😆😆😇
+Quirky Ness He is like the paulsaursjr of drawing. if you've ever seen paul.
Nexsus Archon I haven't, but I'm guessing he's pretty hilarious XD
meh this guy is funnier
Lol yes, Tolkien developing The Hobbit whilst telling bedtime stories.
You’re right. I’m obsessed with this channel and always notice that
I like videos like this because you don't have to necessarily use if for sleeping , you could use it to make your character look dead or if you draw it standing up and not on the side , it looks like she's floating. Good job as always.
Scott Adams Thanks Scott!
You're welcome Mark!

Extremely good idea to show a full-body pose in such a unconventional way. It really teaches how to draw bodies in different poses. Thank you.

Your drawing videos are always a lot more entertaining than others so I don't get bored no matter how long they are.
Thank you so much for making a video about using guidelines. I'm a beginner and I'm not too prideful to say that I honestly need to use guidelines most of the time. I'm looking forward to more guideline videos.
I have been watching you all day and have done 11 drawings so far. You are an amazing drawer . You're really talented
This is a great drawing! The narration was also very clear, and I managed to copy the image decently. Thank you.
7:58 They're simply called three-quarter length sleeves :)
Mark-Thanks for your videos..a great series. When I hear criticism, I consider the topic and not so much how its delivered. If someone takes the time to say something it must mean something to them and it could mean discovering a factor I had not thought of and could even improve future projects.

I love your drawing, you make something that's hard look so simple.
Your videos rock, I learn so much each time I watch you. Thanks!

Savage 🤣🤣🤣😂
Throughout all the time (I believe longer than a year?) Of watching your videos, reading your books, and seeing your fan base grow so much, I am always supprized to see you respond to your fans.
Harry Flatt Well it's the least I can do; but thank you, Harry. :)
+markcrilley where you learn how to drawn? it was alone?
+Sir NightCore He had a great mentor. Hes mentioned him in many videos! But he's always been drawing. i know im not him, but hope it helped!
Never Ceases to amaze me. You just have a an eye for perfect proportions.
Thank you Mark. I'm a better artist after every video! Mastering Manga helps tremendously, as well.
Nolan Kelly Thanks for getting the book, Nolan!

Hey Mark! I have an idea for a video.
Maybe you could do a blindfold drawing challenge?
interesting idea :)
You're such an amazing drawer. I always watch your videos and I compare myself and when I do I just see how bad I am. I try and I try but I never succeed with anything I try to draw. I love this video! I have been struggling with shading and this helped a lot!
Thanks so much! I had to draw this for a school project that's due in 2 weeks 😁
Could you please do a tutorial on how to draw a person crawling from hind perspective? With guidelines of course.
That had 1 view when I cliched it,it took 0.5 secs to my phone to load, and it got 287 views. Magicrilley!
It's a three quarter sleeve :) You also gave her a "boat neck" neckline on her top. You'll be a fashion designer yet, Mark!
I have a book that you wrote on manga, and I’ve read it so many times. I didn’t realize it was you on the video, and now I finally know how you sound! 😂
Those are 3/4 sleeves -- EASY!
Love this drawing. :0)
Great video! Thanks mark,it was helpful
Even though i reckon i can learn most if not all of it from your videos i'll be buying your manga drawing books asap
Mark can you do a video on how to add a black background that turns white towards the character ? (also pointing what instruments are better to use )
Grat video. I try to do it but is there a video from you how to do shadings on these caracters.
Sensei greatings from Austria
I've heard sleeves like those called 'three quarter length sleeves'. I don't know if that's the proper term but it seems to work pretty well. Great video, thanks for making it. :)
I have a quick question about drawing clothes. How do you draw patterns or images? Like a plaid shirt or a graphic tee for example.
My school has all four miki falls books. I've started reading them and i thnk there really good. :)

Wow. I wish my school had Miki Falls books. We do have manga books, but no Miki Falls. :(

Thank you so much mark! this really helped! I'm so glad you make such awesome videos! never stop! :D
Hey Mark, could you make some videos about how to draw steampunk stuff? Like clothing or landscapes?
Hey Mark, I'm not sure if you've ever done a video on it before but could you perhaps do a how-to video on drawing cross-legged poses? I'm not that perfect at anatomy and no matter how hard I practice the drawings always come out a little wonky. If you're reading this, thanks for considering :)
I started to watch your videos at the age of 9 and now im 12 yrs and all the videos that you made is really good
Janasia Jones Thanks Janasia!
your channel is helping me so much omg
This was helpful thanks! Could you do more painting videos maybe on people and clothing? Please and thank you :)
Any tips for drawing feet, as in toes as well at different angles?
