    The bent neck lady was always Nell. Time isn't linear in Hill House, apparently you can be haunted by ghosts past, present and future, even your own ghost lol. What a horrifying concept!

    • @tylergannon7398
      @tylergannon7398 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      NoseKey it’s not a new concept either. Back in the day when people did witchcraft they would use necromancy to talk to ghost so that they could get the ghost to tell them things that would happen in the future and the past. Fun little detail - each of the other Crain children had a vision of Nelle in their episodes and each time she was wearing the clothes they last saw her in, further reinforcing the fact that the ghost of her haunting them represents how they failed her and drove her to her semi-isolation and decision to go to the house

    Luke doesn't see the "Bent Neck Lady" because she is not a ghost. Nell is sensitive like her mom and has 'premonitions' due to her sleep condition where she can access parts of her mind we don't normally have access too. Her husband did indeed die from an aneurysm. At least that is my interpretation. The bent neck lady didn't show up until AFTER her husband died and obviously once you know it's Nell, she would never harm him.

    • @ianwestc
      @ianwestc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +206

      Yeah, my interpretation was that Nell's ghost was drawn to particularly traumatic moments in her life, like a moth to the flame. Her breakdown at the end, her depression and embarrassment over Luke, the loss of her husband.

      @libby8090 6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      @@ianwestc Yes that is typical and inline with all of the siblings, in times of anxiety they are prone to things like this. Shirley - Anger
    Theo - Bargaining
    Luke - Depression
    Nell - Acceptance

    Nelle has been trying to warn herself throughout her entire life. She’s such an intuitive like her mother and Theo. Her visions just manifest differently than Theo’s ‘touch’ premonition. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to interpret those visions in time to stop them. That was my take on it.

    This is my favorite episode of the series! The fact that Nell had been haunting herself for her whole life, is just crazy! As someone who suffers from sleep paralysis, this is a very accurate depiction of what happens. I've only ever seen myself floating above too, but there are people that see demonic like things when they experience sleep paralysis

    • @itsdre9x9
      @itsdre9x9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have episodes of sleep paralysis once every blue moon. The difference in my case is that I can't open my eyes. Luckily since my eyes are stuck closed, I can't see horrifying things that I've heard other people describe. However, it's still scary to not be able to open my eyes or move. I start heavy breathing like Nelle. I'd say my scariest episode was when my face was partially buried into my pillow. It made it even harder to breathe and I panicked more.

We have to go now". Then felt a breeze and they were gone. Freaked me the fuck out, even though it wasn't exactly a typical sleep paralysis type vision. Ugh.

    • @JoDee172
      @JoDee172 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Aaron Lawson I agree with you, it's a very accurate depiction. Would be hard pressed to ever find a better one anywhere imo. I've suffered from sleep paralysis too, since I was little, and often - that's exactly what it's like. And yes, you're awake. I've also, like you, have never seen any demonic figures - except see myself floating around, til I was like 3 or 4 as you - but I do feel and hear them. Luckily, i always seem to be facing the other way. You try and call out for help, but moving your body is impossible, but when you do finally, it is THAT hard, and it takes forever. The one that reoccurs the most with me is when my blankets are being pulled on either side of me like it wants to strap me in (once I feel the blankets moving I know it's game over), then it holds me down and then starts to try to smother me unconscious. Its weight is right over my body, or lying down behind me while I'm on my side, as it's got its arm around me holding me firm so I cant move, eventually making its way to my throat and face with its hand, or holding my head down firmly into the pillow. Sometimes it - it's often male - goes straight to touching my face and throat. Then it tries to cover my head completely so I can't breathe. Its weight gets heavier, or it gets stronger, bolder and more aggressive. The more scared I am, the more encouragement they get, and the harder it is for me to move or scream. Like as soon as I start saying, (or moaning, cos I can't speak), "no no no no... " the faster it escalates, and the worse it becomes. I heard a maniacal laugh over my bed once when I was 13 and was sure I was going to be murdered. So I kept my eyes shut until I thought I heard him walk away and leave the house. And when I was little, I would hear men's voices suddenly moaning around my head and sometimes they'd get louder, really loud, all while I was awake. The only thing that works these days to get me completely out of it is by screaming myself fully awake. But like with Nell, it's REALLY REALLY hard. And it takes a while. But once I do, then I can sit up. Turn my light on. Get my heart rate down. Otherwise, I'm trapped and can't move a muscle. Doesn't seem to matter that I know what it is and I've had it all my life... it never gets any easier when I'm in it.

    That sleep pharalysis is a real thing. I had it a long long time, many times. And in this episode they show it quite right. It feels like that, you are a wake, cant move, see ghosts. And it is absolutely terrifying. But I learnd how to live with that.. But yeah, its real thing what Nell is experiensing.

    I've watched this show in it's entirety twice now, and a 3rd here with the both of you. This episode floored me. Episode 6 is a cinematic masterpiece...I hope you notice what they accomplish in the next episode with the camera work. It's amazing. The show runners said before this show even premiered that this is a one and done stand alone series. The Director, Mike Flanagan, also did Gerald's Game, a Steven King story, and Hush which stars Theo! Both are on Netflix, and definitely worth a watch, maybe a reaction to them once your done with this show. Flanagan is also writing and directing Dr. Sleep, a shining sequel adapted from Steven King's book of the same name! This dude is on fire!! such a good film maker.

    • @jimmyb2655

      Problem with a second season is that Mike Flanagan won't be involved...unless they wait until like 2022 or something, he's a busy man; and he wrote, produced, edited, and directed this entire 10 episode series...which nobody does except David Lynch (and if you haven't seen Twin Peaks: The Return, please see it, well worth the 18 hour adventure) If a season 2 happens it won't hold up to season 1 and will be a pure cash grab.

    • @AuzzieArtyst
      @AuzzieArtyst 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m pretty sure a second season has been greenlit, not sure if Flanagan is returning but I hope he does

    • @jimmyb2655
      @jimmyb2655 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't need it, Flanagan is way to busy to do it anytime soon. I'm sure if it is happening Netflix will rush it out, hire an entire team of people to replace Flanagan, and it won't be anywhere near as good. It will probably completely miss the point and be a generic haunted house story with a basic "burn the bones" plot line...I hope it doesn't turn out this way. but if a second season happens I will be very pessimistic about it being any good..hope I'm proven wrong but Flanagan set the bar extremely high on this one, and as far as I'm concerned this story is over and wrapped up with a nice little bow on it.

    The first time I watched this, I was stunned to realize that I was crying over a character I knew so little about and the show was only 5 episodes in. To me, that is so rare to find in any series. Even Game of Thrones didn't do that for me until the Red Wedding. This series just dominated my senses and there wasn't one moment where I didn't get chills. Beautiful handling of the original material.

    Also re: Nikki's question at the end, there is a book called the Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson but the show is only loosely based on the book. In the book the characters are four strangers who are sensitive to the paranormal who are brought to the house by a psychiatrist to see if the house is haunted. Most of the characters have the same names as in the show.

    So the reason you see Luke following the mom up the stairs is alluded to earlier in the episode. After their dad brings all the kids to the hotel, Luke says that he and Nell had a tea party in the Red Room with Abigail and their mom.
    Also, Nell is the bent neck lady and always have been. The confusion probably comes from the idea the show plays with, where hauntings and time aren't necessarily linear. Either ghosts exist outside of time themselves, or they do in the house because it's special. She died in that house, and so she haunted herself her entire life, and young Nell was haunted by her death.

      The final appearance in the corridor is what made it twig for me. It's the first time that you actually you actually see the bent neck lady drop and come to an abrupt stop which tells you she broke her neck from hanging. Prior to that point we only ever saw the bent neck lady from Nell's point of view stationary (after the drop). Knowing that Nell died from hanging I had my suspicions at that point.

    I’m guessing the her haunted mom is calling the most vulnerable of her kids home first. Nell has been haunted by the house and her own death her whole life but could have used the horrifying bent neck lady as a warning not to go to the house. So sad. Terrifying but sad too

    I'm not sure where they drew inspiration from the porch light thing but it reminds me of this episode I was watching that was sort of a documentary.. in the old days during slavery, a woman I think that was the maid or something of a slave trader would use the back porch light and flick it off and on twice to signal at some people waiting in a field and let them know when their "master" was asleep so that they could run and save and help escape some slaves.

    I know I'm like, a year late, but this is my favorite episode! I think the minute Nell entered Hill House, her path was set. The only time her path altered was when she was happy with Arthur, but his aneurysm put her firmly back on her path to Hill House. Nellie was sensitive too, in a different way from Theo, and in particularly traumatic times she glimpsed her fate. This episode changed the story from horror to tragedy for me. Love these reactions!

    I've experienced sleep paralysis and it is terrifying. It hasn't happened in a long time but when I was younger, I used to see a tall shadowy figure wearing a fedora-like hat standing in my doorway illuminated only by the night light in the bathroom or the moonlight. It was only recently that I discovered that the Hat Man has been reported by sleep paralysis sufferers all over the world for years. Luke's episode especially terrified me because of this.
