Great job Chris! So glad you where able to fulfill a childhood dream. Your story mirrors my own. grew up watching my camel trophy tapes almost everyday. Definitely pushed me into the lifestyle I live today. Here’s to hoping my chance to save a camel appears one day too.
Good for pointing out about bringing spares. Everyone should be familiar with common failures and weak areas in their vehicles, then carry those spares and know how to change/work on them.
Thank you Chris, for saving and maintaining this jewel, and for allowing us such a close, well informed look at it, and thank you Michael, for taking the time to do this, and share it with us! Great video, great truck! (planning on painting my '72 Jeep Wagoneer that color, if it ever gets far-enough along...🙄)
You have an amazing rig there Chris, really amazing. You're really lucky to own this. For anyone who has a love for the former event they will really appreciate how you've kept this vehicle. It has real character. While I was in France last year I was lucky enough to come across a Camel Disco and had a chat with its owner. It was probably the most memorable part of my holiday!!! Lovely intercom installation too :) Great to see ham radio onboard too. Your advice on fuses is 100% right. A Landy is a labour of love, there is no other way to describe it. Remember that a Landy never leaks engine oil, it's simply the inbuilt anti-corrosion system working!!!! It's been brilliant to hear the two of you chat about and show us this amazing rig. Thank you so much. OB#17170
Lol great video, I just did video on mine, how funny is that? I am a member of OB and we are making our way west coast, so I will contact when we are there. Land Rover is a lifestyle! Safe trails
soo damn cool. Grew up seeing the pictures of these as a kid. I'm building an overlanding FJ Cruiser at the moment but know that one day I will own a defender.
Land Rovers (series through Defenders) are a love/hate relationship. You love 'em when your driving them and hate 'em when you're fixing them (which is rather often!) I'm currently building (re-building, really) a 1987 Defender in the UK for a year-long expedition across southern and eastern Africa. Would a Land Cruiser be better? Probably; rides better, more reliable, and utterly soulless. Defenders come with a brotherhood (and sisterhood!) where if you are stopped on the side of the road or trail, any other LR driver will stop and help. Not unlike Jeeps here in the States. Thanks for the tour, Doc!
Where you guys in britan at the Peterborough land rover show I remember seeing a 110 camel defender with the same wheels same rear setup and just same look overall
Now I'm confused since I heard that the trophy trucks weren't just off the shelf but instead heavy duty specced out? I don't mean accessories like lamps and racks but frame and diff protection plates or just more durable components, no? Ah, Rollcage!
Great video! I liked the added history he added as well as being honest about the vehicles downsides. All vehicles have them old and new but videos like this really show people what owning one could potentially be like. Specially being new to owning older vehicles. Great work
first off, love this landy she's a true legend. secondly 400 ish freekin miles WHAT my 2004 D90 only just managed 300miles and I religiously zero the trip on each fill up so I know at 299 miles I have 1 mile left or LESS :O
How do you get a 200Tdi swapped TD 110 registered in California? I thought it was almost impossible in most of the US, hence all the factory v8 defenders disappearing from over here?
Way to avoid that weight question. :D Go to a cat scale and get a weight! Would love to know. Love the Awning I really want one... however my LR4 is heavy, and loaded up it's very close to GVWR. 6500, but i've got 380 hp. 380 torque. That awning looks heavy.
Mike Wesner yeah I need to get her weighed. Wasn’t avoiding, literally don’t know. Awning is about 55 pounds. I’ve got an LR4 too and love the power and comfort for long highway runs but this is way more fun!
@@otmd-overlandingtrophymd5557 Amazing truck , great story! Are you ever up in the Central Valley. I would love to get a look at this in person. I’m west of Yosemite. We have a Jeep JKU and intend to keep it forever, however I love these older Land Rovers, especially those with history.
Love the rig👍. I tried to put on a "camel trophy style" trail run but people here are such sissys . Afraid of mud, ect. Turned total greenies. I did get a few for a snow run which was fun but too hard core for most.
@@SimonElenor we know they can, but if it is over then it voids its rego, insurance etc. Don't me wrong, I love it, but there is a huge issue at the moment with people adding gear and more gear to platforms that aren't designed to carry it. Seriously affects performance, safety (stability, braking) and the longevity of the vehicle.
@@nnoddy8161 this is America mate. They overload vehicles here by getting in them. Plus they don't weight you for gvm here. All kidding aside. I don't think it is that badly over. I follow quite a few guys in Australia and they have it even more loaded than this one.
@@nnoddy8161 Having said all that though. I do not agree with the fact that there is no MOT here and no GVM checks. The only thing they have in a few states is emission checks. If they had MOT checks here there would be 50% less vehicles on the road.
@@SimonElenor I am on Oz, we don't have GVM checks for rego either, but if you in an accident and they suspect you are over GVM, bingo! Insurance voided. As mentioned earlier, overloaded vehicles aren't good for a range of reasons.

Yeah, they look tough but can't match the Toyota reliability.. my fzj80 has 311,000 miles and can still do 70-75 mph up mountain passes in Washington state. ( Loaded up with 6 people, a Thule cargo box with gear, food and a 70 qrt pelican cooler full of beer and drinks.)

a truly beautiful machine

" Don't leak oil"

Just as mine..

Shame that not one of the current lineup could attempt this challenge
A Cummins R28 would be a good upgrade. What is the tire/wheel size 255/85r16 on 16x7's ?

They are more expensive every day.

This rig is legit! Wished Land Rover brought the camel trophy back
It is now called Land Rover Experience. Smoking is not excepted anymore.

That has to be over its GVM.
