  • My friend Max and I both have bought cheap old Volvos that need a service, so here we go. There is a lot of wind noise in the video, sorry about that.

Are you saying you have the same pump? I've never had problems using it to pump cold oil. If the oil is high viscosity or it's a very cold day it could struggle I suppose.

    🍁Hello ~ you two,
I subscribed to your great videos because I was just given a 1995 940 S Turbo Sedan and I am a “newbie” with car maintenance.
? I have a question concerning reading the oil dipstick: there’s no notches or writing to let me know how much oil it needs ?
I want to avoid killing my car without adequate oil !
Thank you so much for the great video !
🍁 Happy Autumn from Downers Grove, Illinois !

There's got to be some marks on it surely? I've never seen a dipstick without them. They can sometimes be very hard to see. Take the dipstick out and clean the end of it thoroughly, and then see if you can see any marks. If they're very faint you can try and scratch a new "full" marker into the metal with a sharp point.

you missed one bit of the service which is absolutely crucial. And that is the clean of the flame trap. When it is clogged the pressure within the engine will raise and it will start leaking oil.

We had only owned these cars for about a week when we filmed this, and I have since learned from experienced Volvoists about the flame trap. As it happens, the 940 in this video has now been scrapped, and we've saved the turbo engine and gearbox to transplant into my 240.

I own a 1994 940 GL wagon and a 1992 240 GLE sedan, previously I owned a 1984 240 GL sedan followed by a 1985 240 GLE sedan which I regretted selling so much that I purchased the 940 and 240 I now own. Those two "cheap" Volvos of yours look in remarkably good condition for their years. They should give you years of pleasant motoring. They are easy to maintain and repair. The biggest drawback is that they don't have the enhanced fuel consumption of modern cars. But this is a trade of for the ease of maintenance. Cherish them and they will love you back. (just kidding). In the final minute you describe that one of them had a clutch fail. This is a bonus as manual trans in Volvos are rare and valued. I also notice the 940 is a turbo and a wagon. My 940 wagon is NA. I am a little jealous. lol. Enjoy the cars and make more videos. Cheers

Greetings, I would like to check it out. One problem I can see is that you guys are in England I think (from your accents and the licence plates on the cars) and I live in Australia. Yeah Down Under. So thanks for the offer but I really hope you keep the car so I can enjoy more videos. Cheers
