A fantastic flaw that makes these new videos even better: Knobs’ vocal delivery and in-person presentation isn’t the most charismatic or polished, but I absolutely adore this new style, partially (mostly) due to how honest these musings are conveyed.
In all honesty, I felt he was both charismatic and polished, more than most youtubers in my opinion. Love that it's not 'in your face' usual kind of youtube delivery.

Knobs- seriously, you’re a genius. One of the realizations I’ve come to in the past couple of years is that flaws in performance are ok, to be expected and even embraced- not to mention most people don’t even notice your mistakes , only you the performer. I’m setting as a goal this year to apply that philosophy to recording as well- that (some) mistakes in a recording are ok. Not that quantity is more important that quality, but that perfection is the enemy of productivity, if that makes sense.
I bought a Mr Black Supermoon MS Edition that have a really crazy warped modulation that appears at random times, and I was underwhelmed at first (I justed wanted a normal reverb). Eventually I started enjoying it a lot, and that crazy random modulation became a part of my sound, and I fell in love with it. It made me rethink what I expected from a pedal, and what was initially a " flaw" and then became an awesome sound kinda goes along with the message from this video. You once said in your Instagram about giving time to see if a pedal works for you: "Give it time. How much time is enough? I would suggest this: play it until *something* moves you. It may not be what you bought it for, or something you need, but find it. Find the point of that pedal. Then you'll really know if it's for you."....that was also an inspiration while discovering this pedal. Thanks for doing what you do.
I'll have to agree about Mr. Black pedals. I recently landed an Ambience Echoverb with two delays and the reverb all modulated separately. What I find fascinating is when the Gods of Calamity occasionally dip all three slow modulation waves at the same time sounding like a momentary warp in vinyl. They achieve unity, but at the same time it's a corruption. Kinda has me enjoying pitch modulation for the first time.
Funny thing about the thing you said about what's "lost" in delay...there's a piece by Alvin Lucier called "I Am Sitting In A Room" that does this acoustically! He recorded himself speaking a passage, then recorded the playback of that passage from a set of speakers in a room, rinse and repeat until all that is heard are the resonant frequencies of the physical room itself! (Also, apologies if you already know of this piece, but in my defense going to Music School has made me realize that less people know about weird postmodernist compositions than I've realized :P)
Don't forget the sound of humbuckers!! The peaks and valleys in frequency response created by the self-inductance of two coils in series is far from true representation of the electromagnetic field generated by the strings oscillating above them. And it's a sound used and loved by thousands if not millions!
I love corrupting my EHX looper by overdubbing and repeatedly pressing the half speed and reverse button as fast as possible. You get some really haunting and disgusting sounds that way.

To your point, and about my favorite effect/lineage: the rotating speaker (Key: begat = ->) Choirs -> Pump Organ -> Pipe Organ -> Electronic Organ + Leslie Cabinet -> Phasers/Univibes -> Rotating Speaker Emulators I love every imperfect step of the devolution/evolution, and the myriad applications of each.
I had this vox solid state amp back in the day with built in fx, one of them being a digital delay. if you set the repeats to max it would loop continuously without self oscillating. the best part was when you hit the tap tempo button it would add the difference as silence (when making the delay longer) or do this glitchy chop (when shortening the delay time). It mad a max delay time of maybe 4 seconds but I was able to do some really cool rhythmic stuff with it. Was really into Brian Eno at the time and was reading about him composing the windows start up sound. him trying to compose pieces of a music only a couple seconds long.

Great video. The Ciate-Lonbarde instruments strike me as a perfect example of cryptic. Funny thing about Make Noise is that, while their panels might appear cryptic at first, they make perfect sense once you get used to them. Their videos and manuals are among the best in the Euro world, too.
Flaws and errors are part of our daily playing and searching, they are just there. Better get them and make a good thing of them. LoFi Dreams is on my board thanks to you and Datachoirs, it is an incredible machine, sometimes unpredictable but never disappointing. A box of surprises. i was a teen in th 80s and have been about electronic sound for over thirty years. for a decade or so, the "gear" was "all character". i gradually got better gear and switched focus to vst development, becoming an award winning audio dsp guy (xoxos vst). i can code perfect audio in time, spectral or cepstral domains. except all of my development is on xp and my xp computers all stopped working. this fundamental flaw has reduced all of my music to silence and replaced it with birds, wind and traffic. its amazing what flaws can do for your tunes.

Your video unlocked some creative path/audio flow chain process I was missing/looking for. Right after the video I went to practice to apply some of the ideas you shared with us. So I've grabbed my guitar and 1/ For limitation I took my old Headrsuh E1 for "only" 12 second looping. 2/ For delay, reverb and decay used my El Capistan with wow, flutter and crinkles at max. 3/ Wardenclyffe Tower for LFO/filtering. 4/ At the end of the effect chain a little bit of overdrive/feedback with the Landscape Stereofield. Got the result I was looking for : ) so many many thanks ! You've really led me to the path. All these degradation things, audio haikus, collage/DIY reminds me japanese aesthetic concepts, mainly the one named "Wabi-Sabi", but also others such as "Iki" and "Shibumi" that you probably know. Back in the 1960’s (.yes, I am old) I had a Watkins Copykat, an early British tape echo. It was worn when I got it and the mechanism was very sloppy. Even with new tape loops, it would randomly crinkle up the tape, or completely flip it inside out. The sounds it made, combined with the egregious wow and flutter were indescribable, and now I want another one.
I'm listening this through my monitors and at good level. At 9:24 the fast high-pitched twirling sound you got from the Stereo Fiel made my throat vibrate like the heart of a tachycardiac hummingbird

My favourite flaw of the DOD is when it starts self-oscillating and the only way to make it stop is to unplug it and plug it back in. My friend performed a surprisingly nice noise set in my living room while inspecting my pedal board. after the DOD started self oscillating he put the guitar down and started playing the pedal board as a synthesizer of sorts
I just recently bought a new chorus pedal from a builder I have not seen before. It has a knob that I have no idea what it does and it might be broken. It's all metal no paint job and it sounds absolutely awsome!!!
Oooh, the thing you're saying about flaws in pitch tracking...there's a plugin called Bitspeek which pushes any audio through it through the same form of analysis-based speech synthesizer in the Speak And Spell. Quite often it doesn't track the pitch perfectly, and you can hear this in a LOT of Neil Cecierega's pieces that use the plug-in such as "One Weird Trick" and "Melt Everyone". Plogue Chipcrusher has a similar mode, and once I got a really interesting vocal bassline simply by feeding a polyphonic pad through it!
This is a really wonderful video and articulates something I've always struggled to put into words about why distorted, fucked-up and "ruined" sounds are more compelling to me than anything else. It reminds me of the concept of kintsugi, highlighting the wounds in a damaged object as things that make that object even more special and worthwhile. It's an important concept that I think applies to most things in life - without imperfection and the variations caused by it, would anything be truly special? Thanks for this :)

Was just using an old cassette player to send a feedback loop through from the send fx on my mixer and got some gnarly saturation and feedback oscillations. Sounds great!

I just recently bought a new chorus pedal from a builder I have not seen before. It has a knob that I have no idea what it does and it might be broken. It's all metal no paint job and it sounds absolutely awsome!!!

Oooh, the thing you're saying about flaws in pitch tracking...there's a plugin called Bitspeek which pushes any audio through it through the same form of analysis-based speech synthesizer in the Speak And Spell. Quite often it doesn't track the pitch perfectly, and you can hear this in a LOT of Neil Cecierega's pieces that use the plug-in such as "One Weird Trick" and "Melt Everyone". Plogue Chipcrusher has a similar mode, and once I got a really interesting vocal bassline simply by feeding a polyphonic pad through it!

This is a really wonderful video and articulates something I've always struggled to put into words about why distorted, fucked-up and "ruined" sounds are more compelling to me than anything else. It reminds me of the concept of kintsugi, highlighting the wounds in a damaged object as things that make that object even more special and worthwhile. It's an important concept that I think applies to most things in life - without imperfection and the variations caused by it, would anything be truly special?

Was just using an old cassette player to send a feedback loop through from the send fx on my mixer and got some gnarly saturation and feedback oscillations. Sounds great!
