Jono always seems to fly under the radar, probably because he prefers it that way. But you can tell from the videos how much everyone else on the crew respects him, and rightfully so because he’s an awesome carpenter!

We have subterranean termites here in Florida. Before watching this video I was watching a video about an ICF house build in Orlando. After weeks of setting up, tearing down, and packing up heavy forms, I think the Perkins Bros are now seeing the light of ICF.
I hope the Perkins crew does something with ICFs in the future. I like the concept and have seen a number of videos but these guys show so much of the process very well and that really helps!
@@MrBswede The Perkins Brothers, Erik in particular, has a video dedicated to why they don't use ICF. Erik bought a house with an ICF basement and had trouble finding a pest control company who would warranty a ICF house. Subterranean termites can build tunnels in the foam to reach the wood framing above. If proper barriers are not put into place, it is hard to detect their presence. If done properly, the barriers force termites to the exterior where they can be detected and dealt with. I hope to build an ICF house in their general region in a few years. I might inquire about them doing my house when the time comes. I think it could be good content for them, good advertisement for an ICF company and termite mitigation products and techniques.
I stacked my own ICF wall, 13' tall and 246' of wall length in 3 days with my wife and dad and another 2 days to pour it and remove the plumbwalls.. It's super easy.
@@markstipulkoski1389 now that you mention it I remember the detail of insurance due to termites. Must be solutions to that. We don’t have termites where I live so I probably wouldn’t have that issue but good info.
@@FJB2020 I wondered about bracing the walls for the pour. Looks like you would need a lot of bracing (which I guess you do for any tall wall).

In the TH-cam timescale, it can seem like this this took forever, but this was professionals making sure the most important part of a structure was done right so it lasts for 100 years. Well done. can't wait to see the rest of project.
I was in Greensboro NC for a martial arts tournament this weekend and stopped by the BCO in Bryson City for some Perkins gear on my drive home to Omaha. I absolutely love it and can’t wait to show it off. Your videos are the highlight of my week, I love the whole crew!
Back in the 60s my Father, an architect, used shuttering with heavy texture deliberately. He even used ferns and branches and horse chestnut leaves to make patterns in his set concrete lintels etc.

I just built my new house near Chattanooga on the side of a hill using Superior Wall foundation system. It is amazing! Precast, pre-insulated with metal studs casted in place. Couldn't be happier

almost 30 yrs since "Just tap it in" was introduced and to this day it's used on job sites around the country. love it
The crew is a great group of hard working guys.
35 years ago we had the basement walls of our new house poured. The forms had a brick pattern on one side that was usually placed on the outside face. We had them place those panels on the inside giving our basement walls the look of finished brick on the inside.
Concrete companies local to me have form trucks with a crane and essentially baskets that the forms sit in and they can just drop the forms literally anywhere you could want it. Saves hours or days of moving and loading forms

I build ICF in Florida and it’s the only way to go. Super light weight and once you get a groove going it’s pretty quick. Also can’t beat the R value of the form. Just watch out a bunch of people think they know how to build it because it’s adult legos, but I’ve had to come behind several companies and redo what they did.
Enjoy watching over your shoulder; Seeing the process you do and getting results. Also appreciated using the zip to make a sturdy binder for the plans. Finally, love seeing the plans laid out while you think out loud and explain your vision. Great series guys. Take care.

I’m watching from Vancouver BC, Canada. I love when they contract work out and that company comes to the job site. I love hearing the thicker southern accent. The Perkins crew doesn’t really have an accent, but every company that they contract out, like the truss guys, they have thick southern accent.
I stumbled upon the Perkins bros at the end of the Nantahala retreat, so I’ve been following the last buncha homes, but this one is the most interesting by far!!! Love the work and the videos!!

That was one hell of a job, start to finish!
Jaime; I had arthritis in my wrist and thumb. Every day it felt like my thumb's tendon was 1/2 inch too short, and my wrist was hurting bad. It felt like my hand would fall of my arm in the mornings, and I woke up every time I had to turn around in bed. I went to a specialist who prescribed several vitamins and medicines along with exercises. It really helped! It takes 1 month for the production of the vitamin to be produced in your neck and be transported into your wrist. After that I got well, after suffering for 6-8 months with visiting doctors without results. I got a tennis-elbow and a bad wrist in my other arm after fixing car for hours and hours and moving really big windows without good aid. I followed the same procedure and got well there too.
So no more forms, what ever will yall do!! Cant wait to see some framing now!!!
While I was up in Whittier this weekend, I was able to swing by BCO and grabbed a shirt and some stickers! It is awesome that yall have a physical location to get your merch! I believe Brett was there and was super apperciative! The shirt material is really soft and will be added in to my rotation! I was the one with the Bluey shirt with my girls names on it and Blue Hat with Boomer(kannapolis cannon ballers) on. They have everything in that store you need if you forgot any gear for camping!
ICF. Light weight Lego forms. Rebar chairs for horizontal rebar. Vertical rebar can be placed after the fact. No ties required for residential if adequate overlap. Pour. No stripping. Interior insulation done. Drywall nailers in ICF webs. Zont system exterior bracing. Check out Fast Foot footings too. Major time savings. It’s awesome.
I have a lot of respect for truck drivers, they literally keep this country moving.

In Australia we have a product called dincel it’s a hollow plastic form system that is core filled with concrete and you simply slide the steel in through holes in the end and through the top it’s a great product that can be painted and rendered

I agree with Jamie, way too much work with these forms and ICF or something similar was in my head as well.
I did an ICF foundation on my house. The worst part was setting and pulling steel stakes for the footer. The actual ICF was amazing to work with and I did it all by myself. I used Stronghold ICF if anyone is wondering.
One thing I really liked is that I was able to use composite shims and my laser level to dial in the top of the wall.
You can also mono-pour the wall and footer which has a few major benefits.
Right!!! No joke! I remember watching a show that had styrofoam forms like 20 years ago! That’s also when I discovered radiant floor heating!! I wish I could remember the show. ICF are the way to go, all the work those forms take is just baffling. I just love that with the ICF system they are relatively simple to put together, they are insulated on both sides and then finally they have plastic studs that eliminate any time spent to frame out those concrete walls
I just stripped a basement full of ICF forms earlier this week and the whole thing took me about 4 hrs as 1 person. They barely weigh anything because its only small metal posts that need removing after install. Only problem is you have to cut up a bunch of foam to make them which I don't really enjoy doing.
What is the consensus on doing the form work yourself vs hiring it out? Would you choose this path if you had to decide all over again? Will you do your own form work on future projects? Cost breakdown compared to subcontracting? I love the content boys! I'm from NC, grew up in Wilkes, so everyone of your videos feels like home.

I have been on a lot of construction sites and this method of form work is by far the most labour intensive processes I have witnessed to date. Most contractors use polystyrene, because of the ease of lifting and positioning. Labour costs I assume would be high using this method.
Definitely a lot of labor, some people are going to want it poured. It would be interesting to know what your cost analysis was on that

10:01 jamie needs a "stick" it's a type of clamp that holds a set of drawings. We actually have ones that hang on a wall and you can flip through them like a book. I work for Mid-south Engineering, we are actually doing some engineering work with LP for their plant.
Gotta love the zip tape though...
Newspaper racking rod for display used in libraries. About $20 on line. You can then roll the drawing back up tightly at the end of use and they will not get crushed.

I always wondered why poured foundations are so expensive. This is why - several weeks of getting the forms ready and set, several weeks de-installing the forms. That is four weeks of work not to mention the concrete and steel.
Im not a big fan of ICF blocks. May as well do a block wall and glue foam sheets to either side. Have you looked into aerated concrete blocks, they're also called Heble in Australia. We mostly use the panel style for fire protection but in europe they use the blocks to build all external walls. Easy to build, very strong with high thermal efficiency with the largest blocks, 600x200x300mm. Aerated concrete is really slept on in western countries

Not bad for your first use of steel forms. I do not think ICF can be used for an 11' high wall in a single pour. Constructing wood forms for a pour this high needs expirenced form carpenters only or risks of blowout will be significant. Nice job, you spent time planning and did not rush installation to achieve structually sound foundation/shell, only needed more vibration to achieve pretty. I would feel lucky to have your crew on any of my residential jobsites your company would always be welcome. Ray
That form of wall foundation is a ton of work. Never thought it's that labor intensive.

Have you completed a cost analysis on you completing the work vs having a sub do the concrete and form work?
What about pre cast concrete walls??? Form each panel on site then stand up with a small crane.... make life much easier.... love the show

There's the basement wall insulation with polycarbonate studs called In-So-Fast that Matt Risinger highlighted on one of his videos. Might be something you might want to look into.
Just a little tip for next time. On the corners, instead of tapping with a hammer. Use a car jack, if they are called Jack's in America. To lift the car up to change a tyre.
If was going build house like i would build with Hempcrete as can still use wood as the form but the inner structure is still normal 2x6 and you put the electrical before you put the Hempcrete as its r50 insulation last upto millennium. and only has 2 ingregidents hempfiber and lime
i use that same nut driver all day everyday. one of the best tools i have ever purchased. i get mine from the refrig supply store
